i saw this on, i think, modern marvels. their appartments are so small that most ppls fridges are also very small. there for a square watermellen that can be tucked into the corner is very marketable. quite smart if you ask me. they make them that way simply by puting the young mellons in the boxes and letting them grow against the sides.

Just a more easily stored watermelon. I think they should do it over here personally. Better for a microfridge haha.

Someone might have already said this, (but I don`t read the comments so w/e),

Those are made by placing the melon in a wooden box so that it grows into a square shape.

1000 year old?...Actually the first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt and is depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphics on the walls of their ancient buildings. Watermelons were often placed in the burial tombs of kings to nourish them in the afterlife.

Yeah, they`re genetically made so that farmers can pack them better, ship them more efficiently and make more money... or something like that.

I think it`s been around for a while yadarfyn.
"In Japan, farmers of the Zentsuji region found a way to grow cubic watermelons, by growing the fruits in glass boxes and letting them naturally assume the shape of the receptacle.[7] The square shape is designed to make the melons easier to stack and store, but the square watermelons are often more than double the price of normal ones. Pyramid shaped watermelons have also been developed and any polygonal shape may potentially also be used" (wikipedia)

They grow them in a box which shapes them so they can fit in the fridge. Not as high-tech as one might think.
0

Male 363
old but still cool, they did this so that your watermelon fits in the fridge better. They use a series of boxes to shape them like that while the melons grow.

This isn`t anything new. I remember seeing pictures of these when I was a little kid, and it was like a "brain teaser" to ask us in school to figure out what advantages a square watermelon has. The answer was that they are easier to stack and won`t roll off the table.
