I just want to point out that while I agree that the US is wrong here, the stats given in the rebuttal are stats about the whole country, while the Fox "News" people are talking only about the city. I could say all sorts of bad things about New York City (DON`T TAKE OFFENCE--NYC RULES) and the crime/drug rate there, without it having anything to do with the crime/drug rate in the entire country.

Anyone who actually watches the O`Reilly factor would remember when O`Reilly actually PLAYED this clip on his show and commented about it. It`s true, Amsterdam is the organized crime capital of Europe. Deal with it. They just juxtapose the nicest images you could possibly find in Amsterdam with someone explaining the organized crime situation. And yes, organized crime is different than regular crime..

And please don`t call it Faux news, it makes you sound pathetic and partisan. They`re still the only ones who would report on multiple ACORN offices encouraging an underage sex-slave trade. So please.

A difference needs to be address here: Fox news represented the "American side" whereas a civilian represented Amsterdam`s side. Media is bias, especially Fox News. If an individual who lived in USA made a video concerning Amsterdam`s laws, you would find some major differences in thought.

    America`s media doesn`t necessarily reflect America`s people.

But you all knew this and this video is just for fun.

err, Europeans, Bill O`Reily doesn`t speak for all of us Americans so please stop pretending he does. He is an idiot, and the lowest of intelligence over here are the ones who tune into his show. So don`t make yourselves look stupid by assuming something like that.

That said, I love the video, but if you watch Bill`s response to the video, you will likely be frustrated, as he basically just says that all the information presented in it was false for some reason he that he doesn`t clarify.

The Netherlands` drug policies aren`t indicative of the other countries within Europe. For instance, here in the UK the laws on drugs are pretty tight without any independent evidence to back them up. The government`s own drug tsar stated that he thought cannabis should be decriminalised - so the government said he didn`t know what he was talking about.

If they thought he didn`t know what he was talking about, why did they place him in the highest job to do with their drugs policy?

The real reason they said it, is that he didn`t toe the line and just say what they wanted him to say.

I`ve lived in both the Netherlands and Spain, and their drug policies are much more effective at targetting the harder drugs and having a reasonable response to less harmful ones like cannabis.

In Spain for instance, the drug policies effectively encourage weed smokers to grow their own, as both possession and cultivation have been decriminalised for personal use, whilst buying or selling it a

    Unbelievable.

Leave it to Bill O`Reilly and FOX News to spread disinformation.

After the first Gulf War, I traveled to Europe to unwind for a couple of weeks, and ended up living and working in the Netherlands for six months.

It was relatively clean, quiet, and most of all peaceful. I worked as a doorman at a club, and had far fewer problems than I did at ANY club I worked at in the U.S.

I can personally vouch for the fact that most of the drug-related problems (and there weren`t very many) are caused by young German, British and American tourists who arrive in the Netherlands with the mistaken impression that "anything goes" in Amsterdam. One of my roommates was a Dutch girl who worked in another club until late at night on the other side of the city, and she could ride her bike home at 2am with no fear of being bothered or accosted by anyone. There is NO urban area in the United States where that would be possible.

I have to side with Europe on this one.

Holland - Likes love and sex. hates guns and violence.
USA - Loves guns and violence, hates love and sex.
Holland - Encourages free thought, intellectualism and individualism.
USA - Discourages free thought and individualism, a tribal mentality is needed to be pro-constitution, as are certain central dogmas whether true or untrue, encourages indoctrination and stupidity (e.g. USA is the greatest country in the world and I will fight to the death blah blah" f@rting cr@p out of slack faces.
    Dutch movies: Portray ordinary people.
Dutch Reality: Lots of tall stunning blonds/blondes on the streets.
US movies: Full of tall stunning blondes.
US reality: lots of overweight "ordinary looking" people on the streets.

US has a huge inferiority complex. This is why they have to continually xenophobically stereotype and attack the rest of the World while spouting hilarious dogma about being the best country in the World.

Video omits several facts. The crime rate has gone up in Amsterdam recently, And many "Head shops" have been forced to close.

Amsterdam may have better statistics than the USA (overall) and it is still a nice place. This video though, Didn`t refute the headlines being made there though.

