Link: How To Get Better Service By Being An A-Hole? - We`ve all had terrible customer service at one time or another, right? Well apparently, acting like a jerk help.

I`ve done the one that said "Abonded Ship" before and it does work. The company will try to do everything in there power to make you stay. Usually, they give great offers and try to help you out, but sometimes they try to you pooty consulation prizes and worst poo you don`t need. Just be careful, play it smart.

Abandoning ship, used as suggested, isn`t being an arsehole. It`s being reasonable. If the company is consistently annoying you or failing to provide the service you are paying for, move to a competitor who provides better service.

The only problem with this (I know this is a sarcasm style self-help article) is that if you master these methods, it means you are an a-hole like everyone had been saying for years.

Or you could be generally nice and get on the good side of everyone so they feel more generous towards you when you ask POLITELY for something.

I manage a retail business and my entire staff always knows who the repeat non-nice individuals are and we always have small subtle ways of getting back at them .

Corporations and governments have deliberately put obstacles in their customers way to frustrate and annoy them to the point that they`ll just give up and acquiesce.

IF you aren`t persistent and strong they WILL walk all over you.

Hm, I work as a pharmacist. The jerk customers? You don`t even want to know what we do to them. We know who the problem customers are, and we have their social. Granted it has never gone that far, but really? Do you honestly want to keep pissing off the people that put pills in a bottle to keep you alive?

Line I always give Rogers if they are pissing me off:
"I have cable, a landline, internet, and 2 cell phones all provided from you. If this problem is not resolved, I will be canceling all of them."
So far I`ve gotten what I wanted. ^-^V

yeah whatever I would hang up on all the non-nice individuals at the phone company call center. being a needless prick will still get you nowhere unless they want you to shut up. Yeah. Way to stick it to those hourly minimum wage dickheads. Dickheads.

    This isn`t being an a**hole.

    This is being productive.

Being an a**hole is when you start pulling crap like:

"My computer isn`t working. I want a rep."
    "Have you plugged it in?"
"WHAT THE HELL DO I LOOK LIKE?!?! A MORON?!?! OF COURSE I PLUGGED THE.. wait... Well, thanks for nothing, assface."

Jerk customers are the ones who demand you cut their pizza in equilateral triangles, or demand you take back their iPod for free even when they told you two days ago, "Warranty? Nah, I`m not gonna break it. Only idiots break iPods..."

This advice is merely a means of getting what you want done, done. Lots of customer service reps(coming from one) know they can do something, but are too lazy to do it so they`ll say they can`t.

Also, there`s a reason it`s minimum wage: anyone can be a customer service rep.

    It`s easy. Really, really, easy. It`s also annoying. But if people actually did their jobs, they`d realize they can use that small amount of cash to save up/pay off for whatever, then GET A BETTER JOB. O.o;;

Most of these tips can be useful if you find yourself in a situation where the company you are dealing with is refusing to do something they clearly should be doing, with one BIG exception: DON`T LIE, especially to a phone rep. They take notes, and if your story doesn`t match up with the notes on the account you will be written off as a scammer, you will not get what you want, and no one will cry a tear when you leave.

If you find yourself having to use these tips on a regular basis with a particular company, go straight to taking your ball elsewhere to play. They either have really crappy customer service or you need services that they cannot provide. If you regularly find yourself having to use these tips with most of your interactions with companies you do business with, there`s a good chance that the problem is you, not them.

lol that kinda reminds me of working at Home Depot...been a cashier there for almost 2 years and I`ve learned that if the customer complains enough, they`ll get almost whatever the hell they want.

I agree that you should be persistent if you want something, but acting like an a-hole is never the way to get what you want. It might SEEM like you got what you want, but in reality you got the guarantee that you`ve been overcharged or that your food has spit in it. And that the people who served you will remember you. Forever.

I hate it when I have to act like an a**hole to get what I deserve, but I`ll do it if they push me.

I remember when HP refused to make good on a defective CD burner. I kept asking for an RMA, and the kept emailing me the same 7 pages of crap for me to do to fix it. I tried to explain that I can`t fix defective hardware from my keyboard, but they refused to take it back. They jerked me around for a year till the warranty went out.

At the time, I was working in the computer lab at the public library. For three years people would come up and ask me what kind of computer they should buy. I always told them, "Stay away from HP; their warranties are no good." I`ll never know how many $1000s I cost them that way. Then the library decided to replace ALL their computers, and they asked me what I recommended. I told them the same thing. They never even took a bid for HPs, and they ended up buying Gateways. I now that was about $20,000.

Don`t get mad; get even. }-)

moefreak, you`re right about two things:

    1. Never be an a**hole unless you never intend to go back there.

    2. NEVER be an a**hole to anyone who will be handling your food.

Other than that, feel free to stink up the joint.

I used to work in customer service. This guy would get the bare minimum of service from me. If you want good service, write the name down of the person who answers your call and use it frequently while talking with them. You`d be suprised how well this works. It shows you care about who they are and you`re not just treating them as a cog in the wheel. They will probably show you the same courtesy. If you do get stuck though telling them you work in customer service usually gives you a little extra leverage.

For one thing you should know your facts before you start acting like an a-hole to try and get what you want/need. Often times from my experience in customer service, customers expected more than they received because they didn`t bother to read up on the subject at hand or just made assumptions.

Anyone who ever called and spoke with me calmly and in a courteous manor would ensure superior customer service. I would work on their issue well after their call, and follow up on it days later to make sure it was resolved.

If they called up b*tching and being rude and derogatory, I would give them minimum assistance to the point of resolving the issue, or pointing them toward how to resolve it and nothing more.

Also these are real people who get grief all day long. It burns you out at after a time. So you`d probably be surprised how much harder these people will work for you if you bother to show them some courtesy.

So, yeah. Go act like a jerk, and see what it gets you.

...I hate douche bags like this guy at my work. I work in retail and have to deal with customers face to face. However, I work at Charlotte Russe and deal mostly with horrible angry women who are always PMSing.

Amen bat. I work retail on the night shift and often have to deal with drunk, high, or just plain crazy customers. On the other side of the counter I try to deal with floor-level employees with dignity and respect and if I have to cop an attitude about something I ask to speak to a manager. I know from being in their shoes that they are trained to do whatever it takes to keep you from filing a complaint with their corporate overlords.

This is COMPLETELY wrong. Seriously, anyone that follows this is a moron. As someone who has been working retail for 6 years, i can safely say that being an a**hole is NOT a good idea. We kicked people out of our store or called the cops if the customer was unruly.
