That will destroy our economy. The Romans were open to homosexuality and the generations were separated by so much there wasn`t enough younger ones to replace the aging soldiers.

Think he was trying to say if same sex marriage were allowed to marry there would be economic stimulus from the gifts purchased for all the wedding registry.

Let me see if I can explain this. There are closet homos that will never come out the closet and will marry the opposite sex and have kids and live a non-gay life. The reason that is is because socially they do not fit in. Now you go ahead and make it socially acceptable the fear of not fitting in leaves them and now it is "normal" to be gay. Thus all the people that would never consider it will now and go out and test the water. People already have trouble talking to the other sex but try. It is easier to speak to the same sex but wrong to engage in a sexual relationship with the same sex. Lift the wrong aspect of homosexuality and people that would never consider the same sex would have no problem with now because it is socially acceptable to do so. I tried to explain that as best I could and hope this helps to further progress my point.

    @p0l4r21

If your logic were correct, then people would not be gay when it`s not socially acceptable.

People ARE gay when it`s socially unnacceptable. Therefore, social acceptability isn`t the primary factor in defining sexuality.

Also: "The Romans were open to homosexuality"

You`re thinking of the Greeks. Specifically, you`re thinking of SOME of the Greeks. Even more specifically, you`re thinking of SOME of the Greeks during SOME of their history. The Romans were not open to homosexuality at all.

Some might think you know not of which you speak, hmm?

I never referred to myself at all in that description kingdomCome. It is hard for a lot of people to speak to the opposite sex. When did I say I have trouble doing so in my statement?

@mischeif954 Did I state your name when I wrote that? No I don`t think I did. Yes there are people like you and I and many others that will never do such a thing but again I was referring to people that will so for you to interject your disagreement has no merit to what I was saying.

@goAtluvr7 Yes the Greeks did as well and I do believe you should look into your "facts" on homosexuality in the Roman empire. You might find that what you said is wrong. I hate to quote Wikipedia but there is an interesting little article and after reviewing the sources I must say it has a good backing.

uh...yeah...homosex marriage is not normal and marriage is between a man and a woman, which involves deep love, faithfulness, caring for each other and creating a family. Homos just pretty much have sex and when not having sex, they are arguing. it is not natural and they need to STOP trying to push this crap on us like its a drug of some kind. just don`t call it marriage, call it "fruity Links" or something, but definately not marriage. i know you libs and fairys don`t care about tradition and history and trample all over it so go to some other country, they need these new religions

    Know what that means?

Either way, the gays won`t breed.

Actually, the Romans didn`t accept homosexuality. They did accept man-boy love in other words, pedophilia. Each of those men were expected to marry and reproduce, so no, Romans did not accept homosexuality. Now if you meant the Greeks, well that`s entirely different, but even they expected the pedophiles to marry women. I believe the best way put by one of my professors was "women are for breeding, boys for pleasure, and goats for ecstasy." Which is really, really creepy.

OK, here`s my oppinion on all the anti-gay marriage sentiment.

The idea of marriage as a male/female unit centered on family is a completely religious concept. Throughout history the "traditional" family unit has been by far the minority. Most commonly children were raised communally and who the father was didn`t matter.

In western religion this is demonized, and because the majority of the posters here are raised in a society where western religion is the norm...

I`ll support your religious driven one man one woman agenda when you add in the entirety of your religious view.

Allow Gay marriage, or make divorce illegal. The "sanctity" of marriage is a lie if your vows mean nothing.

I don`t get it, homosexuality should NEVER be socially acceptable because it is just plain wrong. Not in an ethical/moral kind of way (I couldn`t care less what gets you off behind closed doors), but because it says "F U" to Mother Nature. At least Mother Nature says "F U"
back and "You homos can`t reproduce because YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG". No gay marriage, no they can`t adopt kids, no they are not normal.

All right just want to get a few things off my chest once (because God knows how many times we`ll all be repeating this argument again and again):

Carderis: You have a thought provoking and succinct argument which frankly I think does not have some counterattack biblical regurgitation which many cower behind. Well done, I will use this if you don`t mind. (SmilinSam has quoted his line below).

To those who oppose gay marriage, fine. You have your views, I have mine. But do NOT be a craven idiot and say "I do have gay friends", "I support gays, just not giving them the benefits of marriage", or some other bs. If you oppose gay marriage and can`t even tell ME that without also defending yourself, then you are are effectively trying to cover your arse from both sides. Don`t.