First off, I refuse to deprecate myself or my country because there are some a-holes across the pond with a bone to pick. The USA, as with your country, is full of people with opinions; opinions which they are free to espouse. I`m sure Amsterdam is a nice place that has its own issues. Osiris, there are many urban areas in the US where one could feel safe, you just haven’t been there obviously.

Max, the US doesn`t have an inferiority complex, we`re merely tired of trying to explain ourselves to those whom we saved repeatedly from themselves over the years and whose economies we supplemented so that they could create these wonderful utopias they believe they have; oh, and thanks for buying into the stereotypes and showing us all you level of intelligence.

As far as stats on murder per capita and drugs, Indonesia has some of the world`s most strict laws and their murder rate is .009 versus Holland`s .011. So nice try tho. BTW, you don`t need drugs to have an enriched life.

Lets face it, banning pot and legalising guns is just plain damn insane. Amsterdam is a lovely city, much safer than many others, if not Utopia. At least you don`t have to worry about getting shot. it`s not as though the US has NO drug or gang problems of its own. Bill Reilly sounds like a fool- I pity you for having him on air. I have found most Americans to be sensible liberal people, it is just that vociferous right wing morons like him give the rest of you a bad name.

As per some points made; Amsterdam does have one of the highest crime rates in the country. Nonetheless, that`s not saying much as most Dutch cities are (relatively) very safe. A large part of the problems in Amsterdam is due to a substantial part of the population are immigrants from a less rosy socio-economical background. roughly 45% of the population is does not have a Dutch background, something which greatly adds to the multicultural character. Furthermore, people should not confuse headshops with coffeeshops. Coffeeshops sell hash and marijuana, and very few are being closed. Headshops sell hallucinogenics, such as sclerotia and (before the ban) magic mushrooms. More of these are being closed due to past problems with tourists mixing drugs. One of the largest causes of problems in the city is, not surprisingly, tourists who go to amsterdam for a weekend fuelled with drugs, sex, and music, so to speak. The link between prostitution and organised crime is rather accurate however.

Location, location, location. It`s true. For instance, if the people who did 9\11 had targeted the fox news building instead of all the buildings they did hit, they would now be national heroes and champions of justice and freedom, not enemies.

Common decency forced laws that made packs of smokes come with warning labels, they should make Fox give constant warnings that they are NOT a news program, but an entertainment program. Claiming to be news is just a flat out lie.

The problem that a lot of you are overlooking in your posts is, fox news proclaimed that the entire country was wrong, not just Amsterdam, and yes, given the huge tourist destination it is, there are going to be a few problems. But then like us Americans do, we group one city with the entire country.

TheSharpest, the reason that this show is allowed to present stirring controversy instead of facts is because it is more of an opinion-based show.

OMG - I hate the O`Reilly factor! Another reason I hate Fox News. And the scary thing is that a lot of people that watch these more opinion-bases news shows believe everything they hear, as if it`s real news. Sometimes people forget that they can`t believe everything they hear... it`s sad.

Fox isn`t the only one that is reporting on this. Just because someone on IAB is anti-Fox doesn`t mean everything they say is false.

A lot of people fail to realize or even understand that fox news is an entertainment channel, NOT a news channel. When you report news, you don`t interject your opinion. And you certainly don`t do so in such an inflammatory manner. Fox news is the jerry springer of "news" and should be held in exactly the same regard.

I`m getting a bit tired of seeing this same footage replayed with so many different responses. Since I don`t watch Fox News it seems like the only time I ever hear anything about them is when they`ve done something retarded or gotten their `facts` wrong.

Although, this time I`m not so sure they`ve gotten them completely wrong, just skewed them a bit. I`ve read pieces from a few online sources talking about how they want to change the way its obtained so that its harder for tourists to obtain, like using banks cards only but allowing the cafes to stock more.

How to say this without starting a Flame War?? However I say it, most of you are going to be offended, but here is a Reality Check - flame all you want, but its about time someone said it.

You love America, you say its the best country in the world, you say you lead the world in everything, and your President is the #1 man in the world.

    None of this is true.

