But then again, what do you expect from a country that promotes their women to bind their feet.

Not much... which doesn`t matter here, because feet binding was a Chinese custom about 100 years ago and this picture is from modern-day Japan.

i think you attach it to your mirror and try to mimic your smile to go with the bar. But that is just a guess.

It`s the Chinese that were into foot binding... Not the Japanese. The Chinese saw it as a symbol of nobility if the woman never hand to leave the house, the noble woman`s saying went something like "A lady should never have to take more than two steps outside her home." Feet were bound to make proof of this. It also where the idea that pale white skin is sexy in China... But i don`t see it.

`So where do you actually insert it to smile like that? `

Hah, did you mean it to come out like that or was that unintentional? XD

How does this work? And why did they use and American girl instead of a Japanese girl? Maybe they`re trying to tell us that we need to smile more. ??

and going back to the chinese/japanese debate, the japanese were so against foot binding that when they invaded taiwan they banned foot binding in 1895.... I thought the japanese found the idea of toes sexy, hence why geisha wear those flipflop sandal things and two-toe socks? or am i chatting bollocks?

"there are people that can`t smile? O.o"

No, they just don`t smile properly. I could see this becoming some kind of goth trend or something. The idea of a synthetic smile is very metaphorical.

Oh Internet commenters, your correctly distinguishing between Japanese and Chinese, as well as understanding that Chinese foot binding is outdated and essentially equivalent to U.S. slavery warms my heart. It`s like... somehow you`re all on the internet, but not retarded. It`s really weird.

Next thing you know I`m going to go on yahoo answers and find a useful and grammatically correct answer.

"I have to agree, this is japanese not chinese. Japanese people never bound their feet. Also, its now illegal in china to bind your feet, and that`s been illegal for an extremely long time. We were once the only developed country left with slavery, but people dont refer to us as "that country that still has slaves"

I will now!!!

japanese woman dont bind their feet. and chinese woman dont do it anymore. they used to, thats why its only really old ladies that have it done. but they dont promote it anymore. it was the times. kind of like how woman used to wear too-tight corsets and faint all the time...

Instead of fixing the smile, bleach the teeth so they don`t look so cheesy.

Also...China had the foot wrappings...not Japan...and not for hundreds of years...I`m sure this has already been mentioned.

Japanese women never bound their feet. That happened in China. And it also hasn`t happened in centuries.

This is actually a fairly acceptable product...
And Japanese women don`t bind their feet.
And Chinese women haven`t done it for the most part in a long time... Because if you do, you can`t freaking walk properly.

I think Cracked in general is a bit vague about Asia. In fact, a bit vague about anywhere they haven`t woken up in. And even more vague about those. It isn`t National Geographic.

All these comments about the mistaken reference to China, but no one pointed out that this product has a Caucasian model with light hair and blue eyes doing the selling, despite the little photo up in the right corner of a Japanese woman.

As well as the incorrect country, there`s also the incorrect tense. It`s past, not present. You might as well say that France is a country where they burn heretics, or whatever.

But more to the point, wtf is with the upside down smile in the bottom picture?

0
Reply
Male 3,482
I see a ban in dohdot`s future...

And, as usual, language determining FAIL.

Japan didn`t bind feet, China did. And if you`re thinking this is Chinese... Then still FAIL.

Seriously, I know I went on a rant against your Japan-ism a while back...

But for christ`s sake Fancy, if you`re not going to at least learn how east-asian languages LOOK different, let alone learn to read them, then just stop posting them...
