I dunno, but when my mom.( who "has a history of mental illness") says "hey son lets go the the range and do some shooting, It`ll be great" I would have to respectfully decline.

Bat poo crazy is what that was... not any sort of religious fervour... But hey guns and heads don`t mix..In blighty we have the same sort of thing.. but instead of shooting, they write strongly worded letters to the daily mail about "the state of society today!"
I believe that statement was directed at someone`s derogatory comment about Americans. But sure, see what you want in it.
The post I quoted from did not mention Americans. The post they were replying to did not mention Americans. It was about Christians, not Americans.

So where did you pull Americans from? What was that about seeing what you want in it?

You regard Christians as a race? Does that make sense to you? Or are you just playing the race card because you`re low enough and desperate enough to do so and you know you don`t have a rational argument?

For those who can`t be bothered to look it up:

The CCR5-delta32 mutation results in immunity to a variety of viruses in people who have two copies. Most relevantly nowadays, it makes a person immune to current strains of HIV. It`s thought to be far more common around here because of the devastating plagues, especially the Great Death of the late 1340s. So many people died that a previously very rare immunity became much more common amongst the survivors.
And btw, discrimination race assumes the existence of "race" itself. The US Government Human Genome Project indicates that there is no distinct genetic basis to racial types. Based on this evidence, "racial characteristics" logically cannot exist either, such as group differences in eye color or human hair color.
I disagree slightly - there are some differences that have strong tendencies to show in different groups.

Despite that, I agree that race doesn`t actually exist for two reasons. Firstly, the differences are not absolute. Secondly, they`re nowhere near big enough to support the idea of people being different races. Some of them can have massive effects, but the differences themselves are miniscule.

Example: the CCR5-delta32 mutation is far more common in people whose ancestry in the last 700 or so years is from northern Europe, Britain or Ireland. The effect is large, but it`s only one gene.
Ooh, that was a good troll, just sliding in that little attack against Islam in there.
It is one interpretation of some passages in Islam, so it isn`t an entirely unjustified attack.

However, if they were thinking of the verse I think they`re thinking of, I think they`re wrong because they`re missing the context. The clearest passage about striking down unbelievers was given directly before a battle and appears to apply specifically to the battle. A pre-battle revelation to psych up your soldiers and convince them that your god is on their side, which is hardly unusual in religiously motivated wars.
Doesn`t the bible say something about not killing?
No, it doesn`t. That`s a very common misunderstanding stemming from a mistranslation. Far from forbidding killing, the Christian bible contains all sorts of orders to kill.

Besides, it still makes sense in a Christian context even if it`s a forbidden killing because in a Christian context her son`s soul will go to heaven.
This is absolutely NOTHING to do with faith, religion or a belief system.
Of course it does - religion was her reason and her actions make sense in that context. According to her religion, her son would go to heaven. So why not kill him? *In the context of her religion*, she sacrificed her soul to save her son`s. Isn`t that a noble act in that context?

Religion is involved.
Would you be so adamant if she killed her son so he could go to the Death Star? To live in a pineapple in the bottom of the sea?
Religion is not treated the same way as those delusions.
That, my friend, is stereotyping and to a degree, racism.
You regard Christians as a race? Does that make sense to you? Or are you just playing the race card because you`re low enough and desperate enough to do so and you know you don`t have a rational argument?

Oh and, Madest- Christianity does not necessarily entail believing in an "invisible man in the sky". That`s a rather shallow and limited view of it all. I don`t personally know a single religious person who believes in a literal man in the sky. Arguments about invisible men and spaghetti monsters are, at best, great examples of the `reductio ad absurdum` fallacy.

Just saying.

That which is not currently empirical encompasses an unsettlingly large amount of the universe.

Maybe that scares the bible thumpers and the hardcore atheists in equal measures.

Also, it`s like 3 am here and I`m just a little tipsy, so I hope I`m not being too... something. :P

"Why are people saying that whoever posted this is trying to slant religion? She really did believe she was sending him to heaven. She was mentally ill. No where does it say "Woman kills son because of Christianity". People making assumptions..."

It was originally posted with a different description... pointed out how religion screws everything up and asked if an atheist would have done this. Description was changed an hour later.

Whether you believe in a murderous megolomaniacal deity or not, you cannot dispute that the woman used religion as her excuse to murder. Once again, religion is used as the crutch to a wrong deed. A very common use of it I`d say.

Not the same comparison. None of those killed in the name of atheism, they killed in the name of greed, and control, and often in the name of a bastardized version of socialism--but it was all really for greed. A lot of religions do the same thing, but the grunts think they are dying for God, but the pope knows they are dying for his coffers.

It`s the same game, but played to a different tune--religion can inspire tremendous amounts of murder, whereas you need a different mechanism to get the same results. Atheism isn`t one of those mechanisms.

