lol you see things like this all the time. Americans especially. They say things like "I believe there is no god" when the very act of belief to express disbelief is a very anti-atheistic quality.

Just because you are told what something is doesn`t mean that`s what it really is.

Common-knowledge is not proper knowledge do some research you nitwits.

Atheism can be either the rejection of theism, or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities.

The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning "without gods", which was applied with a negative connotation to those thought to reject the gods worshiped

Pasted from Wikipedia - Basically to be considered Athiest you do not have to know anything about the big bang or evolution etc In fact you don`t have to explain anything... By being Athiest basically means you don`t believe in God.. Simple.

Christianity on the other hand - Is a religion and to follow a religion it kinda helps to know what it is you are talking about..

This guys point is moo and void... and yes I will still mock people who claim to be Christian yet I know more about the bible than they do.. its hypocritical. Bla!

    well thats retarded.
Don`t need to know string theory or the big bang theory to be atheist. its enough to be sure there is no such thing as a higher power or a divinity.
Lke for Christians it is enough to just belive in God to be called a christian.

    Your arguement is invalid.

No, because Athiesm isn`t a religion. If you believe there is somesort of deity but your not sure what it is then that would make you agnostic. To be an athiest you need to simply not believe in god.

I do not believe in a god any god whether it allah or jehovah.. i am an Athiest, I am well educated on a dlot of these religions and know a lot about the big bang theory and evolution and the such.. But I don`t need to explain that to anyone because it is not relevant.

And yes, technically you do need a little more than just belief to be considered Christian... But thats the problem, a lot of ignorant people believe you just need to believe and that makes you a Christian... ha.

it`s funny how religion always brings about flame wars.
why are we so adamant to defend or attack different views than our own?
    So, is there a God?
Or are we better evolved more intelligent forms of our carbon ancestors?
Although i am considered stupid and a simpleton, i still choose God-made. Why?
Because the understanding of being created and valued by an eternal being explains to me why i should value my life and live morally. On the contrary, if i view myself as the ultimate product of ooze, then to plant life, then to sea creatures, to baboon, to myself, I can only view myself as an animal and therefore have to reason to live a good life. But what I hate the most about people who hear about it and are shocked are all like "Oh, if you don`t believe in hell, how can you be a good person? Durrr..."
I, fortunately, don`t need to be threatened with eternal suffering to have good morals. I don`t steal or kill because that`s kind of a dick move. So please shut up and move along.

nobody understood the point of this, its not anti-atheist or anti-religion, he`s saying that people who are atheist because they don`t have faith in god while simultaneously NOT knowing why faith in god is silly (ie. not being well informed of the scientific facts that go against various religions.) are people who are being hypocritical because the only two ways you can not believe in god is with scientific knowledge or with faith. Sooo...these people who he targets must have faith that there is no god and therefor have no right to bash the faith of the religious people they often mock.

I`m a theist. It`s just that the god i believe in (No caps - he hates it when i type his name as God) fully admits that (the universe) was all a bad lab experiment and he hasn`t the heart to flush it all down the loo.
In my visions, colin (for that is his name, amen) goes on to explain that he has no control of anything, he`s just a student and can we please not send a spaceship equipped with space folding technology out of the universe, into the lab and tell Professor Nutkins what`s happened.

When did `atheist` become a synonym for `scientist`? I don`t give a crap about science, just like I don`t give a crap about religion. I don`t believe in God, and I don`t need to know string theory in order to do so (or to not do so.. you know). That`s basically saying that by default, unless you are fluent in science, you are a theist. Logic fail.

Goofing aside, John Safran is a comedian. I doubt he`s even making a serious statement, considering he only listed one "intellectual`ish" book (a well known one) and only made a page refrence to its contents. (Thats deep, it had a page 3!)

It`s satire, people. Satire done very poorly, I hasten to add.

Having said that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being religious AND having an understanding/acceptance of science. There`s a lot of muddying of the waters going on between atheism/theism juxtaposed against science/mythology. They are very different speheres. There are many religious scientists (albeit relatively few), just as there are many atheistic mythologists (think conspiracy theorist nutjobs).

I have the same respect for fellow scientists who are religious vs non-religious. None of my business. Same way as a fellow scientist may be a liberal or a conservative. It shouldn`t interfere with their ability to do or to understand science, and as long as it doesn`t, I have no beef.

It`s when I see religious people denouncing science (as they post comments on their laptop computers over the internet) that I get pissed off. THEN I`ll come out guns blazing.

Nothing to see here, move along.

The title of the video wrote a check the video itself couldn`t cash.

Conclusion: Although the premise had some major potential, the video came no where close to even my lowest expectation.

