You know, I really REALLY like it that plus sized models are breaking into the fashion world much more now... but I absolutely despise the use of the term "real women" to describe them. I`m petite. I just am; I inherited my mother`d figure. Can`t many many woman of all sizes be "real?" Am I not a real woman? Am I a fake; am I a man?

Can we, for once, have a movement that doesn`t put another group down?

Beautiful, actually beautiful. I`m not saying that all skinny and petite women are less attractive, but I reckon that women like this are simply stunning.

I`m not gay btw, I just think women are pretty :)

I find women of this size FAR more attractive than skinny, undeveloped anorexic models with no breasts or secondary sex characteristics. Someone needs to explain to the fashion/modeling industry that men like women who have breasts and look like women. We don`t like little girls who haven`t developed breasts yet.

Please use more "plus size" models like this who look like women. Large breasts = sexy!

The fashion industry isn`t designed to please men. In fact, a long time ago skinny and tall models were used because they looked like walking hangers, advertised the clothes not the body, and their tallness looked much like a realistic size from the perspective and distance of the viewers.

Of course as we all know this has had an unintentional and negative side effect on many a young girl`s psyche.

I agree Opie; `real` women is a stupid phrase. I guess they were just trying to bring across that fact that they`re not fake like those stick insect supermodels.

I`d like to see some bigger models, but not too many thanks. It`s not a good thing to show to people that being overweight is okay because it constitutes a serious health risk if it gets too bad. A few extra pounds ain`t gonna hurt your marketing though, Mr. Corporation :P

Why oh Why does it always go to the two extremes, they`re either totally boyish or fat, what in the hell would be wrong with striking compromise, like using medium sized women say uk 10-12? It totally pees me of that people seem to think that when you say "curvy woman" or "real women" it obviously means "fat". theres a reason they make "special" clothes for them...

and also back then sizes were a lot smaller... as the years have gone on.... She would probably be a size 10-12 in today`s world. I have a dress from the late 60`s early 70`s thats a size 14 and even when i was that size... it always was a bit too small for me

Being stick figure skinny is wrong and unhealthy, but being as big as the woman at the bottom isn`t healthy either.

What bugs me is that a large part of the social groups around me believe that "big isn`t beautiful".
I admit that after high school, I sort of let myself go (trying to get into shape for this year), but to have others say that I`m an "ugly fatass" is just a smidge depressing...
So I`m not as small as those girls on the runway. Heck, the last time I was, I was 8. Now I`m a woman, and women have (healthy) curves, dammit!

Believe it or not there are men and women out there that do like chubby girls but it`s damn hard to find a magazine or website that caters to that. I mean when you look up BBW you mostly see women that are 300-400lbs stuffing there faces with cake which isn`t exactly what most people have in mind when they think "chubby".

And fashion-wise it would be really nice if as a size 16 I could find a non ugly pair of pants because all the juniors and petites seem to have these adorable clothes but the bigger sizes are are sh*t out of luck. Unless your everyday walking around style happens to be a cross between "business casual" and boring. gah.

Screw what anyone else thinks... one can only go out in jeans and a band t-shirt so often before they get tired of it. I have to search long and wide to find tank tops, skirts, dresses etc that are in a good price range and my size. it gets quite annoying

So we are going with Curvy meaning fat then basically? Ok.

What you all seem to be missing the point.

Just because a size 16 is average, that doesn`t make it neither healthly nor attractive. It is just what the majority of people happen to be.

    AVERAGE does not equal HEALTHY.

Because they are not healthy, those models are overweight, whether that is the depiction of real women or not.

"Because they are not healthy, those models are overweight, whether that is the depiction of real women or not."

Overweight does not mean unhealthy either. Simply having more fat than others does not directly put one at risk, many larger women are very healthy, as well as smaller women. Women gain fat a lot faster than men because the weight helps cushion pregnancy. The one characteristic of being fatter than a lean girl does not automatically make one unhealthy.

Actually, people with a layer of fat averagely live 3 years longer than skinny people.

Note: I`m not implying these women are healthy. In fact, what they have is much more than a layer of fat. I agree, the people in these particular pictures should be trying to lose weight.

I`m afraid that article is terrible, it does not hold up for anything. On the same website are advice on obesity surgery, Pro-Life campaigns, and more. Everything is incredibly opinionated on there, I`m not quite sure how you take it seriously.

But still, I suppose one of the biggest killers with us today, obesity, is pretty healthy right.

It`s this sort of thing, the "Plus size model" that makes an overweight person comfortable about themselves, that might be great for their self esteem, but they still are not a healthy individual.

I`m not that curvy. That`s just how my body developed. What am I?

So you say you`re not that curvy, but you DO have curves. Therefore, you are a woman!

    Layer of fat?

We all need this layer of fat for warmth and energy storage, so no doubt those without it die, it`s just the amount people think is acceptable is the problem.

Okay that article was pretty bad. I`m just going on my opinion from now because my research skills have obviously been murdered by a very small night of sleep. All I`ll say on the matter is that body size, while a good indicator is health, is not always correct. I`m slender but I sure as hell am a weak wuss. Some women are large and very healthy and live a long life free from most disease, and some women are slender and very unhealthy and live a short life with lots of disease.

It is nice to see women depicted as "sexy" at this size. It makes me feel better about my situation. To the people complaining about women just using excuses to blaim their weight on, just know that there is always a reason someone is overweight and I wouldn`t consider it an excuse. Some people are overweight because of their parents (bad child hood etc) a lot of the reasons are emotional or medical. I myself am overweight because I have a hormonal problem that doesn`t allow me to process carbohydrates correctly it just turns them directly to fat. Since a non carbohyrdrate diet is nearly impossible with a small family on a small budget I just live and love what I got. Eat little and work out. HOORAY FOR SIZE 16+!!!!