Everywhere else, you`re "just" America. You`re just one more country, and a fairly warmongering one at that. Sure we love your TV shows and goods, just like we love cheap Asian goods. But no-one outside the US considers it to be the "best" country, not by a long shot. You have problems that many other countries have totally eliminated. Your President is seen as just another leader of a country, not *THE* man. Your social security system sucks, and your healthcare is even worse. You`re a nation so blind to itself that the rest of the world just laughs at the poor little Yanks thinking they`re so special.

That`s not to say that America is a rotten place, it has many good qualities, like all countries. But nobody sees you, or your country, the way you think they do.

There are many parallels between modern America and Nazi Germany, I`m not even going to go into them the list is so long. But look at the blind faith, the absolute sense of rightness and destiny, the interfering with other nations, of Germany prior to WW2, and you`ll see it.

No offense. Seriously. Us Aussies are all about "She`ll be right, live and let live". But come down a peg or two and open your eyes, and stop thinking America is the Prom Queen. It isn`t, its just another student in the hall.

i`d still much rather be living here in the us. Thats why we moved from Europe (Brussels to be exact). Our last tax bracket there was 76% (we got to keep a fourth of our paycheck, how wonderful) and crime was awful. The video compares homicide and drug overdoses but burglary, theft, and assault are all higher anywhere in Europe.
That being said, I`m pretty sure the world would be a lot better off if our governments stopped playing with its citizens lives as well as other nations. Let us be.

"I`m not sure how TV works in the States, but shouldn`t they present facts instead of stirring controversy out of nowhere? I`m at a loss."

It`s about bums on seats. The sole point of TV for profit is to gain more viewers, which results in more profit. Controversy does that better than facts.

The person who made this video missed the sex thing entirely - the shocking horror (according to Fox) of teaching children about sex and having very liberal attitudes towards sex appears to have worked rather well in the Netherlands, directly contradicting the claims Fox made.

Getting back to recreational drugs - the bottom line is the bottom line. There`s more profit when it`s illegal.

@bingo; I`d agree with the military power, however there are a handful of countries that are able to virtually obliterate the world, so which one of them has *more* power is not relevant. As to wealth i`d disagree with that. The US is debt-ridden, and does not rank in the top-10 of the Quality of Life index or the Human Development Index. Not everyone measures wealth by income. America has numerous natural resources, but so do numerous other nations. As to the beauty of the country, that is solely based on opinion, and as such not a valid argument. On the education note, the United States does not have an impressive secondary education system. However, there are many excellent universities in the US, as well as some of the worst ones. This is not intended as an attack on the US, rather it`s meant to illustrate that what many hold to be fact, is often just opinion. So this is my opinion, not facts ;)

That article explains that the authorities have prevented any legal supply of cannabis to coffeeshops.

If the authorities prevent legal supply, of course it results in illegal supply. If they wish to prevent the illegal supply, they just have to allow legal supply. The policy they`re applying undermines itself and is therefore foolish.

"America has given the world so much and were unappreciated by most and hated by some. You name it, we`ve either invented it or improved it."

I`d bet good money that nearly everything that you think was invented in the USA was invented in the UK or Europe, probably the UK. The USA may have improved manufacturing processes for many of them, though. But probably not as much as Japan did.

The USA is a very large, very powerful country founded on noble (but still extremely flawed) principles that it usually fails to live up to because it`s full of people rather than saints.

In many ways it`s pretty similar to the British empire and like the British empire it has a lot of everything, good, bad and indifferent. Or the Roman empire, going back a bit further.

As do the inventions and research of every other nation on earth, America has no special dominance there, and in fact, per capita, produces far less than many other countries in both goods and research. So you don`t need to be lectured by an Australian, eh? You racist. Half your medicine comes from Australian research, the CSIRO contributed heavily to the development of the internet, and we invented movies.

Anyway this is not meant to be an Us vs Them topic, there is much I admire about the US - in fact, the #1 thing is precisely WHY you are arguing - because you are PROUD to be American. The #1 thing I admire about the US is their national pride and showing of the flag everywhere they can - here in Aus, you are not likely to see more than 1 Aussie flag in your typical day, and even then only if you walk past the Council Chambers.

