The fork isn`t really there. However the cat is, which easily still makes it somewhat creepy. "Grandma is dead, someone grab the cat and get the cotton."

I`ve heard the whole fork/spoon thing in open caskets before. It`s supposed to symbolize how heaven is "dessert" and there`s that whole phrase "save your spoon/fork for dessert." I can`t remember the actual metaphor, but that`s the gist of it.

@uncertainty: You pretty much hit it on the head. It`s actually, "Save your fork. The best is yet to come."
This is pretty common in the South, where a lot of churches have potlucks at least one Sunday a month.

She`s not dead. See the age spots on her arm? If she were really dead her coloring would be pale white which is why morticians use skin toned make-up for those who`ll be open-casket viewed. I can`t see a mortician spending the amount of time needed to cover all that exposed skin as well as dot in all those spots. Plus the coloring is too good. I could go on and wonder about the strange objects placed with her in the casket, but I`ve been to viewings where people stick stuff in the coffin that represented something closely connected with the deceased.

Airbrush. It explains the coloring and maybe he was feeling creative? I`ve seen dead people that have color. And age spots don`t disappear with make-up, especially if they`re dark. Stop over analyzing.

Ambient lighting will have a lot to do with that colour (the whites in the photo also have a colour cast to them). Plus age spots don`t always disappear when the colour goes - several deceased people I`ve viewed had them on their arms & a couple also had a yellow cast to the skin (due to what they died of).

Pandabear, not over analyzing, just been to enough funerals and open caskets to know better. And air-brush may be a technique, but it`s not that precise. Also, emballming leaves a cadaver more bloated than this one. You mean to tell me that the family who dressed granma in a Wal-mart shirt paid for a better than most mortician`s dressage? And what mortician takes such strides for details in air brushing to include the coloration of the veins?
Yeah, I`ll see the obvious, you just keep trying to deny it without giving any reasonable examples why I`m wrong.

@Bored2Run- My grandma died about 6 months ago and she had an open casket. All her age spots were visable. Not on her face becasue of how much make up, but on her arms and chest. They don`t always fade. That picture of her laying there like that is burned into my brain. I really miss her. :(

Some people get burried with a fork as a way of saying `the best is yet to come`.

Its something to do with always saving a fork after dinner for dessert.

yeah, because christians (at least baptists that i know) think of your life and afterlife as a meal. they believe that life is the main course but heaven is dessert. the best kinds of dessert (pie/cake) you need a fork to eat. actually if the person really liked ice cream maybe they should be burried with a spoon. it is like people before me have said a way to state "the best is yet to come". its a weird way to state this, and to those who have no idea what its for these people look insane.