Yeah, no, religion can`t be blamed for this poo. It can be blamed for a lot of fcuked up poo, but not this. She could have just as easily got caught up in The Matrix and murdered her son so she wouldn`t morph into an Agent. If there were a Church brainwashing mothers to murder their sons, and a whole group of them did it, then yeah, I`d say find the fcukers responsible and lock `em up. But this is pretty clearly a case of someone experiencing a severe psychotic break incorporating religious beliefs into her diseased mind in order to rationalize a horrific act.

This wasn`t religions fault...I mean, I am not religious at all. But blaming this on religion is just stupid. Its the fu*cking insane lady. She obviously has a mental illness, and I assume in /her/ mind this was a completely normal thing to do. A normal sane religious person would never do this, I can assure you. Only people who are messed up in the head would. End of story.

@Jake_Justus:
This is classic religious diversionary tactics. Somehow an unrelated counter argument proves the existence of an imaginary being and that its followers are somehow righteous.

No, a better and more true point would be that not all religious people are mentally ill but some are, and can kill.
Not all atheists are mentally ill, but some are, and can kill (like the examples you quoted).
Mentally healthy atheists do not commit genocide, serial kill or start unnecessary wars.
Otherwise mentally healthy (but indoctrinated) religious people WILL and FREQUENTLY DO murder and start wars in the name of their religion.

Why is it that you only bring Christians into it. Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and many other religions worship a God of some sort. Are you saying that every single person with some sort of Faith has a mental illness? Maybe you are the one with the mental illness for not believing in anything. Actually you are more than likely a hypocrite and you do believe in something you have no control over. I for the longest time have been on the fence on my religion but honestly I am no longer afraid of it. If you have a problem with myself and others believing in a God, then you are the one with the problem. You can`t hate the whole world for believing in something. And all of those men on death row who are "born-again" as you say, they need something to believe in; they have nothing else to live for. Just because you don`t have faith does not mean that you can constantly bash ours. If you want to debate Religion I`m sure you can find some forums to that in.

@ SaintsFan. To state that this had NOTHING to do with religion ignores the facts of the case. Many horrible deeds are done in the name of God every day. To deny scientific fact and the quest for knowledge for a ritualized fantasy ending is absurd to me.

madest - This is absolutely NOTHING to do with faith, religion or a belief system. This has everything to do with a mental illness. Would you be so adamant if she killed her son so he could go to the Death Star? To live in a pineapple in the bottom of the sea? I think not. I`m not a religous person so don`t think that a Jesus freak is after you. Your logic IS flawed. Don`t use the rantings of a crazy woman to blame an entire group. That, my friend, is stereotyping and to a degree, racism.

Madest, your logic is just as flawed as Westboro Baptist Church. I`m not a believer by far but even I know the difference. Other than the crazies that will be out there, a true Christian doesn`t have a problem with separating reality from what you consider fantasy. They know that God is not going to do anything for them but watch. We have our own free will and our right to exercise it. What we do with our lives is our choice. It`s the time after death that is decided by God, with what you did with your life being the weighing factor in his decision. For you group all Christians in with this woman or Westboro; or people who group all Islamic with Al-Qaeda; or people who start hate issues because they can`t respect someone`s belief, like you, is not logic. It`s stupidity.

You shouldn`t be so quick to generalize. I could just as easily say all Canadians are nothing more than bitter and baseless anti-American people, but that wouldn`t be a fair representation. Also, even though there are fanatics in religions or most groups for that matter, something like this suggests mental illness outside of religion (if you want to call it a mental illness.)

She had a history of mental illness. There is no reason to believe Christianity or ANY religion had anything to do with this. And even if she claimed to follow a religion, I`m pretty sure her admission ticket to heaven of any sort is void now, because if you actually believe/ follow a religion (rather than just claiming to), you would not do this. I think this is a no-no no matter who you worship.

Sure there are religious nuts who pull crap like this, but they`re far outweighed by those who actually follow some of the actual core tenets of most religions and go out and get involved in service projects(missions) and programs like the Salvation Army. I think that makes them better than the atheists who do nothing but sit around and troll christians.

Oh and she was mentally ill, so of course let`s blame it all on religion. So yes, if she was an atheist she may have ended up doing something like this anyways.

If you`re f`d up in the head, you`re f`d up in the head. Don`t blame religion.

Nope. No one has ever killed a family member in cold blood for any reason that they did not attempt to explain in language tinged with religious tones.

Well, except that one guy feautured in Esquire the other month who`s on death row for killing his family... strangled his wife during sex, you know. Oh, and threw two of the kids into a river with bags of rocks tied on. While they were asleep. Because he couldn`t bring himself to own up to his family and tell everyone he was a failure.

But he`s probably the only one.

Whilst I am most definitely an avowed atheist, and I disapprove of much religion, I am afraid that this happened because the woman was mentally unbalanced. She would have done the same, or similar no matter what her belief- she would have phrased the notes differently.

Agreed. How can anyone feel safe with these religious lunatics surrounding us? From Osama bin Laden to Dr. Tillers killer to this batpoo crazy broad. Religion destroys lives.

Not really. She was mentally ill. At some point, even being an atheist, there would have been anything that would been her reason to shoot.