The point of the IAB post is that Europe is doing it better than the US in many ways, and that is unarguably true. Aus isn`t Europe, but go to the Aust Govt Social Security page, browse through the SS payments you get as an individual or couple, with or without children, for having no job - and this is time-unlimited. It is the BASE income all Australians can rely on, 24/7, every day of their life. In addition to free doctor, dentist, hospital, etc.

"So you don`t need to be lectured by an Australian, eh? You racist."

"Australian" is a nationality, not a race. If you believe in the concept of race(*), you`d have to put most people in the USA and most people in Australia in the same race.

    * It is a matter of belief, because it`s not supported by biology. It`s an artificial construct.

"If America didn`t invent postal service the stamp wouldn`t be necessary."

Off the top of my head: the Romans had a postal service 2000 years before the USA existed. Britain and Europe had postal services long before the creation of European colonies in America.

"Oliver Evans designed the refrigerator he was American."

Yes, but William Cullen did it over 50 years earlier. He was Scottish.

"We invented electricity for your drill."

That is so silly that I don`t even need to debunk it.

"Without our invention of the submarine your torpedo would be worthless..."

Torpedoes can be fired from ships, but that`s an aside. The submarine was invented by a Dutchman long before the USA existed.

"I could do this to each item in your list."

Please continue to so clearly demonstrate the point I made earlier:

I`d bet good money that nearly everything that you think was invented in the USA was invented in the UK or Europe, probably

Madest makes a fair point, to each of these claims there is a counter. No single invention is the product of one country/person, but an accumulation. For example, the concept of postal services had been around long before most modern nations existed, A Scotsman pioneered artificial rerigeration, an American designed a regrigeration machine, and an Australian first used vapour-compression. The concept of electricity and the `discovery` thereof was made in England, A Frenchman and a German made further discoveries, and an American made the link between lighting and electricity. The first submarine was made in the UK, the first military one in the US. I don`t many things listed so far are isolated inventions.

"The Brits could ask you to be grateful for the WWW"

I think the programmable electronic computer would serve as a more important example for a relatively recent invention. Or the jet engine. Or controllable supersonic planes. Or maybe the steam engine that made the industrial revolution (and thus nearly all modern technology) possible.

I use the term in the normal way its used these days, on IAB and elsewhere. A "N" for example, is only from a single tribe of the Niger River region - there are tens of thousands of black "nationalities" in Africa but when someone says you`re a racist because you used the N word, he isn`t implying it was just against that one tribe, but against all those who share the same national origin.

"Exactly the sort of blindness I`m talking about. Let`s break down your claims:

America has more military power > No (China)
    wealth > No (Qatar)
and political influence > Yes, possibly
most natural resources > No (Russia)
some of the most beautiful land > No (Mid-Europe)
and the worlds greatest learning institutions > No (Japan)

    To be fair:

America has more military power > No, but more than Europe (that`s the discussion, right?)

wealth > No, but more than any single country in Europe (just a guess, plus it`s not fair to compare continent to country)

and political influence > Yes, possibly
most natural resources > No, but more than Europe, unless your only talking about the part of Russia in Europe (Russia)
some of the most beautiful land > Opinion, plus he said "some" so you can`t deny that (Mid-Europe)
and the worlds greatest learning institutions > Well, an awful lot of Japanese come to our college

@Moohshoo, dude the topic was amsterdam, not any other city. I was pointing out that I don`t take someone with some simple editing skills and a camcorder`s word for it.

@Sonikku, if you actually read some of the news websites, the fact that weed is legal in Amsterdam has everything to do with it. Apparently a person can only carry possess 30 grams of weed at a time. And it is illegal to sell and buy weed.
So where does it come from?

    http://www.dutchamsterdam.nl/686-amsterdam-coffeeshops-organized-crime
Now for those of you who can`t comprehend what you are reading, why doesn`t the guy that made this video attack his own countrymen? Why doesn`t he attack MSNBC, or NYTimes who both ran stories about organized crime and its link to the legalization of weed and the red light district?