Overall, I think we have wasted too much time. Let`s try to legalize gay marriage, at least starting in the U.S. for now, before the president`s term is up. Many people have waited a long time

MrComedy says: It`s funny, because homosexuality isn`t wrong, expecting anyone to cater to homosexuals is. Love and marriage is a short bridge that is built by sexual relationship, homosexual men and women can maintain a platonic friendship with members of their attracted gender, the short leap being when sex is involved. The argument that divorce should be outlawed on the basis that it proves marriage vows are a `sham` is counter-productive to the entire movement to legalize gay marriage in the first place. Marry each other, have a ceremony, find a minister that will bless the union in the eyes of whatever deity you choose. Wear the rings, call yourselves Mr. and Mr. Whatever, have your names legally changed, I`m for it, I`ll call you married. Oh, you want the union recognized by the government? Now you`ve just made it a sham, congratulations. Imposters.

vitaliy "Considering how the U.S. spends around 7 billion dollars annually on fighting cannabis, and over 7 billion would be made from taxes, we`re losing AT LEAST 14 bil a year."

It`s a LOT worse than that. About 1 million people are arrested each year for posession -- about half of them for the first time. A single pot arrest will cut their lifetime earnings in half, since they can only get low-paying jobs, they spend more time unemployed, and they are denied educational opportunities. Even decades later, their lack of experience keeps them out of high-paying jobs.

I ran the numbers, and it came to about $600,000 in lost GDP for every first-time pot arrest -- about $300 billion per year total.

Add in the cost of eradication, interdiction, enforcement, adjudication, incarceration, coerced "treatment" programs, probation/parole supervision, and all the other problems caused by the criminal underground, and that adds another $100 billion or more.

MrComedy, you`re missing the point. In a country founded on equality for all, how is there equality when homosexuals relationships aren`t recognized as valid? Equality for all is not being protected by the government and establishes a precedent that homosexuals are second class citizens -- not for their choices, but for who they are. What`s worse is that we have a secular government (or, we`re supposed to) and the basis for the anti-gay marriage argument is deeply rooted in religion. Rationalize your anti-gay marriage arguments all you want, but they aren`t impeding on the rights of others. You`re impeding on theirs.

Every person has to recognize that the Constitution needs to protect all liberties of all people. If religious people can`t do that, they disgrace the struggles people went through for THEIR religious freedoms.

Like someone said earlier about marriage -- allow gay marriage or outlaw divorce" -- it`s the same with equality, freedom, and liberties

Give equality to all or to none. If only some freedoms are recognized for some people, then it really freedom or equality, is it?

Forgive me for not being informed on the direction of the thread, I haven`t read all the comments (for once), so maybe this has been covered already.

Not my retort (I think it was xxPinkxx), but I love it so that I must repeat it here, original author`s credit:

"Religious types: Don`t like Gay Marriage? Then shut the f*ck up and don`t get one".

@obhwfgirl: Oh, how you make me laugh, quite fitting thank you. You have such a romantic humor when it comes to understanding reality. For instance: a country founded on equality for all. Do I need to state the obvious oppressing for the native american people, an oppression which still continues almost nearly as strong today? Equality for the slaves used to build this country`s foundation? It`s odd that history has been cherry-picked to suit the arguments of legalizing gay marriage, but let`s throw another reality into the mix: this country is financed, and composed, mostly of Christians. I am not one, don`t go get your high horse, but it is a reality. Is it in the government`s best interest to appeal to Christians, or homosexuals (avoid the `Christian homosexual` strawman for a moment, please.) Bearing that in mind, is the `struggle` (Haha) really worth the civil unrest it creates? Because homosexual men and women can`t enjoy a freedom from oppression they already enjoy? Pfft

    MrComedy,

I did not in any way actually mean that divorce should be made illegal, I was just making the point that quite often we hear how gay marriage would invalidate the sanctity of marriage. This goes back to the fact that it`s a religious view.

This argument is usually coming from the right wing three time divorcee who`s vowed "til death do us part" in every marriage.

I`m just saying that the divorce rate in this country puts the light to the lie on the religious reasoning, and it comes down to nothing more than homophobia and hate, thinly masked by a religious cover soas to appear to be defending a viewpoint, rather than attacking a lifestyle.

i used to smoke but i still say there will always be people against smokin pot, especially employers. if marijuana is ever totally legalized, in all states, you will see a massive influx of mexicans moving tons more of it over the borders, the government wont see much of it except for what gets sold in stores and taxed

Sourkrauter, do you realize that if pot is legalized, American companies will sell it and the need for border smuggling will disappear?

It will bring a profit, and hurt the drug cartels supplying the pot now.
