Was it maybe because the brutality of the Nazis? Nope. Was it because holocaust conspiracies? Nah, it"s better than that

Yeah, I mean, if kids didn`t know what it`s like having to hide from a tyrannical regime how can you continue to indoctrinate them, right?

Oh, right, silly us...indoctrinate away!

big. damn. fail.

we read the play version and that was very clean...

but on the other hand...

(begin rant)

WHY IS SOCIETY SO AGAINST HOMOSEXUALS?! its not like they choose to be gay! like people don`t choose to be straight. gay people are often the nicest, most awesome people in the world.

(end rant)

Yeah Rick S. I thought this was over the top there banning a newer more explicit version not the ones taught in school. Matter fact when we covered this book in middle school it was part of a literature book so it pulled a excerpt from the script we didn`t read the whole thing, when I seen all this sex talk I was like whaaat?

If they plan on keeping sexual scenes from the curriculum good for them, it allows students o focus on what the importance of it was about and not going "ooooo, girls touching boobies".

HAHAHAHA I totally remember reading that part. she touched her chick friends boobies then wanted to kiss her.

I know, I know. Actually I really *did* think people wouldn`t get it Davy, and they`d think that was *really* the last sentence in the diary.

I won`t say the average person is dumb IMHO, but I consider you well above average IQ-wise, and yet...

...it`s spelled "too".

:-P :-) :-P

vv Don`t be to hard on Lionhart, bankvole. He finds it hard to keep up with our Irish wit, being Australian and all. It`s not right to poke fun, he was born that way. Poor bastard.

You missed the rest of it off though. "I started playing it flat out, was having a fabulous time, and here`s a coincidence - even though we hid in the attic for years, that very same day a bunch of nazi soldiers found us somehow!"

ElDavo: Not every county in Virginia is that backwards. Culpeper is just a special kind of special. Been there, done that, long story short, parents there are IDIOTS.

when my theater group in my highschool did "the diary of anne frank", our ultra conservative principal that nobody liked asked that the brief, and I mean BRIEF mention of sexuality that those Virginians are freaking out over too much to be taken out or she`d cancel the show. Some people are just too uptight.

lol a Real downer indeed.

Fascist regimes do not like the way the book makes them look.

And, oh noes, a teen girl has sexual desires!! Newsflash, there are upper middle class girls who whore their bodies just to buy high end clothes, I doubt a few words in a book will change their outlook on life!

@ Inaria

I have read the version in question, and it`s seriously not bad. It`s far less sexual than "Go Ask Alice" which we read in junior high.

How bloody long can a people keep using the Homosexuality card? It`s really starting to annoy me. Though it helps that every time someone uses a card like this I tell them to replace the word "homosexual" with "black" and see if it`s not discrimination.

I know: lets just teach our children that sex and homosexuality don`t exist. And while we`re at it, lets not let them learn about cuss words, murder, rape, racism, drugs, or abuse. Yeah, that`s the perfect world for our children. An ignorant one.

a book that involves the brutal murder of a 13 year old girl is fine for students ...
as long as there are no gays?

Hold on - homosexuality? These teachers are aware that Hitler wasn`t just after Jews, right? Homosexuals were also perscuted. Along with Roma people (gypsies) and the disabled.
History can never be swept under the rug, dimwits, even when it`s sexual.

Isn`t the title a little decieving? In the article don`t they say they`re just pulling the one version with the added sexual themes in it?

Anyways, I see nothing wrong with wanting to censor something they consider sexually explicit. The school doesn`t have control over what children see on television etc, while they`re at home, but that doesn`t mean that they can`t assert control over what they feel is inappropriate material during school time.

I never read the version of Anne Frank that they`re speaking of, but I`m pretty sure the kids won`t be missing out by reading the shorter? version...

O.o that was longer than i expected...

No, it wasn`t. The newer version was cut. The article clearly states that the original version will continue to be taught. Nice headline, I-A-B.

why is it that in the US violence is okay, but anything remotely sexual isn`t? Isn`t one more pleasant than the other?

How has this managed to make the news? Basically the school is only teaching the version of the book that has relevant material .. I mean, what kind of sick drat wants to reas about a 13 year old girls sexual urges anyway?

Do some of you even read the article. The school isn`t saying they won`t assign the Anne Frank Diary as required reading. They are only removing a specific version of it from the curriculum. Why are people so quick to jump on something and start bashing it.

On the one hand, I am disappointed that schools won`t teach the most significant historical book of its time, a diary actually written by a holocaust victim trying to hide from the Nazis.

On the other hand, when I was a kid, the paperback of "Diary of Anne Frank" at my school library had a page torn out. You can guess which page. Someone had stolen it to keep for their very own wank material. Pathetic but true.

Seems like a bunch of ado about not much. The thing I took away from it is that the parents who are complaining the loudest about the sex are probably the most likely to become grandparents while their kid is still in high school. Repression has a nasty tendency to backlash, hard.

(And yes, I do consider not teaching the most complete version of the book to be censorship. No eighth grader would want to read assigned reading outside of class, so this is the exposure they get. Though admittedly, given the publicity this has gotten and the nature of the common eighth grader, I bet some of them are going to find the "uncensored" edition in the library just so they can read the "sexy" parts and giggle about them to their friends.)

"The existing version of the book is still being taught
The updated version of the book is available to students via the library"

Well that`s...a little better. But dude- `sexually explicit material?` It`s a teenage girl being honest about her blooming sexual desires and it`s something they`re all gonna feel sometime anyway. There`s nothing wrong with it at all, and it just seems kinda wrong to downright refuse to teach about it.

I facepalm so hard every time this comes up. I actually went to that school system for four years (SHAME SHAME SHAME). Sure, they aren`t banning it, like some early reports said, but the fact that they`re censoring literature is REALLY annoying to me. I even made a facebook group about it...

I swear, the only things that get that godforsaken county in the news are bomb threats and useless censorship. People there don`t even care about the sex, really, I remember when I was in eighth grade there, we made far more racy jokes than anything Anne Frank would have ever said. However, as it seems to happen all too frequently in Culpeper, someone got offended and instead of being rational about it, it became a massive issue. Half the time it seems that all parents do in that county is complain rather than take a little initiative.

Rant over.

That`s kinda disgusting to me. The diary of Anne Frank is a very important, popular and truthful book, and one of the most valuable learning resources for learning about the treatment of the Jews from a first hand perspective. Everything will have been rewritten over and over and over when its in History books, and nothing quite compares to Anne Frank`s diary. Restricting works of literature is rather vile to me.
