2001: A Space Oddity (As Performed by Kids)

It"s impressive that so many people can play for so long without ever hitting the right note, even by accident.

This isn`t a school-It`s the Portsmouth Sinfonia, info from Wikipedia:
"The Portsmouth Sinfonia was a real orchestra founded by a group of students at Portsmouth School of Art in Portsmouth, England, in 1970 — however, the Sinfonia had an unusual entrance requirement. Players had to be either non-musicians, or if a musician, play an instrument that was entirely new to them. Among the founding members was one of their teachers, English composer Gavin Bryars. The orchestra started as a one-off, tongue-in-cheek performance art ensemble but became a cultural phenomenon over the following ten years, with concerts, record albums, a film and a hit single. They last performed publicly in 1979."
So it`s sort of a joke, but not really...

The name of the piece is actually "Also Sprach Zarathustra", composed by Richard Strauss in 1896, and it was based on Nietzche`s book of the same name.

I know this because one of my friends texted me and made me look it up for him for a test. My friends like me.

People have paid good money to see Portsmouth Sinfonia. Brian Eno was even interested enough to play clarinet (he didn`t know how, like the rest of the members) and he produced their first two albums.

That being said, No, I don`t like it either, but I have been part of many jam sessions where we traded instuments so we were playing one we didn`t know. Of course when only 3 or 4 people are doing it on rock instruments, it doesn`t come out nearly so horrible.

Man, this is why I hated school band concerts. Even worse was that the parents had to pretend to clap like it sounded great and they were proud, when in reality they were wishing they could stab an icepick into their ear to make it stop.

Three points
1. the film is called "2001: A Space Odyssey"

2. the song is called "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" named for the Friedrich Nietzsche book.

3. "Space Oddity" is a David Bowie song about the fictional character Major Tom. Has nothing to do with this song.

BTW, this is not kids playing. It`s the Portsmouth Sinfonia, comprised only of non-musicians and musicians on unfamiliar instruments. They are making their best efforts, however (not a comedy group). In some respects, they were taken seriously as an experimental group. Gone since the 70`s.

They hit SOME notes correctly, but their timing is what sucks, and they need to learn to rest properly, they took breaths in the wrong spots; and they need to use their diaphragms. The trumpets and flutes are what is dreadful.
