For all we know there could be a massive, complex ecosystem just under the surface of Mars, but because we`re examining the surface which most life abandoned a loooong time ago we can`t find any evidence beyond microbes :p

wow it was only a matter of time before this happened. And according to the Drake Equation, as ilitrt placed up here, even if you take 1% of all the stars in our galaxy, you will still get over 50,000 earth-like planets in the milky way and over 5 million in the universe so GO SCIENCE !!!!!!!

The Drake Equation
N = R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L
Where,
N = The number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.
R* =The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.
fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.
ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.
fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.
fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.
fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

"The Maddog" I agree. Still, it`s encouraging to think that scientists are close to reaching the goal of finding life, or proof of life, before we even get to Mars.

"Newton said that a constant forces decrees a constant acceleration."

From the proper reference frame, it does.

The article seemed a little amateurishly written. I`d like to believe that there is or was life on Mars, but I don`t think they`ve really proved it yet.

Newton said that a constant forces decrees a constant acceleration. Einstein needs to get his facts straight.

The general biology community agreed that the grooves in the original meteor from allan hill was too small to be life. So who ever wrote this article seems to need to get his facts straight.

murph89 - the Meteor crashed 13,000 years ago, not far back enough. Allthough it was floating around space for 16 million years, and it takes 7 months (ideal conditions) to get from Earth to Mars using conventional methodes.

However, 16 million is still not far back enough...

Life is a disease of matter. I`m certain the Universe is infested with it.

Cue abiogenesis argument in 3... 2... 1...
--------------------------------------------------

What argument? It`s well on it`s way to being proven!

Clicky

Ok..so it,s not "full" life in some peoples eyes but RNA is without doubt, what simplest self-replicating structures are made from..and without that facility you cant have life!

Not a bad breakthrough and we can only progress from here!

Ummm..I dont know how to tell you this but this is old news! The original press release back in 96 was a big thing! Since you where both kiddies back then you can be forgiven for not knowing!

Basically (as I said) there was a big press release and everybody went "ooo" and "ahhh" then another buch of scientists came out and claimed it wasnt proof, wasnt from Mars or even a fossil etc etc.

Basically they`ve been testing it to death since then and nothing has been able to disprove what was originally claimed!

Wiki Info

Anyway..I remember Clinton making a big deal about it on TV at the time...and it was a big deal but like anything else in the scientific community, the nay sayers came out and it promptly went into "It`s a theory" catagory and was promoptly forgotten by millions!

Could use a new title- the big news is that the evidence for life is in a meteor that hit Earth. In other words this is evidence life on Earth could descend from life on Mars. Look up panspermia on wikipedia for more info.

Do does this mean the scientific community finally agree that there "was" life on Mars (and mayby still is) or are we going to dance around the subject for the next 13 years?

Fact is, untill someone lands on Mars and finds proof it will remain an open subject. Still..the fact there is ice on Mars is a good sign!

Ooooh, interesting stuff. Shame they`re only bacteria, but still, if they can prove for certain there is life on Mars, then... that`s pretty awesome.
