that was a lame headbutt by the manager - the player overreacted to get him in poo.

For a second, I thought it was going to be the Zidane headbutt again.

I was watching Cash Cab the other day and there was a question about soccer. The contestant had no clue and said "Who watches soccer?" Ben Bailey replied "The rest of the world."

That is le bullpoo. In most carribean and central american nations it isnt that popular. There aren`t huge inroads in Africa yet. Honestly...the only sport that can make a case for being a worldwide sport is basketball.

vv Ryan, what I`m getting at it that most users who complain all the time about reposts (whether true or not - is this a repost?) do nothing to actually contribute to the community by submitting new content. It`s lazy, it`s bitching, it`s expecting to have your cake for free while others do the work, and as I`ve said previously:

Soccer will never be the worlds sport because the world doesnt play it. The US, a few nations in the Carribean and Central America, Parts of Asia, and Parts of Africa dont really play it. Basketball is the only one were it is truly played all over, even though it isnt the most popular. So in conclusion, if there is a world sport, it would be basketball

primetimekin - You`re right, there are some countries that don`t play soccer... North Korea has an embargo on soccer balls, Somalia is holding the country`s only soccer ball for ransom, and all the balls in Cuba fell into the sea and drifted into Miami...

That never happens with basketball though.. truly a world sport!

Btw, the total audience for the 2002 world cup final was over 1 billion viewers!!! But I`m sure the other 5 billion were watching basketball that day!

most countries usually have a unique sport to suit their climate
    Australia has AFL(outdoors- its warm)
netherlands have handball (indoors- its cold)
soccer is usually the next favourite (or has a massive junior league) making it the next popular. The reason basketball outside the USA isn`t so popular is because it is an american sport. (i.e. everywhere else dislikes american culture)

I really expected this to be Zidane. Mind you, that one was quite cool cause he floored the bloke!
Anyway, to all Americans claiming that their sports are the best; you are the only ones who play it! Typically British sports like football(soccer if you need a translation), cricket and rugby all have major international competitions whereas baseball, basketball and American football(bad copy of rugby) are only played seriously within America.

"Soccer will never be the worlds sport because the world doesnt play it."

First, it`s called football, because you actually use your foot to play the ball, hence football; not to be confused with american rugby.

To know football is a world sport, just look a the teams here in europe, they are filled with foreigners from south america, africa even some asian countries, sometimes the majority of the players in a team are not even born in the country of their team, look at the players of madrid last year.

If you look at NBA teams they`ve got their sporadic spaniard or chinese player but that`s it, why? because it`s just not that popular in the rest of the world.

Besides it`s much easier to play football in the streets than basketball, you just need space and four trees, jackets or whatever to pose as goals.

They do this because they always get away with it. If the ref had any balls to book people for simulation anymore it wouldn`t happen. But the game is ruled by fannies and played by people who aren`t British.

and sean162....fat america? really now? how about you shut the hell up and not generalize an entire population based on the bullpoo you gobble up?
or is that just how it is over in arrogant douchebag Europe?
its called football because rugby is taken from the original football, and american football (technically called gridiron) is taken from rugby...still doesnt make much sense to use the name but...whatever

this is probably going to open up a huge american football bashing just by mentioning it but...whatever, if it gives you the smug sense of superiority it seems you folks love so much, then so be it i guess

SpankyJake I love how you call someone out for making a generalisation then make one youself. *ahem* "or is that just how it is over in arrogant douchebag Europe?"
Anyway, rugby was actually invented after someone picked up the ball in a game of football and ran into the goal with it. It was the first time it had happened and the ref didn`t know what to make of it. It then became a public school sport. Played without pads, and for the record I hate football/soccer too.

Football as a sport has been around for centuries, but in the 18th and 19th centuries some of the public schools (for Americans, our public schools are the elite schools like Etone, harrow, etc) started to codify the rules. Each school had it`s own version of the rules and eventually, so school scould play against each other, an association to clarify the rules was formed, hence Association Football.

As each school still played its own traditional version that was called Eton Football, Stonyhurst Football, Harrow Football, etc, one school had Rugby Football. It happens that Rugby Football for some reason took off as a sport in it`s own right (there is an apocraphyl story of a chap named William Webb-Ellis picking up the ball and running with it). The school of Rugby settled ont he rules and the other public schools joined in, it was then naturally transported to the Army and Navy (the army v navy match is the longest running match I beleive) and taken to the colonies.

(contd.) America wasn`t a colony but took on Rugby Football and somewhere along the way people decided to throw the ball forward, concentrate the game at the breakdown and so on. It was at this time that it changed it`s name to American Football, following on the etymology of the original games (Eton football, rugby football, etc) and hence the name has stuck.

