Smith was asked to get off a Southwest Airlines flight for not fitting in his seat yesterday. Was the airline right?

this is ridiculous. If the **average** size and weight of the population in question (the USA) exceeds the parameters of the seating in the vehicle (whether in terms of height or width) - surely that is the responsibility of the airline to rectify by refitting or upgrading. I mean its bad enough that they want to pack people (at least poor people) in there like sardines so that they can increase profits. How dare they publicly call someone out of the plane under these circumstances. IF they are going to do something like that it needs to be done politely at the check in desk. This is poor practice at best - raving idiocy at worst. Its not like he is obese. He is nowhere near the kind of weight that would represent an irritation to others around him. I hope he writes a frigging awesome screenplay that just tears strips off this airline.
hm.. if HE is considered unacceptably fat i wonder how the hell Michael Moore travels.

If he bought the two tickets the article claims he did I fail to see what the problem was in him staying on the flight.

"Should I be charged for 2 seats because my knees may disturb the person in front of me?"

They charge for two seats because the person in question takes up two seats. It has nothing to do with general discomfort.

OK, look at it this way....

I`m 6`5" and have a tough time sitting in a seat as well because my knees push against the seat in front of me.

Should I be charged for 2 seats because my knees may disturb the person in front of me?

"technically yeah, they were in the right, because he couldnt get in a seatbelt so if he was injured during turbulence, he probably could have sued, its ridiculous, but thats how it works :/"

Just to let you know, Kevin was actually already seated AND belted in when the stewardess informed him that he needed to be taken off the plane. The armrest didn`t lower `comfortably` but DID lower. I doubt anyone asked whoever was sitting next to him if they minded or not. (it wasn`t a very long flight it seems?)

I understand safety hazards but it was uncalled for to have him removed only after he had already been seated. You might as well just tell him that for safety regulations, if he wanted two seats he should wait for his already scheduled flight seeing as this one only had one seat available.

As a fatty, I hate sitting next to fatties. But I promise that we don`t all have hygiene issues and you won`t contract some horrible fat virus by touching us. Sorry we take up too much space on in teensy airplane seats.
That being said, I agree with with whoever earlier said `I would let Kevin Smith have my seat and I would sit in his lap.` He is crazy funny, there are definately worse people to be squeezed next to.
He is pretty big though, I`ve seen bigger on airlines before. And all airlines carry seatbelt extenders.

Anyone have a disclosure on his actual weight?
Imo he`s obese but if I had to sit next to a chunky person on a planeride... he would be one of the better ones to sit next to. I imagine he probably takes care of himself hygene wise. Its the chubbies that smell like sweat and goat cheese you gotta watch out for. :X

He had his flight changed and he suddenly lost priority. So when he boarded his flight, and they decided he needed two seats, and there weren`t two seats... well... They had to.

And yes, airlines should charge overweight people two seats - if only for the Weight and Balance issue.

Do you have any idea how many airline/commercial planes take off overweight / off balance? Those responsible let it go, seeing as by the time they take off / level off, enough fuel is burnt that everything are within the charts.

@itsallfake

The frak? Really? Stewerdesses CAN NOT make judgment calls on who stays or goes form the airplane - that decision lies with the pilot and pilot ONLY.

It`s in every rulebook. If the stewardess made that call, something went very very wrong.

Personally I think the "health and safety" of the passengers sitting near him wasn`t anything to do with him being fat, it was just that he was Kevin Smith.

The airline acted to preserve the sanity of its passengers. Nuff sed.

I`m guessing by Chimmey`s personal attack that this is what he does. Using the internet to feed a personality that he is forced to hide in public. Thus the way of the internet. No big deal. it`s easy to attack people you don`t know from behind the keyboard safely tucked away in your basement.

Chimmey I like how you suddenly made it an issue of overweight people wanting special privileges. That is great faulty logic and it is for that reason you are not allowed to sit in an emergency isle. I`m sorry, that joke probably went over your head, I`m saying you`re an idiot.

While I don`t think it`s unreasonable to ask those who can`t fit into the torture devices they call a seat these days to pay for two tickets, I think a number of those people mouthing off would be surprised if the airlines held fast to such a rule as they`d be charged as well. The airlines have crammed more seats into planes over the years and, as a result, I`ve had many of you "Normal" people rubbing against me. It`s a plane, a form of conveyance, not a social issue. Trust me ChimmeyChang, I`m sure if we were all allowed to fly our own planes the "fat" people would choose to not ride with you either. Learn a little tolerance, we have because we know there is no surgery to remove th

links for itsallfake and winter ice... and shame on you for being so freaking lazy... i bet you are both fat.

i have very little sympathy for overweight people who want special privileges...for the majority of overweight people its a choice, why should you be rewarded for poor decision making when everyone else, especially myself are made to pay for our mistakes?and for everyone who is thinking about lap band surgery... you do realize that for the most part the reason it works is that you are forced to eat less... there is no magic potion, it doesn`t change your metabolism... it makes it so that you cant eat as much... that`s all.so put the freakin twinkie down get some exercise and dont get an unnecessary surgery.

of course te airline would be right and its a f**king disgrace that i have to pay the same luggage allowance as a guy who weighs 3 times the size of me, we should all be weighed at check-in and price each person individualy acoordig to how much slimy flesh they have tucked away

The guys not even that freaking fat, he`s overweight but that probably puts him around on par with the average north american.

