I noticed I yawn a lot in my first two period classes. I think that it`s not that I`m tired, but having to listen to the teacher talk about absolutely nothing that has to do with the subject.

WTF? 6 things your body does.. EVERY DAY?

We don`t yawn and blush every day.
We certainly don`t go through puberty every day.
I don`t take a placebo every day.
And... pubic hair.. this doesn`t even make any sense....

Every day I.... `pubic hair`?

Or are they just telling us that every day, we all have pubic hair? How astute. Not.

Most lame thing I`ve ever clicked on on the internet. Ever.

I thought the dreaming was the most interesting fact that we do everyday, or should I say every night! Did you know that it`s not `sleep` as such that we crave, it`s dreaming? I never knew that until I did a paper on it in college. I did, learn a lot. Apparently, when one is, in REM stage sleep, that is when one dreams. Without dreaming, we wouldn`t feel so well-rested and relaxed.

Well put shinsvaka, though i would add that it being "random" or not knowing how it started is completely irrelevant to whether or not it is true.

Not knowing absolutely everything about something does not invalidate what you already do know.

"Dreams are created with expressions of our unconscious desires"! if that were true! i would have wet dreams everynight! sadlyt dreams are the information absorbed in the subconcious and all mixed together to try and make a story line!

yelling. like it meant that he was mad at us.. we now know that these types of things will have explanations in the future.. throught a thing called the scientific method. but i guess religions dont know a thing about that.. when you ask a christian why he believes in the bible he will say because it is the word of god.. then you ask him how he knows that. he will say because the bible is infallible. ask him why he belives that.. he will say because the bible tells us so... and so on and so on IN CIRCULAR LOGIC.... ok im done now.......

also, i love things from cracked.. they are awesome :P

"those characteristics are there because WE DIDN`T EVOLVE FROM APES."

Ugh, sorry for feeding trolls though... buuttttt.. Have you even studied Evolution? 3 things... Transition fossils. vitamin C. Andddddd, Chromosomes and DNA.. read up on these and you might find out WHY we pretty much know we evolved. AND GUESS WHAT?!?!?!? WE DIDNT EVOLVE FROM APES!!! we have a common ancestor, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh0F4FBLJ... (About what we evolved from and why there are still apes)
And before people get all pissy about how evolution says about chance and we dont have a clue how life came to earth.... Here is a little thing you people might wanna read up on, its called Abiogenesis. Also, those characteristics are there also because there are things left over from the evolutionary process. notice how other animals do these things.some things we cannot explain on this earth, but we shouldnt

"Yawning is caused with shortness of breath.. When your body doesn`t get enough oxygen, it gasps... Thus a yawn. =\"

*facepalm* wow... wow... *removes hand*
Ok lets just start by saying.... DID YOU EVEN READ THE F*CKING THING??? Here`s the explanation...." Your science textbook in elementary school may have said that low oxygen levels in the blood triggered yawning, with the yawn providing a quick influx of the gas. That was the prevailing theory going back to the days of ancient Greece. As is usually the case though, it turns out people from back in the day didn`t know what the hell they were talking about. In fact it`s been found yawning may actually decrease oxygen intake. Makes sense, when you do hard exercise you don`t start frantically yawning. You don`t see athletes yawning in the middle of a sprint."

"Sigh: Yawning is an automated method of regulating air pressure in your body. "

this makes a lot of sense, hence why you yawn on an airplane while climbing or descending elevations. and yeah, I was going to mention the ear popping. as for it being contagious, I`d think its a "brain sees someone else re pressurizing themselves and checks its own pressure", its not like its not already doing things like this on its own (eg breathing faster or deeper when oxygen levels get low).

NOW, how many of you yawned when reading that part? :)

"Relying on something that you can`t control to please the tribe leader back in primitive times seems like a good way to get yourself tossed in the volcano."

yeah, actually you don`t rely on blushing if its as you put it, its a trait to display dominance. best way to display dominance is not bravado, but rather with deeper emotions, maybe those that can`t be voluntarily controlled?

Everybody knows that we yawn to keep the spirits from escaping our bodies through our mouths and noses. We have pubes because our ancient ancestors used to braid them at slumber parties.

stupid... science already knows why we dream, its when your brain is storing past memories, thats why you should never study when your tired because then your brain wont store the memories as well.
and puberty already serves tons of purposes, wtf cracked? at least put research into this stuff.

First of all, my body is not going through adolescence every day. Thank Christ.

Secondly pubic hair is to trap smells, and thereby attract a mate. Anyone who has ever been with a woman who doesn`t garden will know the difference. I guess evolutionarily speaking, this was a way of getting a mate.

Placebo is fascinating. There are instances where people KNOW they are getting a placebo and the placebo still out performs the drug being tested and no drug at all.

"Dreaming is no longer much of mystery either. Scientists now know the exact chemical that makes dreams, which is related to memory (of which they can now wipe without affecting your ability to make new memories using a chemical which they tested on rats..ahem) anyway, it analyzes the information you received that day and replays it trying different scenarios (for the most part). Thus allowing you to make new and interesting connections in your sleep. The mystery is why we don`t remember them very clearly. "

Er, what?
Dreaming has a few theories.
There are three primary theories right now.
It`s still a pretty mysterious thing. The chemicalS associated with dreaming are more than just one. (DMT being a major one)

I think yawning is your body`s attempt to keep itself more awake and alert. You never yawn if you purposely lay down to sleep... only if your feeling sleepy but try to stay awake.

Shunpo is right that we didn`t evolve from apes. Remember that primitive ancestor they found last month that showed the common ancestor of modern apes and modern humans was not ape-like, as previously thought, nor was it human-like. It was something different entirely.

So, Shunpo is right, we didn`t evolve from apes. Humans and apes both evolved from a common ancestor that was neither an ape nor a human.

Yeah, Matwix is right. There are pretty good theories to explain the placebo effect. Like, they do not see a placebo effect if the subjects are given an endorphin blocker first. Real medicine still works even if natural endorphins are blocked, but placebos don`t. This proves that placebo treatment causes release of natural endorphins, which lead to the placebo effect.

Sigh: Yawning is an automated method of regulating air pressure in your body. Something your body is not great at, and if you notice someone else out of whack your body automatically checks its own pressure with its own yawn. Notice your ears pop when you yawn. The unknown is why it is linked to being tired. The leading theory being that you get a better nights sleep if you have equalized your pressure. (Thus the advantage of yawning, those who get better rest have an advantage in natural selection).
