Is it wrong to enjoy that this rollout hasn`t been a net postive for Apple? At least the general public is begining to see that Apple`s business model keeps a fricken authoritarian boot on its products, ensuring very tight control (at a premium price, no less).

    wait... what?

No free software? The Kernel is free. Yes as in GNU. and as in $$. And there are plenty of other softwares that are open as well.

No installing apps from web? Sure, on the iphone only... so long as you don`t jailbreak it anyway...

No sharing music or books? Well, yeah, you can... (almost) all the music in iTunes is DRM free - and the books just started to exist like this month. BESIDES sharing the copyrighted stuff is illegal anyway... so go protest that to the gov`t.

As far as the remote admin of apps and media? Doubt it... especially not with DRMfree music...

What exactly is going on here? Not saying that apple is the best company ever, but please, at least spread FUD that`s true. A lot of the same could be said for Windows - and it still wouldn`t be 100% accurate.

Can`t really speak against linux on these points though...

I have to say something here about this new iPad. Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that we might soon be paying $500 to $1000 for an iPad that has no "computer like" connections (cd/dvd-rom, usb ports, etc.)

Did anyone also notice that this "notebook replacement" does not give the user internet access through WiFi - you MUST have a wireless phone plan with a data plan.

    "NO FREE SOFTWARE"
All of the applications I have open at the moment are free. (Firefox, Transmission, and iTunes)

    "NO SHARING MUSIC OR BOOKS"
This only applies to stuff bought on iTunes. Who actually buys music from iTunes, anyways?

"NO INSTALLING APPS FROM THE WEB"
Two of the applications I have open, Firefox and Transmission were downloaded straight off the web...

"WE CAN REMOTELY DISABLE YOUR APPS AND MEDIA"
This also only applies to stuff from iTunes. And only for files that are "rented". They don`t hack into your computer or anything; the file just deletes itself.

Also, what kind of a loser has time to stand out there all day with a sign? Someone seems a little bit obsessed...

The iPad uses DRM which does block content that comes from anywhere but the official Apple store.

If it comes from their store, they control it. They can take it away from you whenever they want. It also means you can`t share it with anyone.

Thus, all the claims made in the above sign are true.

I am so sick of the anti-mac arguments, which are still stuck in the 90`s. I can`t believe people still think Mac Mice have only 1 button, it is immediate proof that they have never used one. I can play games on my Mac through bootcamp, very well too. Another myth is the diehard Apple fanboy, sure, they exist, but nowhere near the sheer volume of bitter anti-Apple fanatics.

Also, I don`t think people quite understand what a tablet is. ALL tablets, those being developed, and those released, run on mobile software; know why? Because a full OS on a touchscreen would be awfully impossible to use, because it requires both a mouse, and a keyboard.
People hated iPods at release, people hated iPhone on release, hell, anything that Apple has done for the last 10 years, has been met with powerful opposition. I can`t believe that people are still so short-sighted.

Can you give me a link? Because the device you`re talking about sounds pretty good, seriously, I am not trying to trip you up, I genuinely want to see this.

I had that device when I was a kid.

Here is a newer verison of it: http://reviews.cnet.com/tablet-pcs/acer-...

The screen flips around so you can use it like a tablet, but also has a whole keyboard and mouse. It probably has windows 7 on it now-a-days.

This thing just seems like a joke to me, i`d way rather have my tiny notebook any day. most of the features on the ipad just seem useless. ooh you can read books on it! .. you know what smaller than an ipad that you can read from? a Fking book.

If he wants his crappy PC free softwares, he could open Parallels and run Windows and get them all. While having the awesome Mac OS. On the same computer. With a single click.

I`m assuming the "no installing apps from the web" refers to the app store for the iPhone and iPad (namely iPad, being the big news item). It doesn`t apply to OSX (yet?), but it sets a bad precedent.

wow this is not true. If you jailbreak your apple ipod, you can get free software, download app`s from the web, and you can share stuff if you know how. You can disable apple kill switch. So his sign is not valid :)

Say what you will about Apple computers (I`m not a fan), but their small electronics are outstanding. You can say the iPod (and iPhone) have sold well due to great marketing, but if it was a crappy product, the iPod wouldn`t have outsold the competition for nearly 5 years.

