Why You So Racist, Hewitt-Packard? [Vid]

Submitted by: Matwix_2004 7 years ago in Funny

The face tracking feature of the Hewitt-Packard web cam will not recognize or track black faces. Engineering fail.

how do we know they didn`t just move the camera to follow the chick`s face and left it still when the guy was there? It never actually showed this equipment did it? isn`t it possible they just used a regular like, camcorder or something?

wow, i heard about this in the news and i think that its so stupid that almost everybody (mainly most black people) ***NOT ALL so dont be all "OMG you are a racist"*** think that everything is racist. HP is not racist its the camera, it cant pick up certain distinctions on a black person, so what? are yall gonna say that cameras are racist? come one people, have a little more since than that...besides, if this facial recognition solfware only recongized black people, they would bitch and complain that it is racist too becuz they would start useing it to catch criminals and then since it only sees black people, its racist...

i LOVE the fact that he`s chill about it.. it`s not all pissed off like i know some people would be. i kinda like "this is funny..... i`m going to make a joke about it." not like "i`m so pissed. i hate this fcking thing!"

I have very very pale skin, to the point where random strangers have said "you`re very pale aren`t you?" and i am never picked up on facial recognition on mine, or anyone i knows, digital camera. All of my friends who are not as pale and friends who have olive and black skin are always fine!

I call racist against whiteys! lol

But seriously this seems like a big eff up!

HP figures that black people won`t be buying too many computers? Maybe its like those companies that would rather piss off/injure a few people and settle, rather than fix a problem...

I get it.
The people who created and tested the thing are all white. So no problems were ever seen before its release!

I`m sorry. =P

Its not racist, its just been badly designed.

They should be really happy about this, considering the law-enforcement applications a breakthrough like this could likely precipitate..

its funny cause its only for him. i saw an article yesterday (can`t remember the site) and they had black people and it was working. notice when he gets real close there`s not enough frontal light

Man! You can tell the software was designed by people of caucasian/asian descent. I think that they just didn`t include that aspect of the programming in the beta for this peice. Still LOLz...

"I said this in his youtube comments section. It`s not a large enough sample to say it`s racist. You need more than one African American and one Caucasian to prove racism. Show me 10 African Americans, all their faces failing, and 10 Caucasians, all their faces succeeding. Than we`ll say racism."

Aaaaand that`s about when I stopped laughing. :|

A lot of webcam thingies reverse the image... I do not know why.
It may be to mimic a mirror which we`re more used to.

Here`s my ONLY question.

Why is his name reversed on his name badge? And I don`t mean last name first... it`s mirrored.

That was hilarious. I love that he doesn`t accuse the company for being racist. He calls the computer racist.

That was win. Good job!

Ok... things like this usually have settings that need to be ajusted. I`m guessing white will work more often on default, but i bet if they looked at the manual, it would point out what to do for darker skin tones if the camera is not tracking properly.*

*Disclamer - I don`t own one, so I`m just making an educated guess.

Some of you commenters need to realise that intent isn;t necessary for something to be racist.
There doesn`t even have to be and maliciousness, it can just be accidental like in this case.
If this is true, then the people at HP obviously had no darker skinned people when testing this product and didn`t keep them in mind when designing the software.
It`s not hard to overlook a minority when you don`t see them much.
Not worth extreme condemnation, just a reminder to actually think when designing and testing software...

why would you WANT the computer to follow you like that? it kept zooming in on her face, sometimes you want to make gestures with your body (talking non-sexual here...but those also count), and this is just annoying. fixed cameras FTW

@Sordyh you show me someone who can move a camera that smoothly, and zoom a camera that quickly and effectively and I will give you $1,000,000. My computer has face tracking too, and it tracks with movements just like that.

Idiots...

Did you ever stop and realize that the so-called "web cam" is actually not a web cam but rather someone HOLDING the camera? I HIGHLY doubt that a "state of the art" computer system would have a design flaw such as this.

Yeah, I`m sure HP intended to do this.

Obviously this is an engineering fail, but a company would have to be NUTS to do this on purpose for racially motivated reasons.

it actually just goes off light reflection... any dark skinned -nesian (poly, micro, etc) would also not be recognized...

they did this on `Better Off Ted` too... "it`s not racial discrimination.. it`s just indifference.."
