Wow... Powerful stuff. PSAs aren`t usually that effective, but these new one`s we`re starting to see more of really are. It seems the brutal reality hurts. "Mummy, daddy, wake up", imagine having to tell them they never will... I`m all depressed now.

I don`t know if I`m just a masochistic jerk or something, but when I saw the inside of the helicopter view I immediately thought of how ironically funny it would be if the pilot started texting. :/

And yeah. This PSA is one of the better ones in terms of showing how real the danger is. I agree that even though it`s graphic, this is something that should definitely be shown in driving school.

These really piss me off. This incident isn`t just isolated to texting, it could be any traffic accident. Falling asleep at the wheel, drunk driving, whatever. Just because the cause is texting in the video doesn`t mean texting always causes it, or even does even close to half of the time.

This is the equivalent of those commercials asking for donations to the humane society and showing a beaten dog with puppy eyes staring helplessly at the screen. It might work, but it`s still a crock of poo. Not all dogs are cute. Not all texting causes horrifying traffic accidents.

lol @ elderban, you must not have had your TV or radio on for at least two weeks now! This is most definitely a British PSA. I heard about this on CNN`s XM channel where all I could heard was the bone-crunching sound and crying. It chilled me then, and even more when I saw the actually video.

Imjesus - TEXTING IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF CAR CRASHES. IT OUTWEIGHS DRUNK DRIVING.

Now that I`ve embarassed someone over the internet, I saw this in driver`s ed just last week.

Oh, Imjesus. Let`s see you drive while texting, okay? From what I know you`re in the age range 13-17, so you`re probably 13 and THINK you can text and drive. You can`t. When you go through driver`s ed, you`ll learn.

how come the only survivor is always the person who caused the accident? weak.

my favorite psa was one where the driver was drunk and drove through the garden fence and ran over a little kid who was playing soccer with his sister. because that happens a lot.

alimander - please do, a good friend of mine died in a fire ball of a Golf GTi on the M6 just over a year ago, TXTing whilst over taking a HGV, According to to police investigator, a txt was sent from his phone .4 of a second afore he had to brake to avoid the HGV suffering a burst tyre, he got wiped out, when it crushed him against the crash barriers. CCTV and GPS pin pointed his situation, and he never stood a chance, if he wasnt TXTing he would have caught the situation and be here now

This is the kind of shock video they need to convince people not to text while driving - you shouldn`t even talk on your phone unless you use an earbud or speaker phone. It`s illegal here in California.

I still see people using their phones to their ear or texting when they drive - I try to stay away from them.

"This is boring. I would have changed the channel had this come on. 4:15? Who would sit through that?"

Someone without the attention span of a gnat perhaps?

Watching it closely, I can`t figure out the course of events; the third car in the accident, the red one, seems to be driving on the wrong side of the road, and the small blue one seen passing at 0.38 also seems to be driving on the right hand side.

"These really piss me off. This incident isn`t just isolated to texting, it could be any traffic accident."

Imjesus, the point of the PSA isn`t to say that texting is the only cause of this kind of accident; why on earth would you think it is, and why would that even be important?

The message is that texting can, and does, lead to this kind of accident, and is one of the easily-avoidable causes. Duh, of COURSE not all texting causes this kind of accident, but it can, and this PSA shows the very real aftermath it can cause.

The point? Showing people that their "harmless" distractions can have very, very serious consequences, very quickly; ten seconds of distraction, followed by a lifetime of agony and regret...at least for the survivors. THAT is the point; that texting while driving is a SERIOUS danger, and shouldn`t be taken lightly.

Imjesus, it doesn`t matter that "Not all texting causes horrifying traffic accidents". The fact of the matter remains, they increase the liklihood of a crash.

Anything that raises awareness about these possibilities in such a effective manner should be respected.

Oh, Madest, 4 minutes is really not that long, if it makes a few people think again about texting whilst driving then i couldn`t care less that you found it boring.

Completely true. Mindless self-regarding blonde tarts in Kas, new Beetles with flowers on the dashboard and New Minis. Might as well be wearing a hooded cape and carrying a scythe. Brighton is literally full of them, and they cut you up left, right and centre. Worse than skunked up chavs in souped up Novas (which we also have hundreds of). Avoid unless driving a large articulated truck, in which case "engage".

I just don`t understand why ANYONE would text while driving... TALKING on the phone is distracting enough.

Graphic and heart-wrenching, but if it makes someone who texts while they`re behind the wheel think twice, then please give us more of this.

this was hilarious...sunshine of my love playing while girls get amuled by a car crash, advertisment for the new tom jones film....advertisment for the special effects and teh fact despite hitting her head against every sharp edge on the passenger side, her neck snaps when the car stops.

also if anything the other car was at fault too. that girl was straying across teh road a full 10 secs before he hit her. reaction tme is less tahn a second. he could have easily swerved to avoid her, pulled over and called 999.

and the story of the guy that got mauled by a HGV while on a phone, there was no way he could avoid a 10 ton lorry, who burt a tire from swerving into him and making a pancake outa his ass, even if he was alert and sure as hell not if he wasnt in a supercar...

im sorry for ya loss but dont go blaming the text he sent.

"Oh, Madest, 4 minutes is really not that long, if it makes a few people think again about texting whilst driving then i couldn`t care less that you found it boring."

Unfortunately, it`s morons like Madest with REALLY short attention spans that do that stupid crap.

The problem is, it IS long, so the people that actually bother watching it all the way through probably don`t text and drive as is.

The people who walk out to grab a soda, or just fast foreward through this, are the ones likely to do this sh*t.

