a lot of gangster rap began at the same time (Ice Cube, NWA), if not a few years earlier than groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Talib. Hip-hop/Rap has so many genres. You can`t say 1 rap song makes all of rap bad, thats like saying hawthorne heights makes led zeppelin bad.

its sad to see ppl think gangster rap and hip hop are the same. listen to Talib Kwali, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and other conscious rappers/hip hop artists. hip hop was not originally about gang banging and treating women badly, that`s a sub genre of it. ppl that usually hate rap think that`s all it is, but it is not. just like country music is not all domestic violence and alcoholism.

Hip hops no longer livin, in rocks shadow the kids are now spittin not singin."

"remember Kangol hats, fat laces and lino mats? Kids spinnin on their backs to the Sugarhill wax? now the Sugarhill`s collapsed and the sweets turned sour, money`s walkin my culture through its darkest hour. Now i wanna take ya back, walk my way through time, I was 2 years old in 1979, but its a time that i miss, you ask whats the difference? Hip hop was then a culture, now Hip Hop`s a business."

and ty peelos for speaking the truth--i mean really, do you turn on z100 and hear the "rock" thats on there? if you think rap is only the songs that exist on the radio ur seriously misinformed, born before the 1980s, or don`t know where to look for good rap (really hip-hop). Hip-hop is my favorite genre of music, hardcore genres come next, followed by experimental rap

Ignorance is bliss---rap lyrics:
I judge wisely/ as if nothin ever surprise me/
Loungin/ between two pillars of ivory/ I`m lively/ my dome piece/ is like buildin stones in Greece/ my poems are deep from ancient thrones I speak/ I`m overwhelmed/ as my mind, roams the realm/ My eye`s the vision, memory is the film
/Others act sub-tile, but they fragile above clouds/ They act wild and couldn`t budge a crowd

And anyone that can show me a full 16 bars from Jay-Z or Eminem that proves they`re absolutely horrible gets a trophy and the right to claim the title "destroyer of Hip-Hop"

The trophy is T-Pains BIG ASS CHAIN.

...No it`s not?

The only people that blatantly hate rap get their examples from MTV. They get all their votes from party dudes and tweens.

Would you let drunken frat boys and pre-teen girls mold your opinion on lifestyle and politics? No? Then maybe you should do the smart thing and explore the world a bit. form your own opinions based on your own experiences.

I`d voice my opinion here, but it would pretty much echo a couple of other people here (best put by GosuPaul).
I just want to ask you guys one question, since I`m one of the rare people out there who actually listen to more than one genre (most people claim to but very few actually do), and I think this one gets most people every time.

Are Creed, Nickleback and Three Days Grace spokespeople for rock? No? Then stop considering Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne and Maino spokespeople for rap.

Don`t hate something just because you know nothing about it and feel like it`s easier to debase than educate yourself.

I`m going to defend the Rap culture and hopefully you can look past my age and listen to the words.

The main-main stream hype rap is terrible, I agree. All they talk about is some sort of new dance that they want you to do, or talkin` about some butts and drinks. Rarely do these songs stick around for long in my playlist. True hip hoppers feel just about the same way I do. The good stuff is deeper, and more hidden. It`s not the stuff that rolls around on the radio.

Rather than judge by the mask they veil over the face of Hip Hop/rap, why not explore a little? Like someone said before, it`s basically poetry set to a beat alot of the time. People like Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, Notorious BIG are the people you should get your impressions from.

Don`t be too quick to form an opinion. It`d be similar to me listening to John Williams and then preaching about how Classical/orchestral music is terrible. Or if I listened to Green Day and told you that all punk music sucks.

If you find the right kind of rap it`s either poetry set to a beat or bad ass techno/electronica/funk with lyrics.
