A group of scientists in Utah have the ability to alter a gene in the brains of worms to change its sexual orientation?

Utah... can`t say I`m surprised. But wait til we figure out how to use it on them.

The gays will inherit the earth. :)

Wat? Worms are hermaphrodites. How can you have a preference if you are both?

"I was countering your casually bigoted assertion that *every* woman who kisses another woman knowing that a is man watching is either a "total slut" or straight (and therefore faking it with the woman)."

Not just when a man is watching, when they do it deliberately just for attention. I would consider that slutty behavior, just as I consider most forms of public displays of affection. Bisexual women are often portrayed like that in the media for the male audience, but in real life most same-sex female couples just want to be left alone.

You don`t need science for this! Don`t you realise.
All you need is a bucket of worms. Put them in front of a tv playing "Paris Hilton`s My New BFF", play Madonna during commercials, and pour in a little Cosmopolitan every now and then.
I`ve already tried this. I`m only in Highschool. And Guess What science . . It Worked! And I have the cleanest garden in at least a 20 mile radius.

The evolutionary incentive for being gay is the possibility of spontaneously changing sex like some animals are able to do in a nearly exclusive same-sex environment so as to continue propagating the species. Without the ability to change sexual orientation, the ability to spontaneously change sex would be useless.

Thank you for your attention to my half-baked theory.

Being gay isn`t really something that needs to be "fixed".

I know that some blind or deaf people hate it when we talk about "fixing" them, but they are missing out and restoring their senses provides them with something they can`t otherwise have.

With homosexuality, they are not missing out on anything. Two males can adopt a child, there are certainly no shortages of kids who need parents. Two women can use donor sperm to have a child.

Other then that, they have love, jobs, everything else that we have. They are not missing out on anything at all and therefore, they are not broken.

I always wondered where all the donations to scientific research go. Oh, it goes into finding out how people are homosexual. Because, that my friends, is beneficial to the human race as a whole. Really, now?

eh. they can research it all they want...
as long as they don`t use their knowledge to try and "cure" the human race of its gaydom.

My gay friend says that homos and lesbians are natures way of curing overpopulation......

"That is also true. But that is probably less common than one might think. Not most girl couples don`t want to involve a guy in their activities."

I didn`t say it was common, though I euspect it`s more common than many people think. Not necessarily with lesbian couples, but with two bisexual women and a man in general.

I was countering your casually bigoted assertion that *every* woman who kisses another woman knowing that a is man watching is either a "total slut" or straight (and therefore faking it with the woman).

That is also true. But that is probably less common than one might think. Not most girl couples don`t want to involve a guy in their activities.

"I wonder what the evolutionary incentive is to becoming gay..."

There need not necessarily be one. So long as enough of the population is heterosexual and producing offspring, an occasional gene for homosexuality is viable.

"Evolution does not choose the things that are good. It gets rid of the things that are bad. So there really is no "incentive" concept in evolution."

"bad" and "good" are relative to each other in the context of evolution. Evolution tends to select for the most successful traits. So "choosing the things that are good" and "getting rid of the things that are bad" are the same thing in this context.

I agree that "incentive" is the wrong word, though. That could imply a desired result, but evolution has no desires. It`s just a process.

Please don`t hate me for this:

I think one reason people can`t come to terms with homosexuality is that to some it basically means giving up (some may say attraction is not a choice, but what you do with that attraction is) your reproductive purpose as a living organism for the joy of engaging in biologically useless sexual acts.

Of course, with birth control...But, that`s only temporary. Excpet for vasectomies. Well, they can be reversed.

Can homosexual people not fall in love with another person of the opposite sex or is it just that they cannot be attracted? Should people give up being happy in order to fulfill their reproductive obligations? Of course not.

I don`t mean to make anyone mad or start a debate(it will anyway), I`m just asking questions. If you can`t be curious (no pun intended), what`s the point of living? Again, I`m asking this with great caution and with the upmost desire to not anger anyone.

"This article is incredibly offensive; the line about girls kissing in college `to thwart their parents` and as a `vehicle for porn` especially. Lesbians don`t kiss for men`s amusement unless they`re total sluts, or straight girls who want attention."

Or bisexual and wanting a threesome. Humanity isn`t a clear-cut as a straight/gay dichotomy.

"I wonder what the evolutionary incentive is to becoming gay"

Maybe there isn`t one any more than there`s an evolutionary incentive to being left-handed. There`s plenty of scope for variation in a species.

Maybe it`s a side-effect of a beneficial variation as yet unknown.

Maybe it was a way for less dominant men to reproduce. This requires a society in which more dominant men have more than one mate, which leaves less dominant men without any. Gay men could be freely left with a dominant man`s women. But not all gay men are *entirely* gay...

Maybe the optimum is some degree of bisexuality for some reason and homosexuality is just a bit too much of it.

Who knows?

"Yep yep, you`re going to have a bunch of homo-haters in here going "SEE, IT IS IN YOUR HEADS B*TCH."

But if this theory is in fact true (which I`ve suspected all along), it would essentially be considered a birth defect. This would be just as much "in their heads" as being born without any toes.