Women are women, curvy or not. Hourglass, pear, apple, or test tube shape. I have just as much of a right to call myself a woman if I an a 32A cup and wear size 24 pants. I very much dislike the insulting of one group to compliment another group.

Govern: Agreed, though I`d much prefer bludgeoning weapons in the case of a complete apocalypse, bullets are going to be gone before you know it. Though I would feel much safer having a gun as back up... or two. Or more.

i have a problem with stuff like this, mainly the first and second pictures. (the last two i actually really like). as a recovering anorexic, i was heavily influenced by how women `should` look in magazines, which is why i lost a tremendous amount of weight. i know this is to support heavier women as opposed to very thin models, but they`re still fake. their skin, hair, and i`ll bet even some of their `heaviness` is photoshopped. and in the first picture, the girl second from the right simply does NOT have the figure to wear that. it looks trashy. the point is, what they`re trying to do is a good idea but it doesn`t portray women as they are or in a classy way.

This gets me so riled up that my hands are shaking. all my life my build has always been "wider" than normal. I have always, ALWAYS been ridiculed and put down because of how my body looks. I have to work really hard to maintain the same weight. But am I supposed to be ashamed of my body because it isn`t as "up to par" as society wants it? I`m not supposed to feel good about the figure I was born with? I feel completely cut off from anyone else just because of what I am. I try to do something to feel connected, only to feel cut off again.

These women are not (physically) attractive to me because they are too fat.

There are many ways somebody can be unattractive: bad skin, asymmetry, lazy eyes, buck teeth, big dumbo ears, etc.. One of those (esp. for women) happens to be "too fat". Women seem to not care if men are too fat, up to a certain point.

I can relate, though, as I am a short man, and short for men is the same as fat for women. The only thing that is better about being a short man than a fat woman is that I can`t do anything about being short; there`s no version of anorexia for being a short man, whereas a woman who is too fat can start trying to starve herself in order to be skinny.

I think both fat women and short men need to understand that not everybody can be beautiful. Some people are born with ugly cheekbones, giant gums, and misshapen noses, and some people are not. If you are fat or short, that`s just the way you are. Too bad. But you can still be a good person, and you can still be hap

Oh and another thing! Unhealthiness from obesity comes from your eating habits. Not all fat people eat nothing but junk food. Contrary to popular belief. Their bodies are just different so I could be 75lbs above normal weigt and be healthier than the person at normal weight. I have very regular doctor visits and get extensive blood work, ultrasounds and biopsies on a yearly basis because of my PCOS and they always come back normal, so I`ll know before anything gets too bad. As opposed to the majority who do the annual physical.

Being obese is a health risk. These women are by no means obese. Just because someone isn`t skinny doesn`t mean they lead an unhealthy lifestyle.

No the reason they are successful is because they are plus sized and beautiful.. Thats not to say every single large women is or that every single skinny girl is ugly.. this is just another ruse to try and and limit the amount of young girls being affected with eating disorders.. Its just more media bullpoo.

But what annoys me the most Is I have been one of those "skinny" women, my entire life and I can honestly say I have the opposite of anorexia, the way I feel about myself is not much different from larger women who hate being "fat". I hate the terms "real women have curves" and "men want something to hold onto" Bla bla bla - Its all a load of bulls**t. After years of analyzing myself and hating myself I realised something amazing.. Guess what? Everyone is different! We all like different sizes and shapes and there is no "right" way to look, you will never be happy or content if you look to the media for assurances as to what beauty is. Its subjective. And stop with the "real women" crap.. Being a real woman is usually determined by having oh.. a vagi

@DiePSPolice: the women may not look attractive to you, but they are by no means fat.The definition of thin has been so warped throughout the years, that now the only way someone can be deemed thin is by being a size 0.

Well it`s obviously not the obesity itself, I don`t think people are crushed under their own weight. Because obese people eat more fat and cholesterol, they are more subject to atheromas, therefore heart attacks and hemorrhages etc

    1) These women are beautiful, and it`s really really nice to see something other than really thin girls in magazines. Not that there is anything wrong with really skinny girls, just that there is a disproportionate amount of them in fashion magazines. I understand that people need to be a certain size to look good in all types of clothing, but that "certain size" isn`t just ultra thin.
    2. Obesity is 100% bad for you. It doesn`t mean every single obese person will die young, but it means that every single obese person is more likely to have a wide range of health problems, some of them serious.
    3. These girls are in no shape or form obese. Obesity means you are beyond overweight.

I don`t expect it I encourage it. I work out stay healthy and eat right, because it is more attractive to women and because it is a smarter idea. Just because I am a certain age does NOT mean I am a sex fiend looking for a skinny girl with big boobs. If people find overweight women attractive and don`t care about the health risks, fine for them. But don`t criticize others for going the extra mile to be more attractive. And don`t give me the bullpoo about bolemia and anerexia. Those are extremes that are not attractive or healthy and should not be condoned. Please respect me more as a human rather than clumping with an age group that makes you feel insecure.

I hate that we go from one side of the scale to the other. Women are either size 00 or size 14. I`m 5`0 and 130 pounds. While I would love to model I`m too short and I would be a `plus` size model because I wear a size 6-10(I love food on the holidays) and the fashion industry doesn`t make clothes that large for the models most of the time.

