Paying the doctor for being healthy is a very clever concept that may cut the costs of western health care systems by some good amount.
By this method doctors are realy motivated to care about the well-being of their patients. As it is now a doctor is (financially) best of with patients who are constantly ill, so curing them is not in his interest.

Its funny living in NYC because it seems so obvious to me to think of blocks as 34th and 5th or something. Never even occurred to me that naming blocks makes sense too.

Yeah, I`ve been trying to explain this to my Western friends in Dubai for years.

We have street names, but we have a Japanese mentality. I`ve been laughing for years at my western friends trying to tell the pizza delivery guy directions by talking about street names.

"FFS! It`s street 17C, house 11!!!! FFS!!!"
"Pass me the phone"
"STFU! I`m explaining! HE doesn`t get it!"
"Pass... Hello, do you know the Manchester Clinic? Yup? Same street, house number 11. Thanks. You too."

Very interesting.

As long as it can make sense when you need to use it, don`t argue.

So... when, say, I think of rule 34... then... guh?!

I don`t know about that, since numbering the streets consecutively makes it easy to figure out which way you need to go. If this is 34th street, go toward 33rd street and 32nd street will be the one after that. Not sure how I would find a particular block in Japan unless they all happen to be numbered consecutively in a systematic way, rather than in chronological order, since a visitor could never know the chronology.

Combine the japanese block-name and the western street-name systems and you have a winner.

Interesting! Japanese way makes a lot of sense but I bet it takes a lot of time for foreigners/tourists to get used to it. Either way, I`m bad with directions. @_@

If you come to my town and I tell you to go to North Joseph street will you know which way to go?

Yeah, you take Street A, all the way until you reach a 7-11, thats North Joseph

The stupid way will, you pass block 1, then 3, then 14, you reach a 7-11, thats block 2.

sooo, you have to drive around the whole block to find the house you are looking for... stupid

"how are you supposed to give directions to find a certain block if that person doesn`t know offhand which blocks are which?"

If you come to my town and I tell you to go to North Joseph street will you know which way to go?

Well, you have to take into account that America is a baby. The Japanese nation has been around for oh what, ten times longer than us? So our houses may have only been built in the 1950`s. What if you`re on a block where the buildings are basically refurbished homes from the 1100`s?

You have to abandon the all-about-me if-it`s-hard-I-don`t-want-to-do-it cultural mentality we have here in america. :-)

The Japanese sytem sucks a butt from a non-Japanese viewpoint, but seems totally logical from the average Japanese. You`d have to live there long enough to appreciate it.

I don`t like the adress system, Lets say you are looking for a certain house and you have the house number, you have no idea where on the block that house is located, it must suck to be a delivery person there.

I agree. What at all is efficient or reasonable about numbering houses based on the date they were built?

"This is very cool and efficient."

How is it efficient to try to find a certain house/shop if they`re numbered by order of date? Not to mention: how are you supposed to give directions to find a certain block if that person doesn`t know offhand which blocks are which? They`d have to be given landmarks which aren`t efficient at all since landmarks certainly change a lot faster than street names do, and what one person considers a landmark another might ignore entirely

I don`t get it, if you`re not from that area in Japan, how are you supposed to know which order the houses were built on the block??

Am I only one to think that the address Japanese system is crap? I mean, if you were looking for an unfamiliar address... unless you carry around a map, or somehow know what the order that the buildings were built on that block, the numbers would be all over the f*cking place.

oh hey! I have that upsidedown map, it`s pretty coo. I actually find countries on it faster somehow...

This is very cool and efficient. I wish we used this system here. You could always find the place you are looking for, even if you didn`t know where it was.

Paying a doctor when you are well however, is a bad idea. Of course, people are well, more then they are sick. You`d be paying your doctor far more often.

Both the address system in Japan and paying the doctor to keep you healthy seem much more reasonable.

Good post Matwix 2004...finally something decent on IAB! Living in Asian countries, I knew some of this. I did not know about paying the doctor when you`re well though.
