Judging from the opening in the barrel, I would say that these are probably .22s, and from the length of the cylinders, I would say .22 magnums. You can clearly see the tips of the bullets in two of the cylinders, in one of them you can even tell it`s a semi-wadcutter -- the type of round you would expect to find in a competition target pistol.
"1) The gun to his left is loaded; you can see the bullets in the cylinder. You can`t tell about the one on his right, but I suspect it is loaded as well.
2) Revolvers don`t have safeties. "
First off, I don`t know what kind of gun that is, but those are NOT bullets you can see in the cylinder in the gun on the right- they`re too small to be even .22s.
Second off, revolvers don`t have safeties because they`re inherently `safe`. A single-action needs the hammer to be pulled back before it can be fired, and a double-action takes a hell of a lot more effort than most weapons to pull the trigger.
tl;dr The guy is dumb but not necessarily about to kill himself.

It`s part of a Hindu (I think) ritual where people pierce themselves with odd objects and march in a processional to a temple. I have no idea what it`s about, but the guy here obviously doesn`t go around like that all the time. It`s part of a religious ceremony for him.
I`ve seen things like knives, swords, sticks, and bicycles put though the cheeks.
that is all...
