Unfortunately, side effects happen. Thousands of lives are saved every year for every one person who has a bad outcome. I feel for her, but don`t let this negatively effect how you approach vaccinations....one could save your life someday.

THE FLU SHOT IS WHAT IS GIVING YOU THE SWINE FLU!!!! DONT TRUST A F**KING PUBLIX OR BLOCKBUSTER TO GIVE YOU A SHOT!!!! YOU WILL DIE!!!! In south florida over the past 24 hours 86 people died of swine flu. Majority of them had recieved a shot. Same is happening everywhere else. Wear a god damn mask and carry some hand sanitizer.

I have never gotten a flu shot for the annual flu and don`t plan on getting one for the swine flu. If I die from getting the flu, then I die from getting the flu. I`m sorry, but I would much rather get the flu or even die from it than have even a rare chance of having something like this happen to me.

PS - For those that are paranoid about the swine flu, 40,000 people die EACH YEAR from the annual flu (and that inlcudes people that get the shot), and only a few hundred have died from the swine flu. People are WAY over-paranoid about the swine flu. You have a greater chance of dying from the annual flu than you do the swine flu.

@est87jmg: Do you have a source for that, or are you just spouting BS?

    Yea..., go Fox!
Two things. One, I don`t think this flew season is any different than any other season. So you won`t be seeing me get the shot. Secondly, if it had been out of hand then way to go fox for taking a one in a million chance to scare people out of getting the flu shot.
Oh, and est87jmg, your an idiot.

    So it works like this...
36,000 in the US alone die from the flu without the shot + 1 person had a bad reaction to the shot = Flu shot is a bad thing?
I feel sorry for doctors that have to deal with people that think like that... I know it is mainly elder people who die from the flu but still...

"10 days after the shot she got the flu. After that, her health spiralled downward."

What the hell makes them think it was the flu shot then? Considering she actually had flu, it would be damn hard to find any reason that the injection of dead flu ages ago was the cause.

Personally, I wouldn`t have an injection in a grocery store. I don`t trust grocery stores to dispense medicine other than over the counter drugs, plasters and bandages.

A 10 day delay between the flu jab and flu? The incubation period for flu isn`t 10 days. It`s rarely even half that. So it appears that the two are unrelated, unless it`s a very different strain of flu.

Then there`s the issue of what might cause such a reaction after 10 days. What`s in the vaccine she had?

It appears that she`s arguing that a combination of the vaccine and the flu 10 days later caused her illness - does anyone have any idea as to how that could happen?

"aren`t we just making ourselves weaker by trying to use drugs to combat things like this?"

Possibly, but probably not except for drugs that suppress the immune system. The main issue regarding over-use is antibiotics, but that`s nothing to do with weakening people. The issue there is that bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics faster than humans devise new antibiotics.

"isn`t your immune system supposed to take care of viruses and the like?"

Only to some extent. Many viruses and other infections will kill a human anyway, regardless of their immune system. Take a look back in history - it`s a shocker. I suggest tuberculosis as a good starting point. Or maybe the Black Death (although it`s not certain what that was, modern medicine could probably cure it).

Vaccines are a trainer for the immune system, teaching it to recognise a microbe. In that sense, they strengthen it. It`s like giving photos of troublemakers to security guards.

Smilin Sam, vaccinations do not weaken our immune system, they "prepare" antibodies for that strain of virus, by basically allowing our immune system to destroy a very very weak form of the virus...

most all shots have side effects you can find people if you look for them that has had problems resulting from a shot. Course again the news is going to hype this all up. Sheesh woman have died because of tampons, TSS, everything is a danger. but the news just likes to scare people more because the swine flu is what is the big fear right now.

If you take a vaccine, you are getting a weak form of the virus. That`s it: A weak form of the virus in question to allow your immune system to produce antibodies. Occasionally, it`s not that weak, and you get sick. That`s how it goes. This scare is almost as idiotic as the idea of the autism link.

Even if this isn`t a case of post hoc ergo propter hoc, a tiny percentage of vaccinated patients experiencing incredibly severe side effects is still better than a flu epidemic. It`s preferable for one person to be paralyzed than it is for more than one to die. Getting vaccinated isn`t all about you; it`s about protecting everyone from the spread of infectious disease. Get vaccinated if you can, especially if you`re in a high-risk demographic.

This is why I never, under any circumstances watch Faux news.

Listen, this story is tragic but the way it is being spun is so disingenuous and misleading.

This is NOT an effect specific to influenza vaccines and is actually a possible rare auto immune reaction to any foreign infectious matter that your body might respond to. It is not yet known if it is directly connected to the antigens in the influenza vaccine or by bacterial contamination, but even so the chances of having this specific auto immune reaction is (and I quote directly) one in a million.

