"Ew. I hate people who just stand there filming. Not even watching. WHY? No one even wants to see your s hitty cell video!"

The people with cell phones aren`t filming. It`s a neuvo rendition of holding a lighter up in the air. Nonetheless, I`d rather be at the concert on the top.

i`ve never been to a concert like the bottom picture, and i`ve been to a lot. it`s likely they`re at something much softer than the top picture. it`s an unfair comparison.

I don`t think they`re making a video, I believe they`re mimicking holding up lighters... without that whole danger of setting something on fire thing.

Probably completely different genres of music playing at these two concerts, imo

Go to Mayhem Fest. You`ll see what I mean.

The funny thing is, twenty years from NOW, we`ll be looking at the cell-phone holding as "wild" and "bad-ass".

I hate to imagine how much more passive we will become at such events.

I would think a better comparison should be the lighters in the then pic and the phones in the now pic

lol it all depends on what concert you`re going to kids... even if the venues were the same... if you`ve got some crooner playing instead of a rock band or rap artist... everyone will be sitting and taking pictures instead

Um, in the "concerts: then" pic, does "then" mean like two weeks before "now"? Taking a look at how the people are dressed, especially the shoes and the guy`s hat, I`d say that pic wasn`t taken too long ago and the creator of this simply made it black and white.

What, the bottom pic is just a slow song. Not as many people carry lighters anymore, so we use or phones. I went to a concert last year, and it pretty much looks like the first pic. I only got to go crowd surfing though.

I don`t know.. the one on top looks kinda like the one I went to last month... ;) People just didn`t get as much air since there was nothing real high and the ceilings were kinda low. I did get a few bruises and my friend got a black eye tho!

Seriously, sad. Totally agree with yepimbored. I HATE how a lot of people can`t seem to live without their phones for a single minute. Even if I go for an evening walk with my friend, she`ll carry her cell and start chatting with her bf if he calls. That interrupts the flow of our conversation and bores me to death.
Almost everyone has a cellphone nowadays, but hardly any people have cellphone etiquette.

two things that have ruined the concert of today:
1) Over Commercializing
2) you`re not even part of it anymore because you can`t even see the performer!

I wish cell phones had never been invented. I seriously think they have contributed to the loss of our personal time and freedom. We`re tied to the damn things. People go in to panic mode if they`re without them for 10 minutes. Back in the 80`s, most people`s day was over at 5pm and you didn`t worry about "work" until 8am. Now your boss is nagging you at 8pm, sending you emails at midnight and P`d off if you don`t respond in 30 seconds. It`s the DB equivalent of a Rolex ca. 1988. "Oh, you don`t have an iPhone- what`s wrong with you? Can`t you afford a Droid? You need a smart phone!" No, you need a life!

And Yes the whole adjusting the lighters to make the flame stupidly big can still be done as Lionhart says.. but now it is just a practical joke called the Eyebrow Burner..

Biggest load of bullpoo I have ever seen in my life. They are just comparng two completely different types of gig. Those types of gigs still exist, I go to them all the time, they are just bands that aren`t absolutely huge. You could never have a really famous band in a small dingy little gig venue and do poo like that because there are far too many people who want to see them. I go crowd surfing all the time at gigs, and often the singer or guitarist will dive straight into the pit!

Re: My photo: THAT is Patience of The Grates, currently resident in Brooklyn NY. I saw at a small gig in Brisbane Aust. where she crowd surfed right across a room and then thanked the audience for not feeling her up! :) ... (sigh!!) those were great times!

They still do, all you have to do is take the metal guard off and adjust the plastic tab inside. If it doesn`t have one, enlarge the gas hole with a needle.

"Bic, #1 when it comes to burning sh*t"

Yeah, I remember when they first came out, they`d throw a flame about 8-9".

"Cell phones don`t burn your thumbs."

Neither do lighters if you`re smart enough to hold them at an angle with your thumb below the flame. I searched Google and Yahoo images for a pic to link to showing how to hold a lighter without burning your thumb. Apparently, I`m the only person in the world who knows how to do this, so I took this picture for you.

And lighters won`t give you crippling arthritis in your thumbs by the time you`re 30.

Also, `big band concerts` have always been rather lame. Never could they be as fun, and as personal as a small venue show. It really has not much to do with decade, but rather the selection of people and bands that are involved.

It`s a bunch of kids that think they`re cool using their phones as mini-lights because people used to use lighters. The fact that this happens gives me less faith in the youngest generation (which, sadly, I`m a part of).

vv Smagboy, no point trying to talk sense to the StarTroll, he`s right! Soooo very right!
He`s smart, doesn`t let little things like facts and truth deter him. After all, every band in the 20th century used just 4 instruments, eh?

@StarDagger: I could go on and on, but, let me be brief: American Blues (pick any artist, but, if you want guidance, try Roberts Johnson or Cray), Kurt Vonnegut Jr., or, let`s see, Tommy Emmanuel ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQhECkexm... )... be sure to see at least 3:30 to 4:45, Toni Morrison. Or, or, or...

Further, do you realize the amount of time you`re ... ah, never mind. No need to try to shine light when none`s wanted. :-(

Well, music sort of died after the end of the 19th century so you can put up some sheet music of classical against the 4 instrument ditties that plagued the 20th century and are still doing so today.
Sad thing is that literature and art also has taken a nose dive.
While there are some decent examples of music, art and literature they are few and far between now.
We do not even require the leads in a band to be able to sing. Contrast that to the 50+ minutes the Valkyrie must sing in "the Valkyrie", part of Wagner`s Ring cycle (which in total is 15 hours+ of opera over 4 different nights).

I sincerely hope that we get back to real music. Here is to hoping for a Golden Age after the mini-dark age we are in now.
