a few of these are not safe for work. It`s kind ofhard to think of why people would trade lot`s of pain for "beauty"

"Self-harm is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) as a symptom of borderline personality disorder and depressive disorders. Self-harm is often associated with a history of trauma and abuse including emotional abuse, sexual abuse, drug dependence, eating disorders, or mental traits such as low self-esteem or perfectionism. However, a statistical analysis is difficult as many self-harmers conceal their injuries."

Bunch o` cutters is what they is.

I saw one that this lady got on her back and they showed the skin they had taken off. Eep.
God, can you imagine trying to take a shower after getting one of those?!

Nice designs but the big lumpy skin that grows in afterwards is just ugly. I`ll stick with tattoos.

I`m torn, because a lot of these are really amazing, and they`ll look a lot better later in life (I think) but self mutilation seems a little extreme for art.

my friend did this. She cut the pentigram, and the crossed out music symbol on her hips. she will forever be more brutal than anyone haha

Some of these were really really nice, but the idea of that it`s skin being burned off is what makes me cringe.

Nice designs, but they could have been done as tattoos. Lets face it, scarification really is for fu ckwits. It`s not as nice looking as a tattoo, it`s just about the fact that people want you to know they endured the scarification process, and they are generally therefore sad little attention seekers.

That coyote has to much skin coverage imo bad infection risk and the scar wont turn out even it will be all lumpy.

self mutilation at it`s potentially most pointless...you can get tattoos in red or white ink, and they`ll end up looking a lot better. I noticed in a lot of the "healed" pics, there were a ton of uneven bumps or just what was left imitated a really bad sunburn. Plus, I`m guessing the risk of infection for this is just absurdly high.

Theres got to be a reason you hardly ever see the "after" pictures. I bet the scars mess up the pattern more often than not.

The chemical structure is that of Dimethyltryptamine.

I looked it up and it appears to be a naturally-occurring psychedelic in plants and trace amounts in humans.

Helpful hints: Each corner of the diagram is a C atom. When you have 6 C atoms forming a hexagon which then has 3 single lines on the inside between two C atoms, you have an H atom for every C atom. So all you do is count them up: C12H16N2. Easy peasy.

Another example of stupidity.
I correct myself, not-well-thought-out choices.
However creative or unique it may be, it`s still really unreasonable to purposely give yourself a scar that may or may not heal correctly or even be visible at the end of the healing process.
Bleh. To each his own.

Looking at the pics of healed, finished scarification pieces I find on Google and comparing them to equally well-done tattoos all I can say is, "Meh." On some people the healed scars are barely visible, and the designs look very different from when they were freshly done. The sharp, clean lines are blurred and the bright red color has faded to a much lighter pink, if it doesn`t return to the same color as the uncut skin was to begin with.

I guess if you like the look of the fresh cuts and you want it to stay like that, get a tattoo done in red ink instead of black. If you don`t mind that the design you have cut out of your skin can blur somewhat and fade a lot, then maybe you won`t be disappointed with scarification. From what I see on these sites, I can tell it`s not for me.

apparentlhy it`s illegal for any form of local or other form of anesthesia to be used, or any medical type pain killers, and the honest to god reason why is becuase they (the authorities) want the process to be as awful as possible so that people won`t do it.

I have quite a few tattoos and a pretty high pain tolerance and I would never even think of getting one of these, I can only imagine how much it would hurt. The healing process has to be terrible, imagine clothes sticking to it... ugh... terrifying.

alphanoninc, I thought the same thing at first, but this isn`t really a first time go at body modification, so they likely would have discovered that they were prone to keloids when they got a peircing or something. If they didn`t though, they would end up with a nasty warped over growth of tissue.

Number one and three looked to be cadavers, could have been the lighting. I like how they only showed one that was actually scarred over. Probably because scars are not always consistant and most of these turned out looking like hell.

Scarification is really bothersome to me. Besides an extremely high risk for infection, most of the people who practice this technique apply chemicals to the burn or cut after it`s made to encourage the development of a more distinct raised scar. Besides that I`ve weighed the outcome (for myself personally) and I think they look contrived and ugly. They`re not really artistic the way a tattoo can be. They`re more like the stenciled hobo version of tasteful body mod. Though I`m sure they cost a fortune.

Female 291
Scarification can be quite beautiful. All of these are beautiful in their own way. I have thought about getting it done.

@CaaBaaRaa they do not stay red. The red is because they are freshly done. Its blood basically just like if you skin yourself falling down. It heals into a pink scar (if done properly)

I have seen some AMAZING art done through scarification, thing is, its more permanent than a tattoo. So for people who do choose this route, make sure it`s what you want for life.

That first one is nothing but an infection waiting to happen. I know that these can be done safely, but doing that much "damage" to your skin at one time is just too dangerous, I think. Do it a little bit at a time, maybe a week between each session so you don`t end up with scars where the work ended or something.
