This is some of the saddest I have seen on here since the photos from the women whose faces were burned by acid by their exes they turned down for marriage. This is truly an example of humanity`s darkest hours.

Ok, some of those arent the bystander effect, some are just people genuinly not giving a shiz. The most well known for the ;by stander effect` is the stabbed woman who`s neighbours didnt do anything. This is explained in robert cialdinis book on `influence`. In a situation where there are many people about people feel less personal responsibility for others, its like the butter of respnsibility is spread more and more thinly the more people are about. So, when people heard the woman screaming they looked around at their neighbours to look for `social proof` as to what they should be doing, when they saw many lights on and people looking too they assumed someone else would have phoned the police and felt less responsibility to do it themselves. Cialdini says if you want to make someone act in a circumstance where many people are about (say you car breaks down) you should single a person out and point to them and talk directly at them, dont just blindly wave and shout. The moment you mak

The cause of the bystander effect is diffusion of responsibility. It`s not that people don`t care, they just assume that someone else will do something. And if a person realizes that no one else is doing anything, they assume the situation must not be as serious as they imagine. Basically, it`s about people not wanting to appear foolish, as well as not wanting to get involved. It`s a pretty scary phenomenon.
That article was awfully written though.

Fail not to mention Matthew Carrington, a Chico State student who died as a result of water intoxication during fraternity hazing. Everyone knew they should call 911 but for some unexplained reason none of them actually called.

Oddly, only two short years later, that one radio station killed a mother of three the same way with their "hold your wee for a wii" stunt when contestants had to drink a LOT of water and not go to the bathroom. Not a single person said maybe this isn`t a good idea, and, well, here`s a link:

I can`t see how you would feel foolish calling the police about something you THINK is going on when million`s of people prank call authorities all the time. You won`t get arrested if there is some obvious reason for calling. People are sad living creatures.

Okay, so that was so drating depressing and sick I couldn`t read more than half.

You think the author could`ve gone into a little less graphic detail. It wasn`t even tastefully done (and anyone who`s seen Schindler`s List knows that there is a right way of doing things). It was like a police report -- stoic and emotionless. I even felt disgusting and dirty after reading it.

Sometimes you need a slap in the face to understand how atrocious things are.

I`m pretty sheltered and after seeing the starved African child, that tore my heart out and I felt guilty while I was eating |-(
I heard it was bad over there, but it really didn`t register until I saw that pic.

ok, ummm, I do not see how my comment completely lacked in empathy. I was reflecting the shadow in humanity and how sad it is that most people simply cannot be impulsed into helping anyone but themselves. I know this. You know this.

the girlfriend Lovelessbelieved Sharer to have stolen... They then Tackett and Loveless went joyriding... Loveless strangled became hysterical

Sincerely sorry for being a dick, but my brain literally shut down halfway through attempting to read that. I`m not sure where exactly, but it was definitely somewhere on the corner of Basic-Language-Skills Street and If-You`re-Going-Be-A-Writer-Then-Learn-To-Write-You-Illiterate-Dick Avenue.

Long-winded, accompanied by a deep sigh. Not everyone who can write, should.

This is the poo you expect to see in "shock" film scenes.
You don`t see Bruce Willis destroying a chopper with a motorbike in real life, and you shouldn`t see this poo in real life either.

So, how many of you have watched something bad happen and not done anything?
School fights, car crashes, robberies, etc.
If everyone who read comics/watched cartoons lived by the basic (positive) messages of those, then we would not have crap like this happening. Knowing is half the battle. The other half is doing something about it apparently.
