I really respect Adobe, I think they produce excellent software and when I get a job I might even buy some of it, but sometimes they can be complete tools. Using `photoshop` as a popular verb to describe image manipulation is a good thing for brand awareness, why get all fussy about how people use it? You`re not our dratin english teachers... jeez.

There just trying not loose their trademark like xerox. Other companies can`t use it, but TV and movies can just say "Go make a xerox" without having to consider any trademark status. Once a word goes into common use like that, you can no longer claim a copyright. Coca-Cola will send lawyers to a restaurant if the employees refer to all sodas as "coke".

    Amazingly, this is actually real.

However, While a company may be able to trademark a product name, The trademark has no legal standing in use of the word in language. And If adobe were to take you to court over saying "That`s shopped" The judge would laugh, and throw it out of court.

Xerox had a similar advertising struggle back in the late 80`s and early 90`s. They didn`t want people to say "I just had this Xeroxed", mainly because trademark names only earn them royalties so long as they are not popular slang terms. If people continued to use "Xerox" as a verb or noun rather than as an adjective describing the technology, they would be losing money.

Similarly, Adobe stands to lose money on this if people continue to use Photoshop as a verb or noun rather than as a product. Obviously they don`t want that, so they mount this aggressive advertising campaign. Sure, it makes them look terrible in the public eye, but royalty fees are apparently more important to them than, as MagicPaul would put it, "brand awareness". How is it brand awareness if one uses it as a verb, since many other software can also "photoshop" in the same sense?

So basically they`re trying to get people on the Internet, globally recognized as the Masters of the English Language in terms of spelling and grammar, to stop saying "`SHOPPED!!1", and instead use "This image was manipulated using Adobe® Photoshop®"?
Sounds like a killer idea, Mr. Adobe. I`m sure you`ll make it happen.

    Time to dork out:
I am a Technical Communicator by profession, and these are actually incredibly helpful. They have one for every product. As many noted the company uses them for trying to avoid "Xerox" related copyright/trademark problems. I can think of several times where I have used these pages on the Adobe site to make sure I was using the name of one of their products correctly in a technical document. They do look strange when you see them on their own though....

I don`t think there`s any way they can definitely change the way people use the term. I think it`s all just being correct in professional documents and such. There are thousands of other instances where using casual and common language in a formal document just won`t cut it.

I mean, as a company, I would give loads to have, for example, the act of enhancing and modifying a picture digitally referred to as ed. It`s subliminal, it`s free. Why try to step away from that?

It sounds stupid, but they have to do this, otherwise they can lose the trademark. I am old enough to remember when Xerox has this same problem and had to issue the same sorts of statements.

You may not realize, but asprin used to be a trademarked name. According to the story, because people called any painkiller `asprin` they lost the trademark and other companies could use the name on their packaging as well.

This is only stated so that if any legal issue ever arose they could have something on paper. All legal subjects like trademarks and such have to have every little detail outlined on paper even if no one cares it just has to be there so that no one can dispute it later for any reason.

Oh my, it would appear that this image has been altered, even enhanced, using Adobe Photoshop software. I have expert field opinion, and declare it enhanced, partly because of the thouroughly amateur pixel artefacts, and from seeing many images altered in Adobe Photoshop throughout my years in the industry.

Adobe and Photoshop are registered trademarks or trademarks of Adobe Systems Incorporated in the United States and/or other countries.

They want to protect their trademark from being turned into a common word. Like `google` or `slinky` or `fridge`. Once it becomes a common word, it looses its selling power.

Meh, it`s obviously from a CSM, or Corporate Style Manual. It`s a Master Plan most franchises have that cost them a fortune from some GD firm, that tells all its branches EXACTLY what colors to use in a logo, how many mm to have around it, where on the page its to go, etc. In my 20 years in the printing industry I saw 500 of them at least - and every single LOCAL guy said "Ah, f- what the manual says though, I want the logo in THAT corner..."

The best-laid plans of mice and Corporate Overlords...

I`ve been tempted to write a similar essay-post in response to morons who reflexively yell "SHOPPED" at almost every freaking picture they see. However, the fact that Adobe(R) actually did it, coupled with certain things they`ve done recently, makes me think they`re loosing their minds.

"Photoshopped", and its variations are part of the lexicon now and Adobe(R) should be proud of it. So, in conclusion, I respond to this by saying that Adobe(R) can go screw themselves, I`ll say shopped if I want to, Mnyah, *pthpppppt* and :-p.

this is written for a legal reason. Adobe will lose their legal rights to the word "Photoshop" if it enters common usage (e.g. "xerox"). If this happens, anyone can call their photo editing software "Photoshop" (though, of course, you can`t use the word "Adobe).

SuperSmash "There just trying not loose their trademark like xerox."

coconutdunde "They are freaking out because they risk losing their trademark if the word photoshop becomes a commonly used noun or verb rather than a proper noun. It happened to Hoover and Yo-yo!"

Wundt "You may not realize, but asprin used to be a trademarked name."

Other trademarks lost to common usage include Formica, Escalator, Trampoline, Raisin Bran, Linoleum, Dry Ice, Shredded Wheat, Mimeograph, Kerosene, Cornflakes, Cube Steak, Lanolin, High Octane, Allen wrench, Crescent wrench, Masonite, Coke, Pablum, Styrofoam, Heroin, Bikini, Chyron, Crapper, Weedwhacker, Kleenex, Linux. and Zipper.

The problem is that if your name falls into common usage, you lose the exclusive right to use it. If they don`t keep up the fight, other companies will be able to sell "photoshop software." (Microsoft already sells "crapper software.")

Photoshop`s not in danger of genericide. There are other art and editing programs, but not much quite like Photoshop. I don`t foresee the usage of "Photoshop" extending to, say, Paint Shop Pro or Corel Painter because they`re just not exactly the same (or sufficiently similar).

On a Mac keyboard, whether booted in Mac or PC mode, there are 4 keyboards in one: (1) Ordinary (2) Shifted (3) Alt/Optioned (4) Alt+Shifted. ™ is Option and 2 key (Alt 2), copyright © is Alt G, ® is Alt R, etc. Even though PC`s generally use keycodes for alternate characters, I reckon just typing them as above would work.

"Do they expect to sue everyone in society".

No, they expect to sue Newspapers, Magazines and so on that popularize the inappropriate usage of their brand. It is almost always more effective to go after companies when it comes to both money, and impact on society.

(Same goes to everyone who is going to "get" Adobe by using the uncapitalizard word. You matter very little in the grand scheme of things, sorry.)

Sorry Adobe....when something becomes common in society and a trademark becomes used as common language...you should feel honored. (Even if your trademark is thrown around as if it weren`t.)

You guys had produced a product which has joined the ranks of Band-Aidâ„¢, Hooverâ„¢, Q-Tipâ„¢, Keroseneâ„¢...Photoshopâ„¢ has become a Genericized trademark.

To which I responded, as a VERY young child, "but they`re Legos! Why wouldn`t I call Legos `Legos`?"

This, my dears, is called a Brand Book, and it`s something given to their own employees to make sure they use their brand name correctly`
I don`t see it as a jerk move or whatever, it+s normal to try to protect your brand from missuse.

Things such as zippers and thermos have lost their trademarked brand names because they didn`t protect their brand name.

I`m sorry to sound like such a pedant, but writing Brand Books is actually what I do for a living.
