I don`t mind eating animals. I think they are generally tasty. I don`t even mind eating raw fish. Love it in fact. I`ve shot a deer, and ate parts of it. This, however, seems a little wrong to me. Actually, no, this seems a lot wrong to me. Cutting up and eating something that`s still moving is a little disturbing.

On the contrary, scottk6, fish most certainly *do* have a nervous system and they *do* feel pain.

I`m no animal rights activist--I worked for a fur company, I work in a lab that uses animal subjects--but this is sad and it makes me a little sick, to be honest.

    I doubt it`s really alive.
I skinned a lot of fish when I was little, and I remember that when I was done with it and throw out the rest, the mouth would still be moving. It`s just reflexes, since there`s no way it could have still been alive (no guts, organs or anything).
This fish is gutted as well, so how the hell can it still be "alive"?

Jeez people, you really think that is more cruel than fish dragged up in a net and left to suffocate on a ship`s deck or in the hold? Or being crushed in the drag net, or even being hauled up by a hook through the tongue / cheek / gills etc.

Sure it looks cruel, but I think people are getting a little soft about where their food comes from. Too many people see food as something cling film / saran wrapped on a supermarket shelf and not from it`s original state....

Actually, no, this dosen`t seem wrong to me at all. Cutting up and eating something that`s still moving is freakin awesome. I think I`m going to have to try to see if I can cook the bottom half of a fish and eat it while it`s still alive as well. If everything works out as planned, I can put him back in water once I`m done and see if I can nurture him again to health so that I can do it again. Rinse and Repeat I always say. Once I succeed, the "feed a man a fish" saying will be irrelevant, all you have to do is teach him how to cook it properly. :)

I was thinking this too (I love to fish and eat the fish... North Dakota walleye is delicious), but the way they were killed as shown in the link that someone else posted is really messed up. You should sever the spine at the neck before gutting the damn thing. <_< It`s just gratuitous sadism otherwise.

Vanilla, there is a special dish where they literally take the fish out of the water, fry it for a few seconds, then plop it on your plate. Chances are that fish is still alive.

No matter how you look at it, it would still suck to be grilled alive. Although I haven`t eaten it with the head still whole like that, I ate prongs of equivalent freshness, and when going to the fish market, I am regularly getting fish that`s still jiggling in the bag, even if it`s all prepared and sliced. So I cannot really say I`d eat food that looks at you like that, I can`t tell I haven`t eaten equivalent. Won`t throw the first stone on that.

d4es: I see your point, but that`s more or less nature.

This isn`t nature, this is just human cruelty. The fish seen in the video is in extreme pain and suffering while the others are laughing and eating it. So the repulsive thing isn`t the served moving fish, it`s how cruel humans can be.

I couldn`t care less, to be honest. Maybe a year ago I might have thought differently, but with all the moaning I don`t care anymore.

Human cruelty? Pfft. We need to bloody eat. I`d have no problem ripping a chickens head off if I had to eat. I`m sure a bear would have no problem mauling me if it had to eat, or just in general. I imagine someone trying to argue against that would bring up intelligence, but it has nothing to do with it.

So yeah, I don`t really care about animals anymore.

Aside from the fact that this poor creature is suffering horribly, it`s a damned CARP! Around here, they`re considered "trash fish" along with suckers and gar. Nobody with any self-respect eats carp -- dead or alive.

"Why are people so repulsed by this? How do you think animals eat each other in the wild."

Mainly because we are able to end an animal`s pain instantaneously, and it is seen as merciful to do so before eating one.

People that get a turd in their pants about it are most likely afraid of becoming a selfish or feelingless monster that doesn`t care about the pain or suffering of others, and then it normally overflows onto other people that don`t share their own view.

However different societies see things differently, that`s why in one part of the world, women are covered from head to foot in clothing at all times, where in another, they can go around one step away from nude and not bat an eyelash.

How is it still alive? It looks like the meat they`re eating has been cooked- it comes apart way too easy to be raw. Did they cut the meat off, cook it, and put it back before the fish died?

I`ve seen this before in another video but just the head by itself that moved. I think the body was completely cooked but the head was uncooked so it`s still alive. I like how they shrug off the fact the fish is alive in about 20 seconds.

Gotta say I agree with the cruelty thing... there is no need to burn the flesh of something, while it is still alive, before you eat its burned flesh, again while it is still alive.

And no, I`m not a vegetarian, I have no qualms about eating any animal, as long as it has not been tortured beforehand.

1st, this might be a japanese dish, but the people are not speaking japanese, its probably chinese (its what it sounds like)

    2nd @ valamir,
no, my friend...the rice is called gohan (when its cooked and ready to eat), sushi is the dish made with rice and fish and whatever....
sashimi is just the raw fish and nothing more...i dont know if this is considered sashimi

That is in fact extremely gross due to my cultural upbringing in America, but you guys have to consider the differences.

Every culture has their ethical boundaries and taboos that you don`t cross. Maybe wherever this is, you can eat fish live, but you can`t ever speak casually to an elder.

In contrast, people would get protested upon for serving live fish, but if we speak to an old man with disrespectful tones, you`d get a slap on the wrist, if that.

Before you go judging the integrity of another culture, please try to think of our world holistically. It`s hard, but for a truly valid opinion, it`s necessary.

GosuPaul, by your reasoning we could never criticize anything anyone did because it`s all subjective. Well some things aren`t. If one person`s actions causes any suffering in others, it`s an objective matter and just because it has to do with another country`s culture doesn`t mean we can`t subject it to judgement.
also, I don`t think this is really part of chinese culture anyways. The woman in the video was like, "I`m so scared right now." It probably happened on accident.

You`re exactly right. Everything IS subjective. I never said that I was perfect, or that everyone ought to be perfect and consistently consider everyone and everything before making any opinions. I said try, and that`s all humanity truly can do. No man or woman can be perfect in their considerations, but they can definitely try before shouting obscenities about another culture or people.

It wasn`t an accident. There have been videos and competitions about keeping fish twitching and (argu

I`ve heard of this happening before. The fish is caught fresh out of the tank and quickly deep fried on each side for a few moments, just long enough to sear the skin and paritally cook the flesh, then served to the table to prove it`s freshness. It`s one of those `specialy chef dishes`. It`s really no worse than the diced up still squirming octopus tenticles.