I will leave it to the individual to decide if its worth getting the swine flu vaccine but just do the math. This one case thus far of a person receiving this kind of reaction versus the 80 kids who have already died from swine flu.

Why is it that the people who get the flu shots are the ones that get sick? I mean look at this Case. Or for that matter how did the "flu season" even start? I mean there wasn`t one 20-30 years ago but now we have them?
Furthermore, how in the name of sweet 4lb 5 oz baby Jesus is the person vaccinated at the greater risk of contracting the cold over someone who`s not? And the cold virus is RNA so vaccines are pointless cause the virus is always mutating. But that`s my opinion, I could be wrong...

Naz, first, you need to distinguish the difference between the cold and the flu. They are very different. Second, what makes you think there wasn`t a flu season 30 years ago? I`ve never once heard that claim made before. Third, you might want to read some of these comments. Considering that the incubation period or the flu is less than 10 days and her symptoms started 10 days after her shot, there is a popsicle`s chance in hell that the shot has anything to do with her flu, let alone her crippling deterioration thereafter.

Do you guys know what a vaccine is? It`s a bunch of DEAD virus "bodies" that they inject you with. The purpose of this is so that your body learns to recognize and make a game plan to fight off the illness. There are no (correctly done and scientifically accepted) studies that show any wide-spread linkage from vaccines to these horrible ailments to which people seem to attribute.

The vaccine had nothing to do with it, I think.
There is a rare genetic condition (I don`t know the ratio..) that can cause anyone who has it to become paralyzed or have serious brain damage when they come down with influenza.
She contracted it despite the vaccine, is all.

@NAZEREL: You should read up on the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. It`s actually pretty fascinating. It was a flu that hit near the end of World War I, and killed ~50-100 million people (5-10 times MORE than the actual World War killed). Incidentally, it was also H1N1.

To everybody else, FYI, in science, anecdotal evidence is almost worthless. You have to look at the overall numbers. If you are .1% likely to get the flu and die, but .001% likely to get a horrible side effect from the vaccine, you should take it. It`s just that simple. Yes, somebody, somewhere may have a terrible response to the vaccine. But it`s still the right call.

    Wewoo.....
The vaccine triggered it...that means the vaccine did in fact have something to do with it..not nothing.
Someone did the math and figured if everyone in California takes the shot about 300-500 people would have severe life threatening side effects.
Out of several million people those odds are not bad at all.
In fact the way the statistics stand you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning or being killed in a plane crash then coming down with severe side effects.
At least according to the numbers.

This vaccine disabled one person! We must ban the flu vaccine!

By this logic we should ban cars because people occasionally get hit by them.

    "Whats psychogenic dystonia?"

Dystonia is involuntary sustained muscle contractions that lead to abnormal movements and postures, according to the organisation in the UK set up to help people with it. It can also cause involuntary movements (as a result of muscle contractions, obviously).

If something is psychogenic, it is caused by the mind. That doesn`t mean it`s put on, or that it`s not real. A person with a psychogenic condition genuinely has the symptoms of that condition, it`s just that there isn`t a physical cause. Which can make it much harder to treat.

"The vaccine triggered it...that means the vaccine did in fact have something to do with it..not nothing."

What makes you think that it was triggered by the vaccine injected more than 10 days before it, rather than by the flu that marked the start of it?

    opiebreath:

A more plausible argument is that it is the other stuff in the vaccine that can harm, not the dead cells used to enable the immune system to recognise an infection of live cells of the same type.

Some vaccines still contain mercury, and that is seriously toxic.

And doctors wonder why people want to actively refuse flu shots. I don`t want to be the .00000001% that has a severe reaction to the flu shot. I would much rather go through the flu the way they did for centuries, it seems safer when you hear stories like this.

People are really poor at judging relative risks. Yes if you do not get the flu shot you eliminate the 1 in a million chance that you will have a significant reaction to the flue shot. On the other hand you keep the 0.1 percent chance of dying from the flu. For you that are bad at math 0.1% is 1 out of 1000. Even if this number is inflated 10 times would your rather have a 1/10,000 chance of dying from the flu or a 1/1,000,000 chance of having a significant reaction to the flu shot? The choice seems easy to me.

I know this is very rare, but there is no way in hell that I`m getting a flu vaccination.
I`ve never had one, and I see no reason to get one. I never get a vaccination unless it is required in some way (such as the MMR and Tetanus vaccinations that were required by my school district back in grade school).
I`m also refusing to get this new H1N1 vaccination, even though everyone seems to be getting encouraged to get it. It`s brand new, and it was rushed through production, so there may be some chance that there is some kind of side effect that they don`t know about...and I`m not going to be that one in a million to get it.