As it became a major sport the name football stuck, as it does in Britain for Association football.

It is still a good sport ruined by stopping and starting, if it was all one continuous match akin to Rugby, it would be better. In fact they used to show the highlights of some games over here in britain where they took out most of the stoppages and it was quite good.

Oh, and football is without doubt the worlds most popular sport, personally I prefer Rugby Union, but you can`t win `em all!

primetime, no you weren`t right about basketball being a more popular world sport than Football (let`s give it it`s proper name). The majority of lists citing the popularity of sports around the globe cite football as the no. 1. Do some research that doesn`t involve just googling US facts about the sport.

Soccer will never be the worlds sport because the world doesnt play it. The US, a few nations in the Carribean and Central America, Parts of Asia, and Parts of Africa dont really play it

ok Prime, Central America doesn`t plat football...wrong there, Mexico are ranked 26th in the world. Asia? are you kidding me, the K-league in Korea and the J-League in Japan are two of the best supported leagues in the world- Korea and Japan hosted the 2002 world cup.
And saying Africa doesn`t play football is just stupid, some of the worlds best players come from Africa - Eto`o, Drogba, Essien etc. and the African Cup of Nations is one of the most popular international competitions. in fact the 2010 world cup is being held in Africa.

Basketball and Football are miles ahead of any other sport in terms of international recognition but i think football is still the more popular of the 2

I don`t understand why people are getting into an argument over this video but I guess that`s just the way it goes. Anyway lets clarify one thing here. There is no such thing as English football like I`ve seen someone say, and it is most certainly NOT called soccer except in the US. So lets call things by it`s names. The one played all over the world using your feet is football, the other one played in the US is American football I guess, but since it is your sport I guess you can call it whatever you want! xD

Football(Soccer) is definitely the most popular sport in the world Prime. The World Cup could potentially be on par with the Olympics. The USA is one of the last countries left who aren`t big into soccer. There are many countries where the entire nation gets the day off work when it`s team is playing in the world cup. In my school they even set up a TV and everyone gets out of class and can go watch it. And it is most definitely a worldwide sport. In the carribean, Trinidad and Tobago + Mexico and more are all big soccer teams. In Africa, Angola, Ghana, Kenya, S. Africa(which is where the 2010 World Cup is to be held). Obviously Europe is big into it. South America is probably the second biggest soccer continent with Brazil often winning the world cup and Argentina doing very well. In the rest of the world, Japan, China, Autralia etc... all play and make a big deal out of soccer. Even in underdeveloped countries you see kids playing soccer with old balls they`ve made and stuff.

Soccer may be the most popular sport today, but I bet Buzkashi will get the proper attention it deserves! How can anyone not like it? Here`s a brief description:

"In Buzkashi, a headless carcass is placed in the center of a circle and surrounded by the players of two opposing teams. The object of the game, is to get control of the carcass and bring it to the scoring area. Although it seems like a simple task, it is not. Only the most masterful players, (called chapandaz) ever even get close to the carcass. The competition is fierce, and the winner of a match receives prizes that have been donated by a sponsor. These prizes range from money, to fine turbans and clothes."

Kicking around a headless carcass AND getting a free turban? Move over soccer!!!!

Yes, we get it. Soccer should be called "Football" and American Football isn`t really football. But even if we started calling soccer football, we`d still suck at it and therefore, probably prefer American "tackle"ball.

Time to accept the truth. Soccer is popular throughout the world hands down. The reasons:
    1) It is cheap to play, hell you just need to wait for roadkill to bloat and you`re good to go!
    2) It is an excellant excercise for gross motor skills which need to be developed in five year olds and the elderly, so there`s that.
    3) Moms need a cheap activity (refer to #1) to get the kids out of the tent or flat so that they can make more or get a pack of cigs and some crisps.
    4) Frustrated at not being real athletes (one step above 40 year olds who play softball), joggers and long distance runners needed a quasi valid sport with which to highlight their amazing shorts.
    5) Not enough father/son time I guess.
    6) The European and South American hooligans will always need an outlet for their pent up aggression at not getting their own snazzy shorts and being able to thinly veil their curiosities about these "feelings" they`ve been having.

Besides, everyone knows you`re not a real athlete until you make more money then you`ll ever need, get busted for carrying a weapon or beating your wife/girlfriend and take "performance enhancing drugs".

ok about the whole soccer/football thing - let me clear it up.
Football was originally called Association Football because modern day Rugby was called Football at the time. Soccer was an abbreviation of Association, so during the dawn of football it was in fact called soccer. American Football is a good sport but still its a pretty stupid name for a sport where only 2 players kick the ball
