Management says: "There are too many of you." Somewhere, Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson are licking their chops.

My city still has a "black" pool. It`s been there since my dad was a kid. I can`t believe we haven`t grown up since then.

had to be in my hometown. Kids just want to swim, there isn`t any "undercurrent of aggression" they`re kids, trying to spend their summer doing something fun, healthy,LEGAL.

We blacks are good at changing a perfectly peacefull and passive white atmosphere at a pool into a "south central L.A" situation.

P.S. - I support the right of ethnically-based organizations to exist, along with their right to exclude members/beneficiaries upon any basis they wish; such as the Negro College Fund.

Redux: Most of those kids looked well below the age of any such unfavorable characteristics taking hold, and thus should be EXPOSED to any desirable alternative as defined by those who might have objected out-of-hand at their presence.

Maybe they were simply being unruly that day or relatively unsupervised compared to other parties as pointed out by many submissions hitherto; in that case, the club should have known what it was getting itself into with 1 parental guardian on-hand at any given time..

Devil`s Advocate: In my own experience, black kids tend to be more unruly in the presence of open water sources than whites.

Secondly, despite their youth, the ubiquitous `accents` and lingo which usually accompany such varieties of American do "fundamentally change the atmosphere" of anywhere they go and have detracted from my own experiences in the past, swimming or otherwise.

Thirdly, the strong undercurrent of aggression and resentment present in black American culture/disposition could be enough to cause some understandable concern and discomfort among relatively homogeneous white sub-populations.

Two completely different issues here.
1) A racist mom complained that there were to many black kids.
2) Other people complained that having 30 or so kids in a pool that is probably 30x50 feet max "changed the atmosphere" I agree.

Those poor kids. It`s one thing to be a racist asshat, it`s another thing to take it out on children. Their daycamp paid the fee in full and these kids were NOT unsupervised and did nothing wrong. What a disgraceful world we still live in...

I don`t think a lot of people realize just how badly racism hurts and destroys. I grew up with it as a kid and this story just breaks my heart.

Used to be you didn`t have to go to a private club, you could just go to a public pool. Now you can`t even go to the pool at the private club.

I`m confused about one thing: do they regularly let a day camp of white kids who are not members of their private club use the pool?

I`m white and I`m not allowed to go use the pool at a private club either.

How did the swim clubs presidents quote about how the black kids might "change the complexion" of the club get left out? Thats perhaps the only non-hearsay example of racism in this entire case (honestly, regardless of colour, letting in a bunch of kids could have pissed off the clubs members alone).

Canada actually has quite a bit of racism. Just less in your face blatant. Ever hear a non minority tow truck driver b*tch about the minority ones in Brampton (which is referred to as Bramladesh by some)Ontario? It`s there, believe me Canadians are no better when it comes to racist thought processes.

The AP implies that the members of this club are racist; the members say they simply don`t want their private family swim club overrun by dozens of unsupervised children, regardless of race.

In order to call the members racist, they would either have to deny regular membership to a black family, or they would have to allow a large day camp of several dozen white children to use their facilities without objection. Since neither of these things has happened, there is no valid basis for calling then racist. End of argument.

Why do you have to justify what you wanted to say with the fact that you have "so many so called" black friends and on top of that make a point to say your child has a black baby doll? You have FRIENDS at work and your child has a baby doll. When you label things, it can come across as if you are racist.

Just say what you feel! Don`t sugar coat it! We all know what you mean.

It`s funny though, it`s not like, "What are all these kids doing here"? It`s more like:

"What are all these BLACK kids doing here"?

What, you think they`re all going to pull some gats out of their swim trunks and start shooting up the place and playing that loud damn "GANGSTER RAP" and influencing your precious princes and princesses?

They are kids....at a summer camp...they want to swim and have fun LIKE ALL KIDS ARE SUPPOSED TO and they should not be subjecting to hearing comments like they heard, that`s not right and it`s not fair. It`s F*ucking 2009, get over i

Hm, yeah if what MystreT says is correct, I`m willing to bet a lot of those parents are motivated by race. BUT...what was the CLUB management thinking, letting a summer camp come to a private pool? Black or white, it`s a private pool for a reason--people want a quiet, uncrowded, regulated place to bring their families. I`d be ticked off too! Camps overcrowd everything--just ask anyone who has tried to go to an amusement park or water park during the summer. It`s insane. But that`s a public place.

As for all the people reaching out, offering free services--personal chefs to teach the kids to cook???--come on, gimme a break. I feel bad for the kids, honestly it`s not THEIR fault, but jeez, they`re not dying orphans! Don`t tell me there aren`t PUBLIC pools or parks anywhere that have the room for a bunch of campers.

1. If it`s a private club, they can do whatever they want.

2. I`d take my kids away if a busload of kids (of any color) showed up to crowd a pool.

@justjason44; I don`t think that, in itself was the racist part.Refunding their money and asking them to come back was the racist part. I live close to this area and believe me, it`s predominately white, middle to upper middle class. I am not shocked at all this happened.

BUT, in their differnce, this AP story is apparently incorrect. They weren`t the only campers turned away. Another Local group was also turned away:

*puts on his anti flame suit*

I`m sure I`m gonna get rocked for this... but it has to be said/asked.

So if I see 65 kids walk into an area... I`m suddenly a racist for asking my friend "I wonder why all these black kids are here?"?

