wow, that would be awesome.....I want a full suit made out of the special spider silk (and if it is strong and more durable then Kevlar, I will be well protected then)

howitgoes: Then they`d have to sue and go through the regular channels of "Wronged Animal Cases" the line is pretty long, and I`ve seen some naked foxes in there before too.

Always such a bloody mess. Sad. :(

Does no one think of the spider`s rights? I bet they work 16 hours a day with little to no breaks. And I bet they don`t even receive health benefits!

    Appalling!

"I want a full suit made out of the special spider silk (and if it is strong and more durable then Kevlar, I will be well protected then)"

Not really. Spider silk has a higher *tensile strength* than Kevlar *of the same thickness*. If you`re looking for a very thin rope to hang from, spider silk wins. If you`re looking for armour, Kevlar wins.

Although it would be a cool suit.

... and if you`re looking for a building material, steel wins.

Unless you have astronomical amounts of money to burn and nothing to expect.

    spiders...UBER ick.

and by the way, it`s rather difficult to fully and accurately measure the mechanical and possibly even thermomechanical properties of spider silk, just because of its size.

what I would like to see is the compressive strength of spider silk, or observe it in a large-scale column buckling situation.

QUICK! someone find Poisson`s Ratio for spider silk!! twenty bucks to whoever finds it.

you probably dont even need it as thick they said it was stronger than kevlar and steel so it would probably stop bullets with a vest made of it that isnt as thick

That explains why Spidermans web was so strong and unbreakable - always wonder how strong that webbing really was.

So it will take 20 years for Western scientists to figure out how to mass produce webs and then what? Everyone else (enemies of the West) will have it a year after that - billions of dollars wasted?

"you probably dont even need it as thick they said it was stronger than kevlar and steel so it would probably stop bullets with a vest made of it that isnt as thick"

Spider silk, specifically dragline spider silk (spiders can make half a dozen different types of silk) has a *tensile strength* greater than steel. So if you made a rope from it and a rope from steel with the same thickness for each rope, the silk one could hold more weight before snapping. Which doesn`t say much for how it would cope with a bullet which would hit from the side of the threads, not along them.

Besides, there are synthetic materials with a high tensile strength than the strongest spider silk. For example, you can hang 150Kg off a 1mm thick strand of PBO.

Yeah, they modified genes in goat so the milk would have the base for a silk. They would then need to strain and treat the milk to have a workable material.

The Material was going to be used as a substitute for kevlar (among other things)