I read this yesterday, and though I love the man dearly, I had to laugh. He`s always had weight problems and when I saw him in September you could tell he was looking a little heftier than before, so it wouldn`t surprise me if he`s more comfortable with 2 seats instead of one.

Celebutard or not, a person is a person and everyone has the same rights. When celebrities get special treatment just because they are who they are it`s completely unfair to the people who get stepped on in order to give them such special privileges.

Hey winter: 1 - Stop being an internet lawyer, this isnt a trial and anecdotal evidence is perfectly ok for posting on a site for people who are bored.
2 - I saw it on oprah, therefore, link aren`t going to be provided. You want links get off your lazy ass and lookem up yourself. Me, im providing story from memory. this isnt science weekly, we are not a community of encyclopedias. The fact that someone else on here remembers that episode is cool with me, at least im not the only one watching oprah while in the waiting room of a hospital (was a couple of years ago, but definately after 9/11)

Thats bull**** dude. I understand HUGE people shouldn`t be allowed on planes. Fat people shouldnt get any special privileges either. Kevin Smith isnt THAT large. His Twitter even said he was able to fit comfortably. The airline I do believe needs to realize that just cause someone is a little overweight doesn`t make them a risk. Especially if he could still get up and move easily. >.<

On a side note, Kevin Smith has a new movie =D Cop Out!!!

I saw that one that was on Oprah and it made me so mad .The girl was beautiful and obviously the flight attendant was jealous or something. As for fat people on planes I don"t want one sitting next to me because fat people disgust me but if it was Kevin Smith he could have my seat and his seat and I would sit on his lap .

"Y`know, they should make an airline with over-sized seats for the plus sized crowd. Thin people would not be allowed to fly that airline."

I believe that it was American Airlines who tried using larger seats, by removing the narrower ones. Oddly enough, people still went with the cheapest flight, even though they loved having more room.

I love him as a director, but in this case, he just needs to suck it up and admit that the airline did what was best for all involved.

According to his twitter, he was easily able to have both arm rests down and his seat belt on comfortably. If they are making the seats to `comfortably` fit him, then there should be NO problem with him flying. Fair enough if, in comparision it looks like he`s in a childs chair, but clearly he`s not that fat!

Holy crap, Kevin Smith is not that fat!! He`s a chunky guy, but there are plenty of celebrities out there bigger than him (comedians especially). When that law was made, I thought it was regarding deathly obese people who couldn`t buckle their seat belt (I`m certain he can). KS is easily under 300 lbs, which is more than I can say about the average American.

itsallfake, I would like links to those cases, as I have never heard of any of them. The only problem I have ever heard with Southwest is the girls who wouldn`t stop swearing, and when they were kicked off they said the were kicked off because they were too "pretty" to fly.

So in this case, id put money on the fact that the stewardess knew who smith was, probably still holds a grudge over Dogma, and decided to punish him using her express stewardess prvileges.

Southwest is known for pulling crap out just to piss people off though. The company gives their stewardesses too much decision making power. One case that made it on the news and eventually oprah, was a case of a fairly hot blonde girl wearing a skirt (that was to her knees) and a tank top and the stewardess who was quite frankly over weight and ugly told the blonde that she wasn`t allowed to fly because her clothes were a distraction. She had no other change of clothes and after a large deal the stewardes finally let her fly but only if the girl covered herself to her neck in a blanket. Another case was a stewardess would not let a mother on the flight with her baby because the baby might be a distraction to passengers. This was the same episode of oprah and made national news as well. in both cases SW defended the stewardesses decisions until AFTER they appeared on oprah.

Public safety aside, this has more to do with personal responsibility than it does anything else. How about this fat f**k lose some pounds before he starts blaming everyone else around him? Whoh...there`s a thought! Have you ever flown on a flight where some jerk who is obese to the point where he oozes over into your seat? It`s miserable, and I applaud SouthWest for taking a stand on this. There are many other airlines that Silent Dufus could have flown with Business Class seats to fit his big butt in but instead he tried to fly southwest and they said no. Hopefully he`ll actually use this as a wakeup call that he needs to eat a few less cheeseburgers and go to the gym for a change instead of blaming society on his woes.

Get over it already! I should not have to sit next to someone who is hogging his seat, my armrest and half my seat as well. THAT`S NOT FAIR! I pay good money for my airline tickets and should not have to be subjected to that. Planes are uncomfortable as it is and I am the one normally sitting next to a 500 lb guy (if I am traveling alone) for 10 hours. Put down the drating quadruple cheeseburgers, get off your ass and exercise. Is it REALLY that hard?

*let the flame war begin* WHOOOOOSH!