There were a large number of kids... they happened to be *gasp* black. Oh well... reading the other side shows that this story is in hyper spin to make it LOOK more racist than it actually was.

They actually teach black history to Germans over here (and not just in the shortest month of the year and not just about Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks).
*wow, thats a relief.*
I have been in discussions with my Italian and German Friends and they were shocked that it took this long to have a minority president seeing that we are a "melting pot" and all.

*Well, I`m glad we slow Americans could finally appease the watchful eyes of the Eurotrash contingent by electing an American with African ancestry."

Also, thanks for trying to find a way to appease us bloodthirsty Americans. We remember and tend to return favors given to us.

I believe Americans need more education starting from pre-school all the way through college on these types of subjects. I think they need to throw away all those history books and start teaching about what really happened. Let`s get to the root of everything and figure out what the fear is and dispel all the myths. Then we need to move on. We are all humans, we all have blood in our body, we all need air to breath....let`s just put aside our differences and just get along.

Oh and BTW...Jesse Jackson is a jackass. In the beginning with MLK he meant well, but somehow as he received more power he lost his way.

Wow, there are so many ways to come at this. First off, Oldollie, I read the article and what else do you expect them to say. The best part of the article was how they found a hispanic teen to say it was just a misunderstanding. That is classic! This club is racist and it was brought to light and I hope they are dealt with appropriately. It`s unfortunate, but these kids are getting just a taste of what`s to come as they grow up. Even though it is 2009 and we do have a black president; being a victim of racism is as inevitable as breathing air. This will continue to happen as long as we have a race that feels so damn superior to everyone else.
@Fatex, please tell me that was just an ignorant joke because you have nothing better to say!
And I will add that this is a problem largely in America. Being over here in Europe, I have not felt out of place and discriminated against. In my experience people are more tolerant, educated with regards to race/nationality issues and laid back.

Well, well well. It turns out there are TWO sides to this story, but, typical of AP, you only got one. Here`s the other side.

It turns out the members paid to belong to a PRIVATE swim club so they could have a nice, quite place to take their FAMILIES. Then one day their quite little club is suddenly and unexpectedly inundated by 65 largely unsupervised children.

It turns out the club president sold one-day-per-week passes to not one but THREE day camps without consulting or even notifying the members.

While there may have been racist comments from some members, the main complaints had nothing to do with race, e.g., "This has nothing to do with race. I paid my money for a private swim club. If they`re gonna have it out to camps, then I want my money back."

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can find racism anywhere. They exist because of, and owe their career, to racism. If there were no racism in the world, they`d have no purpose. Therefore, they have to invent it sometimes.

Note: This comment is off-topic and referring only to Jackson and Sharpton, not the issue at hand.

Racism is fundamentally not a cement ideal, because it`s completely subjective. While there are certainly times where the balance of `power` is obviously skewed, there are plenty more gray areas.
Personally, I find nobody more dignified than a well-dressed, -mannered, and -spoken black person, male or female. Those who hold their heads high and by their own nature repel discrimination.
However, there is also the (to put it bluntly) caste of black people who are easily and accurately describes as "ghetto", those who are simply thugs who use the term racism as a personal weapon against discomfort.
If there were a misconception in which the poolgoers believed this group acted as one representative of the latter group, i can`t blame them at all for returning their money and banning them--i`ve wished the same thing done to loud, inconsiderate, and trashy people many times.
In this case, perhaps not, but as said previously, the entire concept is subjective.

Well said Osiris (as usual). Truth is Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will sensationalize the event and they seem to have the effect of polarizing it rather than finding amenable conclusions.

If it is a private club that owns the pool, I suppose they have the right to refuse service, it`s effed up but they`re free to do so for the same reason we can have things like the united negro college fund or any other racially exclusive organization.

Hell I`m not allowed to enter the Mormon Temple in Utah because I`m not a member of the church, that`s discrimination, but the truth is I don`t care to frequent the sort of places that condone such behavior anyhow.

Racism exists, even calling someone racist is a form of racism. It`s an acknowledgement and a judgment based on race. Suing someone for it isn`t likely to change their view, if anything it will more firmly entrench their anger. You can`t beat a person until they like you.

Lion, in this instance these kids have a legitimate gripe. (amongst the many jobs I`ve had in my life, one was as the General Manager of a law firm.) In the U.S. testimony from children IS admissible. Even without that, the actions taken by the club are questionable and suspect. Couple that with the fact that this was a SUPERVISED group of children. The club in question is about to have some serious legal problems.

Hopefully Sharpton and Jackson will stay out of this, as their presence will only complicate an already unfortunate situation.

Good luck taking legal action, the testimony of 3 underage kids is not legally admissable, the club refunded their payment in full despite having already provided swimming access, and they`re scarcely likely to admit in court it was because they were black. Sometimes in life you just have to accept there`s nothing that can be done about injustice.

I`m a camp counselor and there have been plenty of times where our group of kids have been kicked out and banned from, pools, lakes, waterparks etc. Yet I have never been interviewed for a news story, thats because it has nothing to do with their skin color it because most kids that age are pricks who could care less about anyone but themselves. Ive seen kids running full speed knocking over 3 year olds and not even looking back. No matter what race they are a large group of kids that age is going to be hard as hell to handle.
