Submitted by: fancylad 7 years ago Science

He considers his body a "canvas" so he had doctors use his stem cells to grow an ear on his forearm. More pics within.

This is at least the second attempt this artist has made with this type of work. He had an earlier attempt with growing a human ear on a lab rat and surgically attaching it to his arm with a microphone beneath the skin. I know this because I have worked with another artist that builds Stellarc`s robots.

Hmmmn, you could implant his own ear if it got severed, to main the blood supply and whatnot, but they also may have used a biologically inert ear-shaped mesh as a template to grow cells upon to construct an ear-shaped replacement (like they did on the back of that mouse a few years back). Anyone who thinks you can grow stem cells into real body parts, please go to your doctor and ask him to grow you a new head. If you can read, start with hox (homeotic selector) genes (drosophila patterning would be a good place to start), then move on to epigenetics and protein and mRNA localisation/gradient formation. Then realise that this will probably not even happen in your lifetime.

If I remember correctly he had that ear grown on to replace one of his for some reason, I could be wrong but I thought I read that long time ago

This is an australian artist called Stelarc. He had a cell-grown ear created separately and then implanted it underneath his skin. He didn`t grow it on his body.

OR rather than growing an ear, just get one of those crappy implants in the shape of an ear

Stop being morons, all of you! He got it operated into his arm.

Anyone who seriously thinks this technology is possible today at a reasonable price is stupid. Stop interpreting South Park episodes as fact.

I`m no scientist... but wouldn`t injecting stem cells into your body open a potential gate for runaway cell growth (Ie tumors?) in a place you wouldn`t want it?
I mean... how could you be sure they`d all stay at the injection site?

Heh heh. People should put ears in their hands. Then that would give, "Talk to the hand" a whole new meaning.

He didn`t grow it, you r-tards. That technology hasn`t been properly applied yet.

What he did was implant a human ear under his skin. He also installed a microphone there, connected to a computer, so people could "hear" from his arm.

r-tards.

We`re a long, long way off flipantly injecting stem cells into artists and making them grow into something specific. If it had been described as an implant then it wouldn`t matter, but I`ll just have to throw "total bollocks" at it instead.
