That was pretty amazing, it`s debatable though. Documents are easily forged, plus a lot of info can get lost in translation. Cool nonetheless. Plus, you never kow what the enigmatic human body/mind can be up to.

    "
Because Carbon Dating is a very flawed method Scott."

Carbon Dating is inaccurate for objects older then about 60,000 years.
This is why Astronomers use different methods to find the age of stars (All of which seem to tell us the Earth is 4.35 billion years old).

In relevant news, this guy was not older then 60,000 years, so, with the most recent tools carbon dating might tell us his approximate age give or take 50 years.

The researchers are better off playing Backwards Accountant for now.

kikayoaka is an idiot. Carbon dating works just fine.

... but as to this guy, he didn`t live to 256. There are stories of people living for an extremely long time all over the place.

Carbon Dating will tell you within a margin of about 300 years, and it would have to have been much earlier to be accurate at all.

Ph, and I thought it was because you have to have a fu*king physical sample to test and its a bit hard to get a sample of a star when they`re kazillions of parsecs away.

About his "youthful appearance." It`s been noted that after a certain point humans stop aging. If you look at a 90-year-old and a 70-year-old, there is very little difference.

Silly people, carbon dating relies on the half life of carbon 14 (though I believe other slow-decaying isotopes are usable). The specimen has to be very old for it to work at all.

Gee, didn`t anyone think it was possible that every now and then a younger man would assume the identity of an older Li Ching-Yun, like when the older one turned about 80, a 60 year old guy would take over the name, just to create a myth that would sell their little `herbs` and make people think he had magic powers?

You know, like the Dread Pirate Roberts, or Shamu at Sea World, or the bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson. Or the actors who play James Bond?

PS - the New Orleans Voodoo Queen Marie LaVeau did exactly that. When she got too old, she took a little "vacation" and her daughter took over the family business, claiming to be the original, and so she "lived" over 100 years.

I read about something like this a few days ago. These people tended to add years onto their lives as a reward for wisdom, bravery or things like that. It was like "oh, you killed a lion? Here`s 15 years onto your life". So they didn`t actually live that long, they just added years onto their lives as reward for special things they did.
