F*ck you atheists are soo close minded and stubborn, wtf would happen if you believed? What do you have to lose? Lets say there is a heaven, if you are christian you have a chance, if you`re atheists good day. You lose nothing and gain chance :)

I read about something like this a few days ago. These people tended to add years onto their lives as a reward for wisdom, bravery or things like that. It was like "oh, you killed a lion? Here`s 15 years onto your life". So they didn`t actually live that long, they just added years onto their lives as reward for special things they did.

entire article condensed by two quotes from same article: "Was he really that old?"..."Unfortunately, we may never know. You may draw your own logical conclusions."

Hasn`t anybody noticed the significance of the number 256? 256 as in the number of different combinations of binary digits in a single byte of information? It`s obvious he`s a robot from the future sent back in time "Fur teh lulz"

BS nobody lives that long...so far nobody has verifiably lived past 125. And that`s pretty doggone old, after all. The Brit WWI vet who just passed on was the world`s oldest person, and he was 113. So this one guy doubles that, and no one else, ever? Meh.

When Li Ching-Yun was bored he would send links to IAB that were "Truly Captivating"!

`Li Ching-Yun was reported to have buried 23 wives and fostered 180 descendants by the time he died at the age of 256.`

23 wives? Damn, what a player

i think our generation will live longer than any other. its already happening. human lifespans were like 40-60 years not too long ago. as long as we can cure cancer, and weve learned to prevent it well, were ok.

Oh, and since nobody`s mentioned it yet, there used to be a different way to measure years. Or did everyone think that we`ve always measured years with the current calendar? And different ethnicities in China used different calendars. Chinese calander

Hey, this story is finally being picked up. After I learned some things from a 63 year old daoist monk (who could hold my entire body weight with one arm) in Sichuan, China, I have to admit that these things do seem plausible, if not inconceivable.

Gee, didn`t anyone think it was possible that every now and then a younger man would assume the identity of an older Li Ching-Yun, like when the older one turned about 80, a 60 year old guy would take over the name, just to create a myth that would sell their little `herbs` and make people think he had magic powers?

You know, like the Dread Pirate Roberts, or Shamu at Sea World, or the bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson. Or the actors who play James Bond?

PS - the New Orleans Voodoo Queen Marie LaVeau did exactly that. When she got too old, she took a little "vacation" and her daughter took over the family business, claiming to be the original, and so she "lived" over 100 years.

Why are so many people always so giddy for the gene pool? We trying to produce the master race or something? And why do these people always think they are worthy of the gene pool themselves?

"You guys are dumb.read the bible". A thought felt statement from undoubtedly one of the greatest brain trusts on here. I don`t think fractious chunks of information from what some see as no more than a fairy tale will make this ludicrous story any more credible...sorry Tex.

>About his "youthful appearance." It`s been noted that after a certain point humans stop aging. If you look at a 90-year-old and a 70-year-old, there is very little difference.

Silly people, carbon dating relies on the half life of carbon 14 (though I believe other slow-decaying isotopes are usable). The specimen has to be very old for it to work at all.

This is why Astronomers use different methods to find the age of stars

Ph, and I thought it was because you have to have a fu*king physical sample to test and its a bit hard to get a sample of a star when they`re kazillions of parsecs away.

Carbon Dating will tell you within a margin of about 300 years, and it would have to have been much earlier to be accurate at all.

kikayoaka is an idiot. Carbon dating works just fine.

... but as to this guy, he didn`t live to 256. There are stories of people living for an extremely long time all over the place.

Would carbon dating not just tell them the approx. date of death? I can`t imagine how it could tell the date of birth.

"
Because Carbon Dating is a very flawed method Scott."

Carbon Dating is inaccurate for objects older then about 60,000 years.
This is why Astronomers use different methods to find the age of stars (All of which seem to tell us the Earth is 4.35 billion years old).

In relevant news, this guy was not older then 60,000 years, so, with the most recent tools carbon dating might tell us his approximate age give or take 50 years.

The researchers are better off playing Backwards Accountant for now.
