slayer50515, it`s very clear that you`re still in HS and probably pissed that you have to take chemistry, right?

What America is doing right is precisely what you say it`s doing wrong. Schools teach you multiple disciplines so you`re exposed to many different subjects and ways of thinking.

Honestly, the problem is the anti-intellectualism that`s pervasive in Western culture (mostly America). The idea that "I`ll learn only what I need to know and nothing more."

Nobody says you have to love chemistry or literature or whatever but remember that the smartest people in this world are able to think multi-dimensionally. They welcome the opportunity to see the world in a new way. Life can be much more interesting and even exciting when you understand all the layers of complexity.

Unless your idea of exciting is April 15th -- in which case, I`m very sorry.

"If the person trying to expand your knowledge isn`t even interested enough in learning about something himself/herself, typically kids aren`t going to be interested. It really is quite unfortunate."
Welcome to American schooling.
Are there any other countries out there that require someone who plans to be an accountant to learn about valence electrons? I`m fairly certain they will use that information only a handful of times in their life.

StarDagger, it could be the teachers` fault. When I read 1984 in high school, my teacher taught us about the book by reading CliffsNotes. Not only did she use CliffsNotes, they were wrong. If the person trying to expand your knowledge isn`t even interested enough in learning about something himself/herself, typically kids aren`t going to be interested. It really is quite unfortunate.

Ugh, I hate monitoring.
"If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn`t oppose it"
I believe that even in public, you have the right to "privacy" that is, privacy from the government.
It`s the same thing if you stuck a cop on every street corner to intently watch you as you walked. It`s not the same when regular citizens see you as it is when a camera sees you. Plus there`s "recording" which makes me feel like I`m in the Truman show.

Amazing, this explains alot, the USA just got finished with 8 years of Fascism and kids have no idea who Orwell is!!!

At a time where people have the greatest level of access to information ever, they still fail to turn that into Knowledge.

@ xxPinkxx: George Orwell wrote `1984`, which was a novel about his vision of the future where mankind was constantly being watched by "Big Brother". It`s really not that hard to get. =P

So... your Role Models for life`s wisdom are a Satirist, Someone Who Talks About Poop, and A Guy So Tarded He Flies Kites In Lightning Storms?

That explains a lot.

------------------------------------------------- No they don`t. Watch all the crime shows with surveillance footage of crimes taking place. Those criminals weren`t deterred one bit. You have fallen into the trap that Big Brother wants you to.

Orwell was right. Maybe a bit early with 1984 but right never the less. You can`t say that about many Science Fiction writers.

@Lionhart, It was never actually a futuristic prediction, it just so happened to turn out that way. 1984 was written as an alternate reality, a "what if" kinda deal, and was originally to be published as 1948, the year it was written/published. However, the publishing company decided it would be too confusing for the average reader, so they switched the last two numbers, hence 1984. But yeah, mandatory reading should be enforced. With cameras.

OMFG, people, READ THE DAMN BOOK AGAIN. It should be required reading at least once every 4 or 5 years. Orwell wrote about a future society (1984 - LOLZ) where EVERY citizen was under constant watch 24/7, even the watchers, and history was rewritten every time something happened, so that history was supposedly always that way, until the next time it was changed anyway... frightening stuff with more than a shadow of real 21st century life in it.

"more like a coincidence rather than irony"

No, it is definitely irony. Here`s two examples to help illustrate the difference between irony and a mere coincidence.

Coincidence: A porn star lives on 69th St.
Irony: A porn star lives in the Virgin Islands.

dont get it?

Well George Orwell wrote the book 1984 which is based in a world where everything you do and say is being watched by Big Brother which is some sort of super computer/camera thing.. The sign on George Orwell street says this road is under CCTV or something to that effect so its ironic..