I`ve tried at least 3 different smartphones as a way of keeping myself organized. They were all too difficult to navigate and input info (like tasks and events). I also tried paper planners but nothing ever stuck. I have an iPod touch now and it`s like a breath of fresh air -- I`m finally able to keep track of my life. I don`t have to adapt to the interface; it adapts to me. Apple is the only product on the market that does that and does it *well*.

@obhwfgirl--OH BOY do I agree with you. I adore my iPhone. Ive had it since Christmas and already it helps run my life. I`m usually very disorganized and there seems to be an app for everything I need help with. No problems with anything, so far. This guy can shove his sign up/down somewhere... :P

I just thought he probably made that on a mac.

But i do think apple is overhyped not that it doesent work just doesent do things particuarly better then the competition either. This is from all my non tech savvy mates who own apple products simply because its apple.

I have no problem creative media people who need mac`s etc having them but for your average user buy a laptop be a thousand pound cheaper just because you dont get a apple logo on the back. Same said for alienware comps your spending more for a logo....

    Pui:

    You miss the point.

    1) The old Tablet PCs came out at not $400, but $2000.
    2) The one you linked is triple the weight. Is larger than the "cumbersome" iPad.
    3) It takes up MORE space when you can use the keyboard.
    4) Weight.
    5) The touchscreen resolution is worse. I`d bet an arm its less responsive.
    6) The weight.

Your link will never replace taking a book or paper with you on a plane. That is what the ipad is going for.

You link is every possible example of what the ipad is trying to do, and in every way seems to be succeeding, NOT in replacing computers, but by coming up with a new gadget, that takes the place of old media, and does it better.

You might as well put in a link to your car. I`m sure it has many cool features that the iPad lacks, however doing so is just showing you haven`t really seen the purpose of the thing in the first place.

It`s not the new laptop. It`s the new book.

Basically what I was saying earlier, is that Apple`s big problem is going to be convincing people it is:

    1) Not a small laptop.
    2) Not a large iphone.

Which to be fair, it isn`t.

I still like pen and paper. I can more easily memorize things things while those who constantly mark things on their electronic devices have to "look it up" to verify it`s right. While they sometimes have to wait or download, I remember the movement of my hand and what I wrote, I find my method of recalling info faster. If I need to, I pull out that pre-historic piece of paper. Typing with a stylus doesn`t help me remember what I wrote.

People don`t need gadgets to become "better organized." Organization is learning responsibility and running your own affairs- not your iPhone doing it FOR you. Using a tool to do all that for you (as I have seen some people do), you`re just a monkey pushing a button without thinking.

HP slate does what Apple`s Ipad dose, but better specs wise, also there going to be a lot of pads/slates coming out this year. Apple just happens to be the first big name to market, but not the first to bring their product to market. Apple won`t have a multi-year lead on this thing, like it did with the ipod.

It`s more than "if you don`t like it, don`t buy it". It`s personal freedoms. People need to be made aware when your rights are taken away from you by a company. Many are ignorant of what apple does.

"At least Apple computers don`t die every three years forcing you to continually buy a new one."

I`ve got a PC built twelve years ago running just fine. When companies have to compete, the result is a product with a low price and long life.

An Apple computer is basically $100 more for a sticker of a fruit and a guarantee that a lack of competition results in parts manufactured by the lowest bidder.

"alright get this.. we`re going to take the ipod touch... make it bigger... and change the `o` to an `a`!"
    "that`s it? any improvements?"
"yeah give it a new processor, nothing to fancy though! and uhhhh that`s about it."
"should we give our customers flash support? or the ability to download programs that aren`t from the appstore?"
"hell no! oh and let`s really play this up, let`s say this is basically a gift from god and it will revolutionize the world!"
"but that`s lying! we`re taking advantage of our customer`s ignorance!"
