Because they beat him? Nope. Because they raped him? Not even close. You"ll never guess why he killed his parents...

re:mcgovern "By that logic people shouldn`t have cars because people die from car accidents or booze because that causes all sorts of violence or Rosie O`donnell spoons because they make her fat"

This = fail. None of the things you mentioned have the sole purpose of causing death. Guns are for shooting, cars are for transporting someone from A to B. Misuse of a car causes death, the correct use of a gun causes death.

2 things,

1. they wern`t blaming video games, they were illustrating his lack of empathy.

2. Anyone who thinks not having a gun would have prevented this is very simple minded. The kid hid in the laundry room with the corpse of his mother in the house wating for his father to come home from work. He didn`t try to hide it, didn`t run away, he wanted to finish the job. So do you really think he would have any reservations stabbing them in their sleep, poisoning them, or burning the house down?

But Guns don`t kill people, right? What would he have done if he didn`t have a gun? try to stab them 47 times each with a fork. that would work, RIGHT?

The kid`s messed up. Going to an adult jail at 14, 98 pounds is a terrible idea, not that I have any other solution. As long as he stays far away from the public.

that sounds like there was significant mental illness involved. perhaps he might be better suited to a state mental health facility than a prison. either way he`d be in confinement for the rest of his life.

I doubt that a little kid sick enough to kill his parents would reconsider because it might be problematic for him to find a weapon, ignoring the fact that shooting someone isn`t the only way to kill them.

I think they`re saying he played video games after, to emphasise the lack of feeling/remorse... not that he played video games and therefore learnt to be violent. Anyhoo yeh I say he`s deranged, hated them already and it was the final straw, something like that. He may be young but they might never `fix` him. Hope he isn`t destined for the death penalty later in life/psych ward rest of his life!

@ 5Cats: If he shot them in their heads, the .22 rounds would not leave the skull. They would ricochet around and make a brain smoothie. Or he got lucky, and pierced the heart or something. The point is though, that it is possible to do significant damage with a .22 bullet.

Jeez IABers are facinated with `anal rape` eh? Like, Deliverance must be their favorite movie, lolz!
Under 18s get handled with "kid gloves" in the system, no pun intended. At least until they`re 18. So no fantasy images for IABers for another 4 years.
idk how he did it with a .22 either. Multiple shots is all I can come up with. So the kid is either criminally insane or mightily abused.
Isn`t the "Dad" a step-father? I got that notion from the clip. More info needed.
3500 murders in UK (says "ask Wiki")
Which provides an excellent example of why you shouldn`t ask Wiki about anything.

The latest real figures I can get without spending more time looking than I want to are:

England&Wales: 648 (2008/2009)
Scotland: 114 (2007/2008)
Northern Ireland: 24 (2008/2009)

Total: 786

I doubt if the figure for Scotland in 2008/2009 is much different to what it was in 2007/2008, so the total for the UK last year will be about 786. Not 3500.

Fair point. Then I will say that a combination of his own inability to think rationally (he`s 14. It is possible, don`t make the `he`s only a kid` argument), and likely a lack of discipline from the parents. It`s 1:15 in the morning here. I apologize for typing without thinking. He still deserves an adult trial though. And the jail time that comes with double murder in what appears to be the 2nd degree.

Mcgovern: No I don`t actually. Just saying, parents would very likely still be alive had they not owned a gun. I do not live in America and I do not know how it works over there.. I just know the chances of me being shot to death over here is much lower than in the states.. I cannot really comment on the topic of guns but there should be if not a gun ban then more control than there is currently.. its ridiculous. The fact that in Texas you can walk around with a gun just blows my mind (no pun intended).. that is just asking for trouble..

@Angelion The gun-murder rate was really low before the ban, so any increase would be big percentage wise. 3500 murders in UK (says "ask Wiki") and only 50 by guns>? Obviously gun control prevents murders, eh?

My figures come from memory of some articles I read a couple of years ago, so don`t write your thesis paper based on them. But that was the conlusion of the writer, that making guns illegal put them into black market trafficing. Mixing guns, drugs and criminals is bound to be a bad thing, yes?

Gun ownership (legal) and Murder rates (2001) :
Canada 36,349 @ 1.78
US 89,116 @ 5.62
Mexico 9,709 @ 13.94
This is a good read

If you can pre-meditate like an adult and kill like an adult, though you obviously have some mental defect, you are able to be sent to live with adults who have the same mindset as you. Might he be "unsafe?" Yeah, probably. But if you can do the crime, you can do the time in the manner everyone else does. It`s not about being "fair."
Actually McGovern1981 gun crimes rise rapidly after guns are banned.
Obviously, as banning guns creates more gun crimes. Possession, for example, becomes illegal.
gun murders doubled since thier banning about 15 years ago.
The number of murders committed using a gun was 49 last year. Do you know the figure for 1994, or are you just making things up?
Why you ask? Because now guns are black market items, so more criminals have them, and thus use them more for crimes.
A convenient answer, but do you have any evidence to support it? I could just as easily pull an opposing answer out of the air - making the use of a gun in a crime a far more serious offence deters criminals from using guns.