Also I would love to see real clothes on women. Yes we are wonderful to look at but not everyone wants p0rn every minute of the day.

I find it very annoying that people who don`t have to think about their weight pass judgement on those where it`s something they think about constantly! To you weight is easy to control but for people who are overweight (not the too fat to walk people but the day to day size 12-20 people) They actually think about it daily and want to change and be thinner but it`s a struggle. Nutritionists all tell you different things "Eat 6 small meals a day" "eat a large breakfast small lunch and small dinner" You know what i`m gonna do I`m going to eat home cooked meals continue walking on a daily basis and if I`m still fat then who gives a *hit!!

I agree about the real woman statement. But you have to agree that it`s nice to see something other than pure perfection body wise. Women are not size 0 6ft tall goddesses! Everyone has imperfections and that doesn`t mean you get to feel superior to them like some of the people on here have been acting. Okay I`m fatter than but that doesn`t make you better than me automatically. If you would look past the shallow you could see a wonderful funny and caring person. Ta-da! Stereotypes would then be lifted.

lol too many contradictions in your posts.

why is it your business to control what people would normally call fat? does everyone have to change their definitions so that you can feel better?

if you are so insecure, and "think about it all day", then you obviously are embarassed and ashamed.
Its not that hard to lose weight i used to be overweight but took initiative and turned most of that fat into muscle.
You dont deserve our sympathy for becoming what you are its your own fault, think about those who have no choice in what they can be, people with actual anorexia who cannot down a meal or people in developing countries who cannot afford a m

Actually Lexivanity studies show that genetics are favoring shorter heavier women. Being big doesn`t necessarily mean unhealthy. It`s unfortunate that the ideologies in magazines tend to put forth a truly unhealthy image of women, that for most beyond adolescence is unobtainable. It`s also odd to me that the girls are the ones being particularily nasty and ignorant here.

"these are what we call real women."

So are supermodels, average women with big boobs, average women with no boobs, fat women with no boobs, etc...

Just because you like a curvaceous woman doesn`t make skinny girls "less" womanly then others. I do admit these are pretty airbrushed pictures that do make it less revolting than most fatties.

its not so easy to lose weight but it will never be impossible...too many give up, reward themselves, or cheat but you`re only failing yourself
ive been underweight my entire life and have tried to change so many times so while im on the opposite end of the spectrum i do understand the overweight struggle
problem is i never let myself dip below a certain weight because i didnt need a doctor or a magazine to tell me its unhealthy, its common sense...more people needed to be mindful of this before they let their body get out of control

Wow, I`ve read through the comments, and while I don`t want to enter the "debate", I`ll insert my two cents.

Fat women are not ugly. Skinny women are not ugly. You cannot classify whether someone is ugly or not simply by one characteristic alone. You can`t say "all brunettes are ugly!", just like you can`t say that about weight alone.

I do disagree with the idea that women with more meat on their bones are more womanly. I find that insulting, actually. I do not believe any weight is the "right" weight. I know a girl who simply has a larger frame, but she is the poster child for staying active and eating right. While being overweight is usually unhealthy, it cannot always be blamed on the person alone- while their lifestyle plays a large part in it, the simple fact that you can`t choose what you look like is also a factor.

Look Im not agreeing that these women are disgusting but we have a warped view of what "Healthy" is. Over weight is not healthy. We are meant to be active and though not everyone will be a size 2, 4 , or 6 its important to keep your weight down. I just dont agree with these campaigns that celebrate unhealthy lifestyles as though its normal...

LexiVanity spewed "It`s not normal or healthy for a women to be this size."

The fact is, little miss LexiVanity, a lot of women struggle with weight and body image. Whether it is under, over, normal, etc. I pity you because you are one of the unfortunate victims of the fashion magazines` war on mental health. The only reason they set forth examples of perfectly groomed, flawless, PHOTOSHOPPED women is to SHAME you in to buying products you really don`t need. They are in it for the MONEY. If you read the articles in them, you will discover they are written by people who belong in a role in Idiocracy. Honestly, you really need to focus on yourself and what is good for LexiVanity and not worry so much about other people. If you don`t like something, suck it up and go on with your life. *sigh*
I have been overweight since I was 4.
    I am 41.
I am 268lbs right now (it goes up and down).
I model for BBW (it`s a fashion line).
    I am also a nurse.
I am a brown belt (started training when I was 6)
I have perfect blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, heart.
    I can out-walk, out-hike, out-fight, out-shoot, out-ride, most of my `skinny` friends.
I don`t really care if people like heavy men/women or not.

I don`t really care if people like thin men/women or not.

Everyone has their opinions and likes/dislikes.

I *DO* care when people start insulting us fat folk.

I *DO* care when people start blaiming us for all the health care problems.

I *DO* care when people start thinking us fat people aren`t worth any dang thing because we`re *fat*.

I am overweight. I ***LIKE*** the way I look, feel, am.

I ***LIKE*** the person that I grew up to be. Not many people can say that honestly.

I am a fat woman. Hear me roar ^_^

Alright, I have no opinion on whether they are pretty or ugly. All dependent on someone`s own opinion.
I`m glad that magazine are starting to incorporate real women in their magazine as opposed to the distorted "ideal" but I just wish they didn`t do it as a stunt. Instead of yelling and preaching about how curvy women exist, why don`t they include them in regular fashion campaigns with the other models? Show us that women really do come in all shapes and sizes, and they are still beautiful. I don`t think these editorials are really enough to combat all the other images we are forced to live with

RoniC, you are exactly like my sister. Well, other than the fact that she isn`t a nurse and she`s 39. She`s also a plus size model, has been overweight her entire life (since childhood) and is still one of the most fit people I know. She also has more self confidence than anyone I`ve ever met (although being gorgeous probably helps :D ). But even granting all that, there are health risks to being overweight. They don`t manifest in everyone, of course, but they are there.

