Moose get hit by cars. Usually it`s the moose that survives.

It may not even be as big as you think. I know here in Newfoundland the trees don`t always get very tall so that could be what`s happening here. Hey it could even be taken in Newfoundland.

"What is so surprising about this? Have people seriously never seen a moose before?"

I haven`t. I`m English - where would I see a moose? Maybe on TV, but (a) I watch very little TV and (b) there`s very little coverage of Canada in the TV over here.

I`m going to bet that this isn`t photo shopped. Firstly this looks like a male moose and judging by the foliage it`s either early fall or late spring, which both make sense. Mating season, or they`re coming down off the mountains because there`s snow on them and more food below. It also looks like a path, not a road, and the trees in very northern climates don`t tend to have a large trunk base considering the limited nutrients, so it`s hard to really compare the size of him to anything else.
I live in Anchorage and have to wait for moose to cross paths all the time or cross highways for that matter. This person is extremely lucky that the moose wasn`t territorial or he would have been running. Hopefully he or she was backing away when the picture was being taken.

@cman: according to Wikipedia, an adult moose is generally between 6 and 7 feet at the shoulder, with the tallest confirmed kill being 7`8".

So figure in that a one lane road like that will have about 6-7 feet across of dirt, I`d put the moose at a bit over 7 feet tall.

Elephants are definitely larger, usually about 10 or more feet at the shoulder.

Male 617
NO. no they don`t. they just don`t. they get big, but not like this. this is elephant big. moose never get bigger than a Clydesdale horse, and that`s big enough. i call shenanigans.

I know that driving through Maine, I read that you need to be especially careful about watching out for moose, even more so than with deer.

At least with deer, the headlights will hit their eyes. With moose, the headlights hit their legs or torso.

Absolutely correct. In fact, the further north you go, the less fertile the soil in general. So, the growth of those trees are stunted.

The more you know!

Sorry folks... SHOPPED... please note, as an animal becomes larger, it`s eyes become proportionately smaller... this moose has eyes the size of car headlights... also, for an animal to become as large as that, the legs / limbs also grow proportionately LARGER... that is to say, if I have a moose that`s 5x normal size, it`s legs might need to be as much as 10x thicker to accomodate the added weight! This sucker would collapse under its own weight on shattered legs... SHOPPED