Besides, what makes you think people in the UK routinely carried guns for defence before the mid-90s? I assure you that wasn`t the case, not least because doing so had been illegal since the 1920s anyway.

Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns.
Assuming the weapon involved was legally obtained by the parents and IDK how any laws would have prevented this.

Am I wrong tho on the way gun laws work? Like I said, in my state there`s a 7 day waiting period and background check when purchasing a fire arm. Going through legal channels this means criminal history your not getting that gun.

I`m not gonna pretend All my friends are the most law-abiding, but I know people I could speak to and get a gun, if not today, than within the next 3 days.

I have no criminal record, and have no desire to use those contacts, but if someone like me has them, than people who actually take part in the criminal element of society wouldn`t have those connections, why?

I`m just saying, that gun control laws do nothing to prevent the people that use guns maliciously from obtaining them.

@ Calderis,
You said, "Research repeatadly shows that areas with stiffer gun control laws have higher violent crime rates, where areas with very little have lower."

That may be true, but just because there is a link between gun control laws and higher violence rates doesnt mean that we should know which one is causing the other. It may be that because there is a high rate of violent crime in a given area, the area`s government decides to make their gun control laws more strict. Or, for whatever reason, it may be that gun control laws are somehow causing violent crime to occur instead. All I`m saying is the only thing that this research suggests is that there is a "link" between the two.

Elle1987,

Do some serious research. The only way a "Gun ban" would lower crime rates is if you could guarabntee your keeping guns out of the hands of criminals as well. All of the data I`ve looked at is here in the US, but if you look at area`s where gun control laws are more lax, violent crime rates are muhc much lower. This is typically because unlike in area`s where laws are much stricter, a criminal has to consider the possibility that they aren`t the only person with a gun. Most criminals don`t go through legal channels to obtain a firearm tho, because they don`t want the gun to be traceable back to them. If you go through legal channels, and you use a gone that is registered to you for anything other than recreation or self-defense, your screwed.

This is one of the rare cases where gun control laws may have worked... but on the whole gun control laws are a shame. Research repeatadly shows that areas with stiffer gun control laws have higher violent crime rates, where areas with very little have lower.

Gun control laws only keep people who are going about getting a gun legally from getting them. In my state there`s a 7 day waiting period with background check. I guarantee you if I wanted to get a gun for illegal purposes it would take less than 3 days.

Gun control laws just mean the criminals know it`s less likely that you have one.

Tobacco kills far more people than firearms why isn`t that banned? So do cars and poor diet. If someone wants to kill a person they`re many ways to do it without a gun.

Because a gun is a weapon used for the sole purpose of killing. Yes there are many ways to kill someone but it is a lot harder for a 14 year old boy to lift a baseball bat to beat his mother and father to death or stab them to death before being ovedpowered than being shot with a gun. Guns do the most damage and it is sad to think that anyone can own one in a country that tolerates guns.. The proof is in the level of gun crime in America compared to say Europe where it is not so high... because simply, you are more likely to be able to defend yourself against most other weapons.

But guns do make it easier for people to kill. It is a fact that there is more gun crime in places where guns are legal than those that are not. It is a lot easier to kill someone with a gun than a blade or baseball bat.. You have to ask the question: If this child had no access to the gun in the first place would his parents still have died. Guns being legal in some parts of the US make a huge difference..

This is an opinion, there are probably far worse crimes out there, and this is also depending on what people are used to, what they have experienced, and what people`s opinions are about the subject.

The kid is a certified nut case, as evidenced by his behavior after the murders - just going on like business as usual is very, very abnormal - even more so in a kid than an adult.

With that said, I find it hard to believe that he had not shown some piece of this personality at one point or another to his parents. Shoulda got the kid some help before it was too late.

Yay stereotypes, OH the "skinny white kid with glasses" could never do that type of thing right? Fail. And oh of course the video games get brought up again, what a shock! I`m pretty sure I saw a study a few months talking about how violent video games actually have very little effect on violent behavior of kids. Anywho, the death penalty isn`t going to do crap in this case, the kid obviously has mental issues and should get put in a mental institution.

Also, somewhere along the line, his parents ALLOWED him to get the idea that solving your problems by shooting them is okay. Whether directly or via allowing him some games or movies that were inappropriate for his mental level.

