That entire article does not mention once the fact that the billboard is referring to black people as another species, which is more damaging and offensive than just targeting a propaganda campaign at black people.

If you label another race a different species it has a huge effect on how people view other HUMAN BEINGS! Is it 1892? Are we still trying to claim "scientifically" that minorities and women are biologically inferior and different than white people?

    Racist?

Hmmm, I actually think its a closer call than that. Fact is that statistically speaking, black women have more abortions per capita than whites. I`m decidedly pro-choice, and while anti-abortion activists piss me off, on a basic level they simply care about children, which isn`t all that deplorable.

Sure there is a racial element to it - it is a billboard SPECIFICALLY speaking to black women...but its not implying anything offensive, its simply addressing the FACT that black women have more abortions per capita.

What MIGHT be racist is the fact that in some white people`s heads, they mutter to themselves, "aren`t there already too many black children born into single mother households on welfare?" THAT is the racist aspect, but it derives from the observers, not the message.

It`s racist because it`s equating black children to animals. Plus who drating cares about abortions. Maybe black women have more because they`re a disadvantaged group and can`t say no to abusive douchebags or have less access to proper effective birth control etc. I`d say it`s a money issue over a racial issue. (Although the two are probably tied, but aah whatever).

I view it more as an racist billboard, though it was probably unintentional. Humans as a whole are a species. Proper wording might be along the lines of "African American children are in danger", or something. Actually, anything would have been better then what they wrote.

Although the Pro-life in me agrees with their message somewhat.

It`s not necessarily "black people," but rather people of any race in low-income urban areas, whether African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, etc.

    ***THEORY ONLY***

Low-income urban areas, generally speaking, have higher rates of prostitution: we`re in a recession, times are tough, etc. Also(usually, but not always) there are more kids with less knowledge of safe sex and safe sexual practices.

Lower income can lead to higher faith, aka "God will help us out in the end." Most religious people in America are Christian. Many Christians are against birth control/contraceptives.

Now we have a bunch of pregnant women, because it "felt good," or using birth control "isn`t right" or "I forgot to put one on my client" or "I`d get paid more without one," etc.

And abortion`s something you`ll end up turning to if you`re already too broke to pay for your own bills, and/or if you`re too young or too ill equipped to carry a c

Naturally speaking, though, the demographics in Atlanta show that there is a high percentage of African-American people.

Just like in Houston, we have a high percentage of Hispanics, etc. Nothing racist about it. The Atlanta billboard would attempt to target African-Americans because they`re the majority in the areas they`re looking at.

Planned Parenthood clinics are placed around lower-income areas to provide not only abortions when things go wrong, but initial information and education on how to prevent ever needing an abortion in the first place.

Poverty levels would only increase if methods of contraception, birth control, and abortion were denied.

More kids + the same amount of money = broke.

AND, it`s impossible to prevent unwanted pregnancy by teaching "abstinence" : sex feels good, is healthy for you, and is something awesome to pass time with.

So it`s more reasonable to inform people how to have baby/STD free sex, and options for if you screw up. Hence Planned Parenthood.

This delusional paranoia is right on up there with the loons that think they are being gang stalked, or believe in MK Ultra and other Government conspiracies. It`s trash. This idea that all black people should feel some connection to slaves who lived bad lives hundreds of years ago is backwards thinking nonsense. If you go back far enough there would be few people whose culture were not born to slavery at one point.

First of all this is definitely walking the lines of racism. Secondly, abortion rates have less to do with race and more to with poverty and social standing. This is a shock campaign that they can get away with because they couldn`t put their typical mutilated baby pictures on a billboard. drat anti-abortionists. PRO CHOICE!!!!!

@Paul1582: Catholicism is the largest denomination of Christianity. It comprises over half of all Christians, making it the MAJOR denomination.

(I`m excluding Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches for the sake of convenience: the percentage of members by exclusion is hardly a loss of numbers.)

The majority of Catholics abide by the decree of the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church does not agree with any methods of contraceptive.

The DO allow "Natural Family Planning," but due to the fact that many women`s menstrual cycles are prone to NOT be exactly "28" or "30" or "26" days, every single time, as well as the fact that sperm can survive anywhere from 1-7 days in the uterus, hardly makes that an "effective" form.

It`s akin to saying "Oh, we use the withdrawal method."

***Abstinence is not a form of birth control/safe sexual practices. Kids abstain, but they`re not using birth control, are they?

Okay, back to topic: Roman Catholic Church doesn`t agree with condoms, the pill, the patch, the shot, vaginal rings or dams, spermacide, etc.

So either you`re not using birth control, you`re using Natural Family Planning with a small chance you might make it with no kids, or you`re a hypocrite to your religion.

OK, I want to talk about this theory a little bit, since you have so vehemently argued your (seemingly, unless you can provide a source) incorrect statistical data.

While lower income areas may have "higher faith" they also have a bigger problem which is less education and effective community services.