I`m glad Maddog made that comment about Lexi`s post.

    to all of you who are saying extremely rude things about the lovely plump ladies, get over yourselves, because if youre skinny and making fun of overweight people, you have low self esteem, no life, and probably don`t look as good as those models do. (;

Grumpdock - I was teased all through school because of my weight an because I had the worst cyctic acne >_< So I know how you feel :(

The best thing I can say is that it does change some once your out of High School.

People (for the most part) are more grown up and don`t always judge you by how you look.

Hang in there. It will get better. And never let ANYONE determine your self worth but you.

besides: i have no doubt that my teenage metabolism will slow down when i have kids, and gain weight.
it doesn`t scare / bother / worry me. big ladies are beautiful too!

my friend anna is a larger girl. she dances very beautifully, is editor(one of them) of our yearbook, and is one of the pretties girls I know.

That is absolutely true. For any size a person is.

Beening heavy is just something that you need to be aware of when it comes to your health.

The same as if you have the genetic markers for other conditions (fat or thin).

It`s always good to be aware of your health and get yearly check-ups (more if your Doc says, of course ^_~)

can we PLEASE stop bagging on the supposed "skinny people" that are apparently the only ones "making fun" of the plus size models?
I`m thin. i don`t make fun of anyone`s weight. it`s in MY DNA to be thin, my moms thin, dads thin, whole family who`s under 50 years old is thin. i can`t help it.
saying that skinny people are making fun of the models because we have no lives or whatever etc is not fair because not all skinny people are stuck up. i know MANY other people who are overweight and make fun of other overweight people!
so can we please just get mad at the people on here who are making such bad comments, and not just assume they`re skinny or group all thin people into one giant bad stereotype??

Well yes, RoniC, that`s entirely true. But what I guess I`m getting at here is... people should generally eat well, exercise, and generally take good care of themselves. And if doing that still leaves you overweight (as it absolutely does for some people), then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and then you should just embrace who you are and what you look like.

Biologically speaking: overweight/fat/obese people are not beautiful or desiarble. so it is a completely natural reaction to feel put off when you see someone more overweight than is healthy. For everyone that is ganging up/calling out the ones who dislike it you`re guilty of the same crime you accuse them of: not being accepting of everyone.

Tangello: I agree, there are a ton of obese people (mainly female) that will make fun of a) other overweight people and b) of skinny people (again mainly female) Why? to improve their self esteem.

Moefreak: I agree about the health issues.

Most guys (correct me if I`m wrong here guys, its just MHO) prefer `real` dimensioned women to waifs. Certainly, I have accidentally hurt a couple of women in my life during coupling and know I`d rather have one with a few muscles and a bit of bulk behind her, who is capable of frenzied lovemaking without screaming "you`re breaking my leg" at exactly the wrong moment.

What the hell is wrong with you, people? These women are not overweight. They are perfectly healthy. The thing is you have been lead to believe only super skinny, muscular women are healthy. Well, surprise: fat is good for women in a certain amount since it is from fat where hormones are made of. No fat=no female hormones. If you like teenage boys fine, that`s your thing, but women are not supposed to look like teenage boys.
Yes, some skinny women are like that and they are healthy. Indeed. Some have small breasts or narrow hips. Yes. But they still look like women because they are healthy. Anorexic women are NOT healthy.
And yes, too much overwheight is bad for your health. We all know that. But 10 kg is not overweight, it is actually better than to be 10 kg below of your recomended weight.
NOW: step out of that idiocy the media has fed you. Healthy, beautiful women come in many sizes. Not just size 0.

I was about 20lbs over due to the holidays, my agent wasn`t upset, but she basically reminded me I won`t work in London/Paris/Milan this FW if I don`t lose the weight. She was nice about it.

I like that these women are rising above the stereotype of what they -should- look like, and are showing what women usually -do- look like. But, as I commented before, I don`t like how they`re selling the idea that "it`s okay to be fat"...because it`s about as "okay" to be fat as it is okay to be an anorexic twig.

What you find attractive isn`t a matter of choice. It`s all driven by evolution and the desire for good genes. So, if you don`t find overweight people attractive it doesn`t make you a bad person. If you like overweight people, it doesn`t mean anything either except that maybe your family came from a cold climate or other area where a little extra weight might come in handy.

RoniC, what I meant by "fat" is women who are unhealthily large or obese. These women are not fat by that interpretation, and I never said they were. It`s okay to be plus-sized, but it is not okay to be so large that your health is at risk. Yet, that`s exactly the opposite of what this magazine is appealing to; they are appealing to women who do fall into the category of obese, and that is what I do not agree with.

For whoever it was who asked me for a source. I cite the National Academy of Sciences and their study of birthrates. Shorter, heavier women have more children, for the very reason we have always known. Them great big child bearin hips! For anyone judging these women as unhealthy, unless you are a doctor or nurse and have done a full physical assessment of these ladies, there is no way you could possibly know.

npdarren - I`m 41 and 268lbs. Most would consider `me` to be grossly overweight.

They tell this just by looking at me.

Never mind that I`m very, very active, healthy, vivacious and an `on the go` type person.