Did the guy in the video just say, that it takes intelligence to be an atheist, thus that you cannot be intelligent and religious? Or just that all religious people are stupid? Damn you IAB! Yet another badly-disguised anti-religion video!

His point is described on the youtube page. A good bit of fair balance, just a bit too personal towards the person watching it. As a lot of athiest videos are.

"@ TrippyHippy You`re supposed to eat you cake, that`s why it`s YOUR cake. :P"

The expression holds true. You can not have a piece of cake in front of you if you have eaten it. "If you want your cake, don`t eat it. If you eat your cake you will no longer have it."

You can`t say the big bang and evolution are true and then follow it up with saying God exists. They are VERY conflicting views. As satirish as video was, it makes sense.

Lol, this is quite true though. Most people who claim they know everything really don`t. Personally, I`m an atheist, and having studied Physics at a higher level, I do understand the Big Bang Theory somewhat; but this guy is right. The Big Bang Theory doesn`t explain everything. The main reason I`m an atheist is that I was never really raised to be religious, I have no reason to be.

Anyway, I quite like this video, it makes a good point, and it`s funny seeing how many of you are getting butthurt because you know it applies to you :D

Actually, the premise of the video is stupid. It presumes that in order to be an atheist, one must understand the Big Bang (as if, in order to not believe in God, one must adhere to, or even understand the Big Bang theory)? I don`t believe in God, therefore, I`m an atheist. Whether or not I believe in the Big Bang is irrelevant to that fact. Does one have to "understand" God in order to be a Christian? And even *that* question is irrelevant because understanding a concept and believing in it are not, in any way, mutually exclusive.

...and, finally, Big Bang does not equal Atheism. One does not have to believe in the Big Bang in order to be an atheist. At all. One could, a) believe that aliens brought all humans here, b) be an atheist, and, c) believe that the Universe started when a giant space worm farted. And those beliefs aren`t at odds with one another. Atheism does not require a "start of the universe" theory at all.

Cute video, though. Keep trying to "get" us atheists, guys. One day you might make a cogent point. Until then, I applaud your efforts.

@spider sol: Actually, it is possible to believe in God, the Big Bang, and Evolution. There is something called deism, which postulates that God created the universe, but then left it to develop as it will.

I`m agnostic, so I don`t really know whether I believe it or not, but it would be very difficult to provide scientific proof against a God who does not actively participate in the universe.

To be fair, atheism is more like colourless. Like water, if you will. A better analogy is more like Atheism is to religion as bald is to hair colour. Or Athieism is to religion as NOT playing chess is a hobby. Those are better analogies.

Or if you prefer, Satanism is black, athiesm is "I-don`t-give-a-f*ck-what-colour-it-is-its-all-f*cking-imaginary". Kinda like that.

Atheism is a lack of belief and doctrine in either god or gods. Ergo, you could argue that because an atheist does not believe in god, they therefore believe in a lack of one, which constitutes as a religion. However, a religion as defined by Webster is: "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith", or "a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices"

As an atheist, when it comes to what is around us and why we`re here, we much less rely on faith and more on the facts we currently have. I don`t have faith that the earth was created by the debris of various heavenly objects condensing under it`s own gravity, before crashing with another planet that eventually became the core of our earth as well as fragmented pieces that became our moon. Faith is an uncertain gamble. As far as it goes, Science has determined with all of the evidence it has gathered, that they is the most logical answer, based on t

the facts that has been presented to it. So, since it is not a blind following because it makes us feel good, and thus not faith, then by definition it cannot be considered a religion. However, I will say that some people are such ardent atheists and so anti-christian that they do hold onto these ideas to the point of not being able to be proven wrong despite the facts being there, and those atheist could be considered religious by their actions

Well, I consider myself atheist, but there`s still this reeeaaally smal piece of me who says: "well, there`s always the veeeeeery small chance of there being a god.."
But really even if there was a god, (let`s take the christian god for example) I just wouldn`t want to go to heaven. I mean, he`s an awful person: if you`re gay -> hell, if you do something he doesn`t want -> hell, if you have another religion -> hell.
I`d think he is just a real A-hole, and say "fudge you! i`ll do what i want."

    @Nutimik
well, that`s because you think of God as they told you. if you think it, if there is a God, there is no way anyone has ever talked to him, or her, or it, the point is, the bilbe and every other book like the qu`ran were written by humans, who said they were guided by God, so if I write a rule that says you must wear make up every day or you`ll go to hell, because God told me so, in a few years people would believe me and do it.
I am no atheist, but I respect real atheists.
I do believe that it is stupid to believe in something someone told you, but it is equally stupid not to believe because someone told you to believe.
anyway to believe or not to believe is something you must think alone, you must see if you can conceive the idea of a God, and if you do/don`t live with that and don`t try to make others think what you think.