And the world is cultivating a generation of those morons who will just fast foreward through it on their DVR, or (ironically enough) text until the PSA`s over.

ALSO, I remember there being a controverst over a whole bunch of people thinking this was "too graphic."

Well, f*cktards, you`re not gonna get people to stop doing something with a bunch of bunnies flying out and cuddling them when they do it, now are you?

"Didn`t they just pass a law on Sept. 1 making it illegal if you`re under the age of 18 to talk on a cellphone and drive? My government teacher was telling us about it."

I don`t think so, there are limitations in some states but no outright bans unfortunately. It should be though considering you`re four times more likely to get in an accident if you`re talking on your cellphone, and that`s just talking. I can`t even imagine what it is for texting..

    -snip-

    ------------

I don`t text while driving and I walked away from the video. It`s uncomfortable and it really wouldn`t make me want to stop doing something because its so long, more so it makes me want to get into the accident just to stop the discomfort. a PSA shouldn`t be so long, you loose interest and the point is moot.

I admire the attempt they made at showcasing why you shouldn`t text, it holds a powerful message. But it really didn`t need to be so long. They could have cut out a lot and still gotten the same message accross without using up 4 minutes, but more like 130.. or even 45 seconds. Short. Sweet. And to the point.

At first I thought it was kind of funny when they were getting tossed around in the car, but it was pretty disturbing after that. The violence doesn`t bother me, more just how they acted.
But this kind of accident happens every single day, regardless of texting. You`d think that instead of blaming texting, they`d blame the fact that cars are basically death boxes and you`re an idiot for making something already horribly dangerous even worse.

So apparently everyone whose died as a result of texting are just stupid people and you`re better than them? If you were smart in any way, you wouldn`t be texting while driving to begin with.
I don`t really care if you die. I hope you do, you deserve it for being stupid. But chances are you`ll take innocent people down with you, and you don`t have that right just because you`re addicted to texting. I hope some one manages to kill you first before you kill some one who isn`t as worthless as you.

Abacab, I don`t know about in the US, but in Canada you actually have to ask permission to give first aid, even if they are obviously unconcious. Silly, I know, but they have every right to refuse medical aid if they want to, otherwise they can charge you with assault.

    Fair enough, but:

    A. It`s unlikely someone would sue you for checking his or her pulse without his or her permission.

    B. I was mainly talking about the paramedics. Maybe I missed it, but I didn`t see ONE paramedic check anyone`s pulse.

Texting and driving in stupid as hell! Nothing is so important that it can`t wait for you to stop driving before texting or if it is... then pull over into a gas station and park first.

And in the states, even if the person has the words "Do not resperate" tattooed on their chest, the paramedics are still required to give you medical attention and to keep you alive as long as possible, any way possible. Your unconsciousness automatically gives them permission to work on you.

I personally think anyone who texts and drives at the same time should have their legs removed. Thumbs too, just to make their texting harder. Every time someone even thinks about doing that while I`m in the car, I take their phone and sit on it until we`re parked somewhere. I can barely stand someone talking on the phone, but texting is just a new level of stupidity.

@iHZOi: Of course it`s fake! It`s a public service announcement. Didn`t you read the description? Nobody has ever claimed this was real footage. The "special effects provided by..." bit should have tipped you off.

@TKD Master: I realize people are going to continue to do terribly irresponsible things no matter how dangerous they are, but I urge you to reconsider. Maybe you`ll be the only one in critical condition in your car, but what about the passengers in the car(s) you may slam into? Also, you don`t want the tickets. In some states texting while driving is now a felony.

"yep. i`m still going to text and drive. i won`t do it with passengers in my car though."

Like I said to Brown Sugar, I hope some one kills you before you kill some one less worthless than you. You have no right to live if you don`t respect the lives of others.

Well spotted. I reviewed the video, and you`re right...no blood!

I`m thinking this whole thing was probably staged by the government in an attempt to bring the cellular carriers in line with their tyrannical tax policies.

Have to honestly say that`s the best PSA I`ve seen. Well done Wales.

The only thing is, I couldn`t work out where I know the guy in the blue shirt from. I know he`s in a soap but I can`t work out which one. It`s really annoying me now.

@inkjunkie - we in the UK also have to ask permission. There has been one case where the first aider asked permission, got no response and provided CPR. Victim`s family then tried to sue because the guy was trying to commit suicide and didn`t want first aid help. Courts threw the case out with contempt - the guy couldn`t specify that he didn`t want the help. Had he been able to respond and said "I don`t want help" the first aider would have had to walk away.
We also tap the shoulder in case the person is deaf and unable to respond to verbal prompts.

Well when she was texting she literally never looked at the road. I know from texting and driving experience that you don`t even have to look at the phone except for the quick glance right before you send.

hmm, while I`ll admit the initial accident is totally plausible... why did that secondary accident happen? That car had a looooooooooong gap until it hit, and it was on a straight away. Did the driver see the first accident and yell "Zomg Dog pile! me too!"

That car could easily have taken out his own phone, twittered "I just saw a car accident!", switched to camara mode, and still have time to come to a nice easy stop and take some pictures.

I understand the "trying to get a message across" thing. But, GOD DAMN. This is pretty gruesome.

But, that aside, who is that bad of a driver to veer off of the road on a straight away? I mean come on. I consider myself an average driver and
even I could avoid that accident.

In addition, yeah the "mommy, daddy wake up." was some of the worst acting I`ve ever seen.

Fantastically realistic, one of the best shock advertisements I`ve ever seen.

@Fehz, it wouldn`t be a very good ad if she noticed and swerved back into her lane... For it to work well it`d have to be pretty shocking, and I think they pick the right level.