You can not tell what someones health is just by looking. You can`t.

If someone is overweight and that is affecting their health, then, by all means, they should see a doctor and loose weight if the doctor says it`s for the best.

V Magazine is not appealing to the `unhealthy overweight` crowd.

It`s appealing to the overweight period.

Just the same as any body building mag is not appealing just to the steroid useing crowd but to anyone who wishes to body build.

npdarren how can you possibly deduce that this would appeal to obese women? As a woman who has had major body issues over the years, I know that when I was 130 and my bf at the time told me I could loose 30lbs. I believed I was fat. In retrospect I was tiny. Muscular little german girl. I can identify with these women as I am now which is not ideal, but not unhealthy or impedeing my life in anyway.

I Love Plus Size Models. More so than the Skinny tramps of mainstream today.

What a prick. So Everyone gets uppity when someone says something derogatory about larger women but slating skinny women is fine..? I hate small minded people like you.. I agree with anyone who is writing that it doesn`t MATTER if you are fat or skinny etc as long as you are HAPPY and HEALTHY.. which means not starving yourself to death but also not being so fat you are in danger of dying. Get a grip. Moron.

I LOVE the idea of putting larger women on covers. I`ve been down the anorexia road, as has my cousin. Everything in this western world DEMANDS us women be tall, thin and gorgous sex goddess` but in reality a lot of us aren`t.

I wish it was back a few hundred years when larger women were revered :(

No, it`s not fine. NO ONE should EVER be ridiculed because of their physical appearance.

Every woman in every lingerie magazine ever is photoshopped to hell and back, these women are no exception. Real girls this fat don`t actually look this good.

Totally agree, the skin on their bodies looks perfect, particularly the legs, cellulite is a common problem for women 1/5 of their size and they actually look rather toned considering. And as for people going on, you cannot be over weight and healthy, it doesn`t matter if you are actually energetic and right now your organs are fine, carrying excess fat to extreme proportions will put pressure on them.

Pfft, you people are way too soft.

Of course we should make fun of people. I know a fat guy who is applying to the University of Massachusetts. We think its perfect that he is going to uMASS.

Another guy in school is hispanic but he looks really really white. We call him a WASP. He applied to Georgia Tech, their mascot is the Yellow Jackets. We always say that he is going back to the Hive.

I have dark skin. People have told me I`m so black I speak coffee.

Anything to the `extreme` isn`t good. And as one gets older, the follies of your actions and genetics will always catch up to you no matter how good a care you take of yourself.

Sherbetfizz, I don`t disagree that obesity can be accompanied by health risks, but ultimately it alone cannot determine health. True, morbid obesity can be obviously detrimental, in the cases of visible mal-effects on joints and breathing, but what a lot of people see as obese and "unhealthy" are body types that are not at risk. Just as someone who is fat can have diabetes, heart disease, arterial blockages ect ect, so too can a skinny person. Source - myself. I`m a student nurse

This is called beeing rude, dear.

Just because you don`t care about what someone else says about you, doesn`t mean that no one else minds or should mind.

It`s not tolerance to say, "How dare you get upset when I insult you."

    That`s call insensitivity.

If you don`t care if someone insults you, that`s your choice, but please don`t inflict your choice on others.

My sister-in-law would be considered "plus-size" and she is possibly the most energetic person I know. Not that she`s perky or jolly, but she raises two kids (with help from my brother, of course) and works a full-time job, plus all the kid`s activites. I get tired just watching her and I`d be considered in shape. Also, unless she does it in secret somewhere, she doesn`t over eat either, she`s just naturally a little bigger.

Woah don`t get me wrong I NEVER said that it`s only obese people who suffer from illness, of course any extreme is bad that was my point. Look in the real world weight is an issue when you are at extremes, I`m 16 but I can pick up a magazine and know that these women have been airbrushed, are constantly working out, have probably had surgery and everything else that goes into it. Everyone has body issues but promoting ill heath is not the right way to help other women. I`m pretty sure that my words will get twisted as though I`m saying that anyone slightly overweight should die, but fact is nations are getting fatter and its not healthy.

Sherbertfizz... you misunderstood me. What I said was, you cannot in any way shape or form know if these women are unhealthy, therefor it promotes no lifestyle, just an image. You`re absolutely right. Airbrushed to unobtainable gloss. But at least it`s the beginning of offering vareity and dimension to what we deem beautiful.

Wow. What a day. What an emotional rollercoaster. This is a pretty hot topic for me since I am "plus-sized".

What had really got me was that when I had put in my first couple of comments positive things about how I felt about my self-image, I felt like I was being torn down for feeling good, and now I don`t know what to feel.

I mean, yeah, it shouldn`t matter what someone says if you`re never gonna see them again, but it makes me think about how people actually view me.

I`m very driven by feedback. I`m not entitled to it, but I still want to know. When I write a story, I want reviews. When I address someone, I want a response. Etc, etc, etc.

And if I don`t get positive feedback, I don`t feel like it`s worth it anymore. :(

Mweebles. Kudos on your honesty. None of us are perfect. It`s no use trying to be, we`ve heard it all before. It`s a vicous world. We all just need to chill with the judging and offer tolerance, because we would all feel a little better.

alright i`ve read a good amount of comments and decided i`d jump in on this now.

people need to quit being so freaking sensitive. if someone says that they don`t prefer heavier girls, then deal with it.

i myself do not like heavy girls. i`m a thin/muscular guy and i can`t help that i`m not overweight. i eat healthy (out of habit) and work out regularly. so if i want to say that i don`t think those women are attrative, then i`m going to say that. deal with it

People should, collectively, be nicer. Or not be so sensitive. I`m by no means skinny, but I`m smaller than all of these girls. I still get called fat by people thinner than I, and more playful things like "skinny bitch" by people larger than me. If I shed some tears every time either type of comment came my way, I`d drown pretty quickly.

