Behold! The Power Of Physics! [2 Pics]

Submitted by: fancylad 7 years ago in Science

This kid had to prove how water displacement works in practical everyday life. This is pretty practical.

*Next day*
"Hey Billy, why is the sand wet?"
"I dunno. Lets make sandcastles. It works better in wet sand."
"Sandcastles, yaaaay!"

. . . it should have shown a third pic, one where the weight was equal on each side . . . so, I give it a "C" . . . plus, that looks like a public playground, and only cats can do that in the sand!

Females can pee standing up and aim it. Just takes some practice and an occasional rooster of the leg lol.

@ opie - ever heard of "shewee" or "shepee" ???? finally you can be like us men - well that`s if you want to and only in the "standing while peeing"

Reminds me of the old riddle my grandfather used to tell me: if you`re in a perfectly frictionless environment, with no walls whatsoever, how do you move?

Answer: Pee in the opposite of the direction you want to go.

So.... What does this have to do with water displacement again? :P

If you look close at the pics you would notice that in the second image his feet are further from the fulcrum than in the first pic. This would cause an adverse effect on what he is trying to accomplish.
But... Meh IDC still a cool pic.

Naw Crakr...torque can be huge if it`s far enough away from the fulcrum...which he is. So if he spent the time to precisely weigh himself and the bags, that half-pound could make that much difference, especially over time.

`I believe a few lead weights in his pockets (in the first picture) is the likely cause.

A Pint of water equals 1 pound, The human bladder can hold half of that for 1/2 a pound total urine weight. I seriously doubt 8oz. of weight would make such a huge difference`

Be extremely tough to get to work. Not only does the measurements have to be pretty damn precise, but he has to take in to account that the weight difference has to be enough to overcome the friction. Because there`s plenty of it on the fulcrum, you can have a "perfectly balanced" see saw without identical weights.

OK, in retrospect so that theory doesn`t work but at least I tried. I`m heading down the park to experiment.

Precise weights are not too much of an issue as he can easily adjust his distance from the
fulcrum. If you look at the first pic he is nearer to the end of the bar and so his weight creates a greater turning force or moment. In the second pic he has shifted slightly further back thereby allowing the moment on the other side of the pivot to lift his weight.

That said a mighty whizz would still adjust the balance but given that the average daily volume is below a 2 litres and that weighs approximately a 2 kilos (not allowing for salts and sugars in the water expelled) I`d be surprised if a balance like that would react to this change.

all he would have to do is weigh himself about the time he has to go. Fill sand bags to match that weight and take a handfull or so out of a bag for him to be slightly heavier. Then obviously bleed the lizard and ta da he is now lighter than the sand bags

rhinoster: I think the measuring instrument you`re looking for is called a "scale".

would have to have very similar weights for this to work.
Well, even if he was 1 gram above the sandbag, emptying his bladder would have lightened him enough for the sandbag to lift his weight. So no, it looks real to me :)
Yeah, but think of the effort to get juuust the right amount of sand that it would weigh more than you with an empty bladder, but less with a full bladder. It could take hours of fiddling. Which is why I said points for effort either way.