I`ve already adressed the Christian thing so I`ll leave it alone.

Planned Parenthood is not in low income areas to clean up the oopsies as you`ve implied. Planned Parenthood is an organization which focuses on providing education, as well as safe and affordable sexual health care, which is needed in these areas that have as I said less of these things.

There`s more but we`ll start with that.

My appolgoies, BumbleBB. Seems like I should`ve payed more attention.

I`m guessing she got it from Wikipedia, where it says that there were 1.147 billion members of the catholic church in 2007, and further down that it`s

"encompassing approximately half of all Christians and one sixth of the world`s population, making it the largest organized body in any world religion, although the number of practicing as opposed to lapsed Catholics worldwide is not reliably known."

    Following the sources, we get
    >http://www.adherents.com/adh_branch... and http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4243727.stm.

The bbc link is from 2005, and says there are 1.1 (ish) billion catholicly baptized members. The adherents website looks a tad shadier, but reports roughly the same numbers, though lower, so it looks to be outdated statistics (and it mentions encyclopedia br

Now, the statistics about religion will (almost) always be estimates. But it`s estimated that there are about 2 (very ish) billion christians in the world According to Encyclopædia Britannica online (I can`t link you to the article, because I`ve got access to it through my uni, but I have a screen shot, if you want it).

The Cia world factbook claims that there are 6.7 billion people in the world. 33.32% of them are christians. When further broken down, 16.99% of the world population are catholics, acording to them. Once again, these are 2007 estimates. Well, the world population number is july 2009.

Hmm, so outside of the US those numbers might be true, but intially since our argument hinged on the US policies regarding abortion it`s sort of reaching. Even then those numbers aren`t more than half RC.

Well, I`ll agree that Simims wording was unclear, but she never specifically said half the US. I don`t know if she was refering to the us, or had lost control of her arguments, and was just going along for the ride (imagine a trolley with 3 people on it, going down a steep hill, holding on for dear life; now that was a fun night). I`m just here to provide the facts.

Also, Sweden has quite a bit lower amount of RC, seeing as it`s a predominantly protestant, and also a very secular, nation.

Thanks again fabarati. I suspect your right on what happened here, but hey there`s no harm in investigating. Ultimately it`s pretty irrelevant. I usually just like to make people work to convince me.

It`s a good thing black people aren`t the same species as white people; otherwise, this billboard would be really offensive.

It seems to me that the message is pretty clear. If you`re a racist, and you hate black people, and you want to reduce their population as much as possible by the most efficient and cost-effective means, vote Democrat and contribute to Planned Parenthood.

The site that the billboard points to has some very interesting statistics. Also the co-founder of NARAL and former abortionist doctor`s testimony of why he became pro-life. Good Read.

This seems like an extreme amount of propaganda and marketing to me, Anti-abortionists usually go to an extreme to make people look at they`re protests and what not. I think this is awful to be completely honest, but that`s america!

I don`t find this shocking. Religion has a long history of lying. What I do mind is they are tax free entities. If these whack job institutions were taxed to the full extent they might not have the extra dough to place BS billboards in retard zones.

ha oh my someone hasnt heard of the human genome project. but it makes sense wat the ad is trying to say, kids in africa dying everyday. its been like that since be4 apartheid, so over 25 years of kids in ethiopia dying? plus black men in the us dont seem to live past 30 without being shot by the kkk. srry, i mean police.

@sfcg, sorry and Ireland. It just takes credibility away from your argument when you make up information and statistics. I am not a fan of abortion, but the truth of the matter is, if you aren`t responsible enough to use birth control, you probably aren`t going to be a very responsible parent. And just so i don`t offend anyone, I know more than a few very good unplanned parents.

"Black women accounted for the majority of abortions in Georgia in 2006, even though blacks make up just a third of state population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

the overall decline in violent crime in many regions of north america is very strongly correlated with regions that legalized at least some form of abortion rights roughly 25 years ago.

Black children, and by extension children in general, are HARDLY an endangered species. For every woman that has an abortion, there are fifty more that are pumping out an unplanned, unwanted baby every nine months - a baby that will 99 times out of 100 be nothing more than a drain on society in general. I`m going to go register notenoughabortions.com.

this is just offensive and stupid. no matter race, if a woman decides to do this, it`s her choice. frankly, I would rather her get it done safely in a facility then a back alley abortion. I have no idea where these people`s heads are, but this is just another pro-life/pro-choice debate with race as the twist. ban abortions based on race? drat you and teach your kids sex education so they don`t do something stupid, like getting a back alley abortion...!!

@sfcg... since when is 13 half of 51? 13 of the 51 eastern and western European countries allow at least one abortion on request. Many allow them under certain circumstances. Only 2 DO NOT ALL ABORTION FOR ANY REASON. Vatican city and Malta, and im not sure if Vatican city can be counted as a country.