And, for the record, fat people so do not get made fun of more than thin people. My youngest sister/best friend is constantly being sought out and verbally attacked by fat asses. "You should try eating","Anorexia isn`t healthy","Have you ever heard of food?", etc. You should hear the catcalls in the hallways between classes, or going to the grocery store to buy groceries because, hey, she does eat. All those "skinny bitches" in the magazines do nothing to make her feel better about herself afterwards. It`s not like being thin makes you magically immune to insults...

yeah, they`re pretty girls.....but that`s why they`ve been chosen to be models.

there are as many ugly fat women as there are ugly thin ones..... and there`ll always be ones from both that have a go at ones from the other.

it`s like fat people that go on about `having personality" like it`s really only fat people that have the monopoly on having a personality..... and bemoan the fact they get the piss taken out of them.... and then go on to have a go at `skinny bitches`; completely failing to realise they`re doing the exact same thing they don`t like being done to them - judging someone based on their physical characteristics.

The fact is there are pretty girls who are of a larger build....and there are ugly ones too. Same goes for people that are slim... there are ugly ones, and there are pretty ones.

in my book looks do count for something... but only half of it.... attitude counts for the other half.

There are so many different kinds of beauty, but I don`t think people are really getting the point, personally.
Glorifying models, regardless of their size, is still pressuring so many women into believing they have to be a certain way. Yes, plus sized models are now becoming more accepted and there may be, with time, less emphasis on size...but the face, the features and bone structures. Flawless skin, and full lips.
An image of "perfection" is still there.

Other than that, the pictures are beautiful, and they`re all so gorgeous.

    Not for me..

Women AND men both have only two things going on for them: Personality and looks. If you find someone with a great personality but doesn`t look so great, or vice versa, your only getting 50% of what you want and unhappiness is absolutely imminent. So I guess what I`m saying is be picky, and be happy. I`d personally rather poke the skeletons ;)

Double zero girlfriends aren`t anywhere near as much fun to hug (or other things). Plus with a more robust girl you tend not to get the attitude that comes with the skinny wannabe types (win/win no?).

Here`s a DIY for an instant partner for the bigger lovers (no pun) out there. Get 6 balloons, a lot of butter and a lot of cottage cheese. Fill 2 balloons with cottage cheese (legs) and the rest with butter (head, torso, arms) Tie together and Voila! Instapal. Skinny girls are gorgeous, don`t knock em until you try em

The problem is, in the 1940ies and 50ies, those people where some of the fattest around. The fact that you don`t concider them overweight or fat just goes to show the lengh of the problem.

First of all I would not be surprised if these were skinny chicks that got photo shopped and second, I dunno if it`s wise to promote unhealthy weight. I know some people are just big, and they`re healthy and that`s fine; but a lot of plus size people are unhealthy. Showing unhealthy plus size people in magazines is just as bad as showing anorexic people. I know there`s this whole self-esteem thing going on, love yourself no matter how high your cholesterol is! But, what some people aren`t aware of is that size doesn`t necessarily reflect health, and that telling people it`s okay to be overweight even though it can be dangerous isn`t exactly a great idea. I don`t like anorexic chicks for the same reason I don`t like overweight chicks, it`s unhealthy as hell.

Those are OVERwight women. OVER, Meaning they have MORE weight than they need. They`re not going to die from it or have serious health problems I guess, since they`re not morbidly obese, but they`re not normal-weighted either. Also, they`re not TRUE women, true woman are people with XX chromosomes and/or people with feminine psyche that consider themselves women. THOSE are true women.

These girls have much more fat on them than they need. A human body is not programmed to be like a seal`s - you DON`T need such a big layer of fat unless you leave in a -25 °C environment. That`s not how nature conceived us to be. So that is /not/ "how a woman is meant to be!!" Nope. Not at all. You may like them, and it`s fine - but you can`t say it`s the way all women are MEANT to be.

Well hm. I don`t find them attractive, but luckily for them there are men who do. I`m happy for you girls.

    Why are people "anti-skinny" now?

Last I checked, being overweight is unhealthy. And while so many people blame it on health, and genetics, which DOES happen, not every single overweight person "can`t help it". Doctors recommend keeping healthy and eating good diets, and are not telling you "go out and eat a Twinkie! Being overweight is HEALTHY!"

And these women ARE plus size. Plus size does not begin at 700 pounds and over. Just because more women are taking on the overweight look, so they are considered a more average weight, does not mean that they are what could be considered "barely plus size"

I don`t get why people think it`s okay to insult skinny girls, because we haven`t had to "suffer for our weight".

Obese isn`t sexy, no, but these woman aren`t obese by any stretch of the word. The only reason they are even classed as overweight nowadays is because we are made to believe the skinny girls in the magazines and on telly are normal and average.

Hmm, whilst I don`t agree with modelling being dominated by characterless stick insects, from an aesthetic point of view you need to be careful how Plus they get. You don`t look in prettyness mags to see chunky thighs and tummy rolls. At the end of the day though, if you look good you look good, dress size irrelevant.

