What was confusing as hell to me is that while reading this story another girls name would pop up. I would then scroll back up the page to look at the previous name just to be sure it isn`t the same girl, and then I would continue on reading. I mean how the hell could he have almost gotten married to the first girl only to break up with her and then immediatly get with another girl shortly after and them dump her as well. Then he got together with yet ANOTHER girl, date her for what looked to be less than a year and then marry her! WTF?

But besides that little mess up of his life, I respect the guy for joining the military which has been something I had always thought of doing until life took me on a different path, and my medical record got in the way. It is undoubtable that he did a great thing for his country that some people are dumb enough to degrade and then have the arrogance to call him a murderer, which is most untrue. The people the military are fighting at this moment are

i agree with almightybob to an extent. i support the soldiers but i am very much against officers, recruiters especially, and the military system itself.

also it looks like odeed has a problem with opinions contrary to his own...but its not my place to throw insults his way just because he`s different so i will be the mature one and step down.

The two giant fallacies put forth about soldiering are: "They`re hero`s" and "They`re fighting for our freedoms".

As this post proves, they are neither.

We have an inability in our country to put the shoe on the other foot. Imagine if we were invaded and told how to live by some foreign nation. Would you help the invaders or be considered a terrorist by their media?

Wow, some pretty extreme opinions being voiced on here.

Still, I bet if the war on your soil, you`d be turning to people like Joe to defend you?

That Kirsten girl is kidding herself. He`s been with three girls within a short amount of time, and she think he`ll commit to her for the rest of their lives? I don`t think so.

I enjoyed the photojournalist article. However, I don`t think enrolling into the military makes one a hero. I believe the term "hero" is quite overused these days. There are actual heroes [who do more than patrol roads and escort people], like teachers, doctors, et cetera who have greater influence on people (their ambitions, their health...). Anyway, this guy in the article seems like the biggest douchebag ever, and it takes more than his job position for me to respect him.

military dogs! I have met a handful of guys like this. They are usually only interested in making money. Let`s face it, you come from a family that doesn`t have enough money to send you to college, can`t find a job, don`t really know what to do after high school, so you join the army. It works out for everyone. You get an education and a job, while the government gets more dogs to use in pointless campaigns.

Oh, and most of those guys get with these woman that want structure and stability, and they end up having kids and splitting up. Over half of the guys I know in the army have kids and have been divorced, or are going through the process.

How did he managed to get through three girls while away for a year? And how quickly did he get married like. Not smart

Bob... most of them guys are just everyday people, but they`re desensitised to death and trained to kill... ultimately their innocence is stripped away be a government and military regime in a conflict that has nothing to do with these boys... he just looks like a dumb kid, but he`ll end up with empty eyes and the fear......

"Wow, talk about douchebag."

I`m quite serious actually, beyond joining the military in the first place (which is a whole other debate), just about every other entry is a mistake of some sort. Ian gets a drug addiction. Ian is late to his station. Ian spends a ton of money on some girl he isn`t going to marry. Ian hooks up and breaks up with a girl over a small period of time. Ian gets married to a girl he`s dated for a couple months. Ian is beginning to hate the situation he`s in. The list goes on.

He did some good things, certainly, but it`s just so eclipsed by how he`s seemed to mismanage just about every aspect of his life. Rather than feel inspired, I just feel like I want to avoid being this guy at all costs.

But, eh, I guess different people are inspired by different things

Looks like someone has missed the point of wars, obviously they`re awful, but the wars you describe haven`t been fought in western countries since the days of imperialism. idiot.

Ian sits at the table with his essentials: cellphone, energy drink, cigarettes and a vial of Vicodin. In addition to his foot injury, Ian recently strained his back while weightlifting and is now taking muscle relaxants. Eric Fisher expresses concern about the drugs, but Ian dismisses it: “At least it’s not coke, Ecstasy, weed. … I’ve got like six‚ seven different medications now. They give it to you for a reason. I’m not going to just let them sit there.”

Hmmmm... Vicodin and six or seven other pain medications, cigarettes, and energy drinks... are less harmful than weed? =\ Yeah right...

Incredible post, I`ve shared this with all my friends. As a staunch opponent to the invasion of Iraq, I would say this series of pics transcends that, and tell the human story of a kid, any kid, who goes out do what he believes in.

I`m a bleeding-heart liberal (as the insult goes) and I thought this was just amazing. As much as I disagreed with the whole fiasco, this shows the human story, of people involved.

I`m done with scoring points, lets hope these guys have a full and happy life. Surely that`s all one can ask.

Come home safe, guys.

"Lets see you do it, fresh out of high school. Lets see if you have the guts and the courage to do that.
I seriously think you don`t."

I think you`re confusing courage with bravado and stupidity. he wasn`t being brave, he didn`t know what he was doing with his life, like many people. unfortunately for him, he didn`t work hard in school and had a 2.0 gpa, meaning it`d have been hell to get into college and decide his future.

if I was the enemy, I`d be thrilled to read this article, this is the typical soldier of the US, a 18 year old douche. I say douche because he gets engaged in Dec, she breaks up with him in March, he immediately "is in love" with another girl and broken up within a couple of weeks, and finally meets a girl in March and is married by Aug...

“When I come home from Iraq, I’ll be in the best shape of my life,”

no, that should`ve been when you left home...

okay seriously anyone who comments on here saying that "going over and fighting" does not make them a hero is a complete moron, and has a warped sense of what a hero is. I think that all of you people should go to hell, and you are ungrateful. comments like that make more more mad than I can even express. These men and women put their effing lives on the line and you have no respect for them at all? I have no respect for anyone like that.

I agree with the people saying Ian`s sort of a loser. He seemed completely unable to make responsible decisions, and...I don`t know. I`m sick of hearing the stories about the kids who do badly in high school and join the army, fight, and they come out and everyone`s all like "HOMYGAWD you are an american hero." I`m totally the only one, and I might seem like a dick for saying this all, but fighting in the war does NOT make you a hero or anyting similar to it to me in any way, shape, or form.

I think some of the comments are a bit harsh. Surely enough, he admit to be confused, and look for a path for his future. In the process, he makes a tough and (debatably) brave decision in joining the Army to be deployed in Iraq.

I don`t glorify Armies, nor wars - especially not the war in Iraq. But I recognize what it takes to someone to put himself in a life threatening situation for believing in something.

His choice is something very few of us would make. Not because of our degrees, or our career, or our wife/girlfriends, or childrens. But because most of us aren`t ready to die for our ideas, or to sort our lives.

No matter if you think he is a loser, dumb, or if the war in Iraq is justified, or not. He deserves respect.

yeah ian does seem like a loser, and i`m not big on the soldier fetish these days, slapping a uniform on him doesn`t make him a hero. but he`s living his life in a good way instead of screwing it up. yeah, maybe he`s getting something in return, a paycheck and college education when he gets out with the g.i.bill but he could do worse. it`s just too bad you have to kill people for an opportunity in this world.

weed and ecstacy are purely recreational drugs. and ecstasy as been know to cause severe mental deficiencies. vicodin is no where nearly as bad as it is. the only problems with vicodin is its addicting and can cause some liver problems if abused, aside from that it has many positive things that it does for people in real pain.