"I`d rather just have the flu. A week in bed away from work sounds kinda nice right about now."

If you break your leg with a hammer, you could get more time off in bed. You`d also feel far less bad than you would with flu.

Flu cannot sensibly be considered a "kinda nice" way to spend a week. Not actual flu, as opposed to a heavy cold.

"I would much rather go through the flu the way they did for centuries,"

That would be wondering if your children would die, maybe dying yourself, maybe having other family members die.

Flu has killed a lot of people over the years. I don`t think you`d really like to go through it like they did for centuries.

The worst ever pandemic in terms of death and speed was flu. No-one really knows how many died, because it was too many to record. 50 million dead in just over a year is one of the lower estimates. Even the Black Death of 1347-41 didn`t kill that many, although only because there were far fewer people then - it killed a much higher proportion of the total population of Europe and had a much worse effect.

"it seems safer when you hear stories like this."

Only if you have no information about flu. Actual flu, not a cold wrongly called flu.

Hey Folks, use your head on this one... the only way that we aren`t terribly afflicted as a population by high numbers of polio, rubella, measels ect ect is through vaccinations. I`ve treated people in impoverished countries where the vaccines available to us here aren`t available. The syptoms of these diseases are often misdiagnosed by american doctors for the simple fact that they rarely see the symptoms in their homelands. These diseases have high numbers of fatalities. THAT IS A FACT. Now think of how many people you know that have been vaccinated many times over for years. How many of them are severely dibilitated or dead because of a vaccination? Common sense says there are potential risks with all procedures, but the likelihood that those risks will be a reality in comparison to the chane that disease may occur without the vaccination is tenfold.

vaccines havent been proven to stop or prevent a flu virus from affecting you they are BULLpoo. i am not saying all vaccines are but the flu vaccine is, its a money making scam by drug companies. the flu vaccine only protects you from like 6 strains of the flu... there are literally thousands of flu strains, and it doesnt help your body build naturaly immunity... have fun when you are 67 years old dieing from flu. flu mutates way to fast for a vaccine to be widely effective

    Gameshow time.

You must choose to play one of the following games of Choose A Door:

    Game 1
There are a million doors before you. One of them is rigged to disable or even kill you. Behind the others is the rest of your life. Some will cause you mild discomfort for a short time.

    Game 2
There are 10,000 doors before you. One is rigged to disable or even kill you. Behind the others is the rest of your life. However, some doors will cause other people suffering and maybe even death. Possibly people you know and care about.

    Which game do you choose?

If you have flu-like symptoms, STAY HOME (unless they are severe enough to warrant a visit to the hospital). It`s pointless to go to a doctor for it. You`ll end up paying them money just so they can tell you "Yep, you have the flu." They can`t cure a disease caused by a virus. They can only prevent them. Sometimes.

    Oceanbeast:

Aren`t you aware that you have contradicted yourself?

You argue that flu vaccines don`t work at all because there are so many variations of the virus, which is very mutable. Which is wrong, by the way, because each year the virus is for the most common/most dangerous strains for that year and you gain some resistance to similar strains.

You also argue that if you gain immunity by catching flu rather than gain an immunity by having a vaccination, that works to protect you against flu for the rest of your life.

But if a vaccine was useless because it only works against 6 strains of flu, resistance gained from catching one strain of flu would would also be useless on the grounds that it only protects you from that one strain.

Fork vaccinations. Fork them with a spoon. If you`re too pussy to handle a flu, you deserve to have a flu for the rest of your life. It`s called washing your hands and not hanging around dirty, non-hygenic people. Doing those two things alone will give you better coverage than any vaccine, and they won`t give you damned seizures.

It is proven that the flu vaccine is an effective prophylactic against (yes only certain strains) the predicted most prevelant strains of the season. People don`t think it works because of the following reasons. 1) They get sick right after they get the shot. (These are symptoms caused by your body reacting to a deadened version of the flu, and you aren`t ill, just building antibodies)2) They get really sick during flu season even though they have the shot. (Most of these people have a cold, not the flu, or in more rare cases a flu strain that you were not vaccinated for.3) People get sick and die from the shot. (Extremely rare, and there are always potentially dangerous side effects from a medical procedure)
And for the kid who said it`s a money making scheme.. I`m from Canada and the government pays for most people to have it here. You may argue that it`s my tax dollars that pay for that to happen, but if the capitalists wanted to get my money wouldn`t they keep it in their pocke