Average looking people aren`t more attractive, studies havent shown that at all. Studies have shown that relationships work better when people are in the same attractiveness bracket as their partner. So fatties and uggo`s stick together, unless one of them wins the lottery and gets themself a hoe. Being fat used to be nice when we were eating rations and hunting in swamps for rats. But there`s no need to stuff your pie hole with twinkies unless you live in a third world country and have no food, in which case sell your computer and go buy a big-mac. No-one came out of auschwitz a porker, stop trying to make out like skinny is evil and fat is normal and go get on a treadmill.

The reason obesity is so prevalent is that people like you think this is healthy and normal. It isn`t. Everyone in the top picture would be better off with at least ten less pounds.

Mmmm Crystal Renn... Her legs are fantastic <3

Wasn`t the other part of this article her, and a typical skinny model, wearing the same clothes and in similar poses? It was to show that clothes could be sold on any type of body, not just a stick.

Anyways, I love seeing different sizes of women in magazines. Some of us, despite eating incredibly healthy and exercising frequently, have a set point and we`ll NEVER be skinny. But why would we want to? It`s time to accept all body types- even skinny girls. I mean, that`s natural for some people too :)

Though, personally, I love curves. And that little fold of skin in the second pic when she`s arching her back? Totally sexy! <33

On another note, I hate what the term "curvy" seems to imply nowadays. Overweight is not curvy- Having hips, boobs and ass is curvy.

Says who? You have no idea what their diet and exercise regimes are like. Maybe that`s the way THEIR body is supposed to look. Just because some people happen to be thin naturally, and others bust their asses to look that way, doesn`t mean it`s the healthy ideal for everyone.

Women come in all shapes and sizes. They`re all sexy. Show them all. No, it shouldn`t be all plus-sized models. No, it shouldn`t be all twiggy girls. It should be a healthy mix.

    As for the above... Hott!

They are all hot in their own way. Everyone is beautiful in their own way <3

    Elle has a point.

And everyone needs to quit worrying about what others think of them. You were born with this body. Be proud of it and use it in every way you can. Don`t be afraid of it or what other people think of it. ITS THE GREATEST INSTRUMENT YOU`LL EVER OWN!!!

like I said before, you can`t judge someone`s health based on the size of their body alone. Morbid obesity does have obvious health detriments true, but these women are perfectly healthy for all you know. I am student nurse so I`ve seen healthy women who look like this. obesity is not the problem. Improper nutrition and inactivity are. This move at least shows that there is room for more variety in what we see as beautiful.

So I`ve looked back through the comments and with the exception of a few most of the criticism is coming from the teen range of women. Which is not surpising considering that`s where the typical ad is aimed at. You girls are petite now, and no disrespect to opie and any other slender ladies out there who have maintained the look, is probably only going to last youa few more years. Weight catches up with most women at some point, especially after childbirth. I work in a very physical job, and most of the women still look more like this, then like a typical model. Point being, it`s ok. Just be healthy. You can be a healhty bigger person or a skinny person it`s possible. going to extremes is never a good idea, but these ladies are hardly extreme. Teen girls, just remember you`re still growing, probably in some ways untill your at least 20. My boobs just got bigger this last year and I`m 23. Chill you`ll all be beautiful if your kind.

Our group education level has risen to the point where people can rationalize anything.
Unfortunately our discipline level has not also risen.
4 times a week for 20 minutes each session, if you are too busy for that, change your life.

Being overweight WILL stress your heart, liver, kidneys and possibly lead to diabetes. These factors WILL lead to earlier death and lowered quality of life.

You can order your tombstone now (no no not the pizza!!) it can say "I Accepted who I was, and now I am dead!"

This is like having a pipe break in your house, flooding it with water and saying "It is natural for many mammals to live ankle deep in water, plus it adds some nice humidity to the place!"

Stop eating so much garbage, exercise regularly and learn what it feels like to have a healthy body!!!!

Shows how gross the fashion industry is that they think this is plus sized. Apparently to them what normal women look like is plus sized, because they`re not toothpicks. There`s only one maybe two there I`d consider plus sized.

I think this is wonderful. The whole "Size 0" issue can be hard on everyone, not just those who the bigwigs in fashion and media would deem "plus-sized". I`ve always been a twig but that just means that people are forever telling me to eat something or get some meat on me. I`m perfectly healthy and don`t have any eating disorders so it can really get me down. These women in the pictures are beautiful and we should all stop looking at the shape of someone and simply see their pure beauty :)

Child birth does not add fat, I can show you pictures of several women who look great during and after pregnancy. Overeating during pregnancy leads to being overweight after pregnancy.

The comments about age somehow mysteriously adding to your weight as if you were not in control of your diet and exercise is disingenuous.

Our metabolism does slow down (much faster if you do not exercise) as we age, but if you are working out and remaining trim you will never see the slow down.

I think people want a system of beliefs that allow them to feel good with doing something that is bad for them, namely eating crap and never moving their a$$.

    Keep moving!

Just because being fat is normal in the US and UK.

Just because size 16 is the average size in US and UK.

    It doesn`t make it ok.

Just because someone is normally because they are podgy, it doesn`t mean that is fine.

Hello Heart Disease, Joint Pain, Organ Failure.

You name it, obesity probably adds/leads to it.

J prat 2003, actually everything you described can happen to skinny people as well, in fact it`s more dangerous to skinny people because you`ll never know it`s happening until it`s too late, the nice thing about being bigger is that you can actually get an early warning. Now granted we probably shouldn`t be sitting here saying that it`s ok to be bigger, but at the same time, would you rather we ostracize them? Perhaps insult them to the point where they get depressed enough to continue over eating and gain more weight? Look at it this way, at least their confident in themselves which even a lot of skinny people can`t say, so back off, it isn`t about the health problems they could incur as part of their lifestyle, it`s about how they can still be sexy and be that size, it`s a lot better then them trying to squeeze into something that doesn`t fit... or would you rather they be wearing string bikinis and walking around the beaches and pools? hmm? lol

There has been some crap spouted on this, but that is the most ridiculous thing I`ve heard.