And just to tack on about the video game thing, it sounds to me like he`s a sociopath, or at least a budding one. Saying he acted like nothing happened when he played them pretty much confirms it. The games had nothing to do with it, the kid was already messed up. I don`t think they said the argument was over chores instead of playing. It was just chores.

I don`t know. Killing your parents over chores seems like EXACTLY the type of thing that proves that a person IS a child and should be tried as one.

I claim no knowledge of the facts here, and could be wrong.

great my taxes will pay for the rest of this little turd`s life of living and eating. I don`t care how old, he needs to be executed. an eye for an eye. and not 20 years from now. sit him down, explain to him the horrific act he did and start the injection or flip the switch. He will never be the same, always relying on the government for counciling and treatment his whole life. just another waste.

"It was his STEP father. A stepfather is over ONE-HUNDRED TIMES as likely to kill their child as the child`s natural father. So give the kid a break, the step father was probably going to kill him anyway."

And your proof comes from where? It`s a stereotype only enforced by the media.

If you ask me, the kid sounds pretty messed up in the head. Killing his parents, playing video games that night with their bodies IN THE HOUSE, driving to school the next day, then to an Uncle`s? Yeah, he deserves to be tried as an adult. That`s not just teenage angst, there is something clinically wrong with him.

Wow.. talk about nutter... It really annoys me that just because someone is below a certain age they get off lightly as opposed to someone of adult age.. Do an adult crime, get the adult time imo..

You can`t put a 14 year old boy in an adult jail... not one as skinny as him, they`ll throw a wig on him and he`ll never be able to sit down again...

@mandylea, those same people could snap from certain movies, songs, books, comics, and even photos. so, what youre saying is that people who are mentally unstable should not be allowed to do anything. im not agreeing or disagreeing, im just saying that if a videogame could set them off, anything could set them off. this point is unimportant as they didnt blame the videogames and `seyruhgee` is right.

The only way video games will make you have that kind of behavior is if they`re already mentally unstable and/or mentally retarded.

Hmmm, I might say it was a crime of passion, but the time scale`s not really explained. It`s probably not when you`re happy and playing videogames. Analyse him to see if he`s mature, and then blow his head off with a shotgun. No reason not to.

I don`t blame video games for people`s violent actions, but I will say that if you already have some sort of mental instability then playing certain violent video games could definitely send you over the edge. Just the same way that I don`t blame guns being legal for shooting deaths, if a person is messed up enough to want to kill then they`ll find a way to kill guns or no guns.

Whelp, I`ve been playing games all my life. Maybe it`s about time I ate some shrooms and jumped on someones face till they were dead.

Why can`t the just accept he`s not right in the head? At least there was no interviews of people who knew him claiming what a nice boy he was.

F*** yeah it is! It`s $55,000.00 a year here in my state to house an inmate. People like this do not deserve to have $55,000.00 a year spent on them. He may only be 14 years old but that`s well old enough to know right from wrong. It`s just one less psycho to have on this earth overpopulating prisons.

Send him to Texas and have them prosecute him. I don`t want to be paying taxes on some kid that clearly doesn`t know right from wrong. That`s a lot of money wasted when we can just pop him one real quick and throw him away like he did to his own mother.

He PLAYED VIDEO GAMES THAT NIGHT!?
My god. This changes everything!

Actually, it does. You would expect someone who killed their parents to be really sad about it and be at least somewhat upset. This guy played and had fun. That points to some sort of pathology. He seems mentally ill, perhaps doesn`t understand the implications of his actions, and so isn`t competent to be tried. It does, in fact, make all the difference.

Don`t be so quick to blame the parents. Mentally ill 14-year-olds do stuff like that. This article was in my local paper this morning:
14-year-old girl beat her mom to death with a hammer

If you can`t bother to read it, today is the sentencing for a girl who, in 2008 at the age of 14, beat her adoptive mother to death with a hammer. The mother was a schoolteacher and the most wonderful person in the world. Apparently the girl`s biological parents were nutcakes, so she had some biological mental condition that kicked in around the age of 14, despite having the most loving Mom in the world

Move him to an adult facility? He weighs 60lbs wet and holding a large dog! I have a feeling he will be well liked if they do move him.
I wonder what the step-father`s last thoughts were... "Wasn`t one of his chores were to put the guns back in the safe..."

Oh, of COURSE you have to mention the damn video games. He was probably just playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

They also fail to mention what type of upbringing they gave the kid. Where they abusive? Seeing as the kid was ecstatic about being free of them, I would venture to say he was probably abused. But I`m only assuming here.

In addition, how did that kid have access to weapons?

I`m sorry, but part of the blame has to lie with the parents on this one. There had to be warning signs. No person just ups and kills his parents without motivation.

As for punishment? I don`t believe in the death penalty, regardless of crime. He should get life in prison though.

At 14 years old, he was fully aware.