The main problem with drugs in Amsterdam isn`t that they`re legal; it`s that they`re still ILLEGAL everywhere else. They still have to be supplied by a criminal black market. Do you think they just hand them across the boundary and go away? Did anyone actually think it would be a good idea to concentrate every unemployable druggie in the country in one place?

I`m a proponent of legalization, but what Amsterdam did was not legalization, it was "ghettoization." The fact that it failed so miserably and predictably is now being used to discredit legalization, which is a shame. Drug prohibition is killing thousands of people around the world and costs $trillions. All we have accomplished is to give a monopoly to organized criminals and terrorists who are using their money and power to corrupt the entire world.

"I use the term in the normal way its used these days, on IAB and elsewhere."

That would be as a general accusation to be used against a person you disagree with, a weapon to silent dissent by smearing the dissenter personally.

"A "N" for example, is only from a single tribe of the Niger River region"

Wrong. `niger` is the Latin word for `black` and has the same meaning in a racial context.

" - there are tens of thousands of black "nationalities" in Africa but when someone says you`re a racist because you used the N word, he isn`t implying it was just against that one tribe, but against all those who share the same national origin."

Wrong. The word has never had anything to do with nationality.

Lionhart: I don`t think that strong (or blind) patriotism is a good quality in anyone. I certainly don`t like seeing it here. Distrust in our government is a pretty healthy sentiment. Besides, generally when I see an Australian flag wagged about it represents exclusion (from different races within our country to other nations).

Besides that the US is a pretty insular country which I think is where much of their patriotism comes from. It is my least favourite part of their culture. Not trying to bash on the US as I know a lot of people who live there are not like that but there are large numbers of idiots in every country and thats the direction the US`s idiots have moved in.

Lion, thank you! It drives me nuts when my friends and family walk around talking about how we`re the best country ever and all the other countries are just jealous of how awesome we are. Did it never cross their minds that we`re just so haughty and full of ourselves that it drives everyone nuts? Or that we culturally impose ourselves on other nations?

I love so many things about the US, but I`m glad China is growing, I`m glad this recession happened. Americans need a serious reality check. What exactly do we have that makes us better *people*?

America isn`t the first to rise and she won`t be the last to fall. When our time comes to take a bow, we`ll overcome the ugly doings of our past and nourish the beautiful ones. We won`t be the Queen Bee, but then our pride will be from love rather than arrogance.

You have a far better government than China, that`s for sure. I`m not glad that China is growing with its current system of rule. I`d rather have the USA as the dominant world power than China as it currently is. The USA is of course imperfect, but the people who set it up really tried to get the government right. Although the people who set the Roman republic up put even more checks and balances on political power and look how that turned out.

what I`m trying to say, is that when you legalize something (and I mean legalize, i.e. legalize buying and selling, not "legalize" possesion), the organized crime disappears, of course. there`s no reason for mafia to handle bussiness that is legal. there`s no organized crime around cigarettes, for example. you don`t have to build a mafia if you wanna deal in something legal, you just start a company.

FOX, on the other hand, says something exactly opposite, if I understand it right.

@Seaker: The maximum allowed to be carried is 5 grammes, not 30. To address a common misconception; Weed is not actually legal in the netherlands, it is a `controlled` substance. Officials have a set of guidelines in which offenders will not be prosecuted.

The amount of coffee shops being closed is a lot less than the media lets on. The `refurbishing` of the city image with the crackdown on organised crime is taking place almost solely in the red light district,a relatively small area.

@ Sonikku: there`s a huge market for the mafia regarding cigarettes. Really wrong example to use unfortunately.

As long as a lot of money is involved (ie for cigarettes excises, huge amounts of it), it`s perfect for criminals to either steal truckloads and sell it or just counterfeit known brands with truly inferior products (adding god knows what products to it, making them even worse than they are now) and make huge profits on it.

oh my. ok. Fox is trying to make it seem that legalization leads to crime rate increase. that crime is something inherent to drug production. ok?

now, drug gangs take the risk of fighting the police and not paying taxes. that`s the difference between a firm and a drug gang. why do they do that? well, because drug business is illegal! if it was legal, like baking bread is, then there`d be no reason for criminals to be involved in the process of production. of course, they would still steal things, but that`s not what we`re talking about here.