Of course it can happen to everyone, but the risk is so much higher for those overweight. So much higher it`s insane.

I wasn`t talking about anyone being "sexy" or confident, however confident or sexy a fat person is, they are still at risk from the health aspects.

You know what I`d really like to see? Not size 0`s and not these women... About uk size 10, 12 and 14 now that would be awesome. Why? Because those of us in that size bracket are average sized real women who are not endangering our health to either extreme. These women are beautiful and so are some of the thin ones but why does it all have to be extremes?

J prat 2003, It`s actually true, see the problem is that you don`t gather fat in the same way that others do, instead of showing it, it will form around your organs and never give you any kind of warning sign, it isn`t info, it is documented evidence of it. Go do some more research and you`ll see.

Everyone has their own opinion. If you don`t find me attractive because of my size. That`s your choice. Just like some people prefer blonde hair. If you want a guy to like you because you`re skinny then lose weight. If you want a guy to like who you are right now, then be yourself and the right person will come along. Don`t think that everyone is so shallow. not everyone judges by looks alone. :)

Stardagger you are one of the most ignorant people I have ever come across. What you have said is general and has nothing to do with these women. What is overweight? Studies have shown BMI is bull, in fact it has recently been discovered that people on the higher end of their "appropriate" BMI ranking tend to live longer. Size has nothing to do with health. It`s what is on the inside. So unless you are talking about morbidly obese individuals where you can physically see the adverse affects you are just plain wrong in trying to pinpoint anyone for being unhealthy.

I love these pictures, they`re beautiful. Now look, I`m overweight I said it! In fact, according to the bullpoo BMI scale, I am "obese", but I most certainly don`t look like it. I look like I`m 180 and I`m mostly muscle. I could pass for a chick in the military any day. Oh, and guess what. I DON`T EAT BUCKETS OF FRIED CHICKEN! Hell, I don`t really like fried chicken at all. I eat pretty healthy and my portions are very low. Just because someone is "fat", doesn`t mean that they just sit on their asses all day and stuff their faces. It`s ignorant poo like that pisses me off. Oh, and I agree with bumbleBB, every little thing she said.

So will being UNDERWEIGHT.. which most models are these days...

As i said before im not into dissing anyone.. everyone is what they are.. ect.

But ALOT of the models in the mags these days are well and truly UNDERWEIGHT.. im not say eat and be huge.. but at least eat... show a HEALTHY body.. being able to show off your ribs for most women is not a healthy thing.. Bones are actually ment to be covered by a small layer of fat and also muscle (sp)..

Most models are to thin and therfore do NOT depict a REAL healthy image... how about we ONLY show women who are HEALTHY.. in whatever weight range they may be... eat well, be able to run around after your kids (ect) show some exersize habits.... and the likes of that.

girls who are underweight - size 0 territory - are at a much higher risk from osteoporosis. Girls with more body fat grow bigger and stronger bones.

These girls are therefore not fat. They are simply big boned. And they are also fairly hot, but i suspect that`s down to amount of work gone into the shots after they were taken.

If it weren`t for good old photoshop, these images would look like planets colliding. Or badly parked VW beetles.

Okay, this may seem harsh, but it has to be said.

These women have beautiful faces, hair, and maybe great personalities, but that weight isn`t healthy. It isn`t. Being overweight, obese, underweight -- it has long term damaging effects on your body. These women are beautiful now, but what about when they`re 50? You can tell how well someone has taken care of themselves once the elasticity and energy of youth fade.

For all those overweight people here, I understand that there`s a genetic predisposition or medical condition, but that`s not an excuse. I have ADHD, my friend has dyslexia, and another is bipolar. We all have to work twice as hard -- if not harder -- to overcome our mental disabilities. Sure, our university is required to make accommodations for us, but if we don`t do the work, we fail. If we make excuses our entire lives rather than overcome our problems, then we must settle for something less.

So if you`re not willing to overcome your weight, then stop whining about

First and foremost, these girls are not FAT... fat hangs in disgusting stretch marked rolls. Second, id venture to say that most of these girls are between size 12 and 16... To illustrate the change in society`s views of women and weight. Marylin Monroe was a size 16 and considered THE hottest female of her time. It was the 70`s that started changing the way we think about women. 40 years later guys thing these petite size 4 girls with A-cup tits are "teh hawtness". I like girls like this, my wife is a size 12 and im very attracted to her. seems to me the only reason guys like girls that smaller and smaller is cause it makes their penises look bigger...

    @itsallfake

Marilyn Monroe was in no way a size 16, and if she was ever described as such, you have to take into acount that the sizing in that time period was very different.

here are Marilyn Monroe`s measurements from the official website, http://www.marilynmonroe.com/about/facts...

    Height: 5 feet 5 1/2 inches
    Weight: Varied, 115 - 120 lbs.
    Measurements: 37-23-36 (Studio`s Claim); 35-22-35 (Dressmaker`s Claim)

now, those are fairly close to my measurements, and i am a size 4.

there is no denying that these women are beautiful, but the point is to be a healthy weight. I wonder why we cant advertise that? instead of chosing models on the plus or minus side of healthy?
