Yep, cholesterol is the leading killer in the USA.
Have you stopped to consider that, yes, your own health is your own choice, but what about the people around you? The people inhaling your fumes? So yeah, I stand behind any and all taxes on cigarettes, because although I`ll never smoke, I still don`t want to get it into my system.
lol jk that was out of character for me, but i had to say it
I LOVE these things that freak you out, especially the British car wreck ones.
American ones are "Wear your seatbelt, or else you`ll get a ticket."
British ones are "Wear your seatbelt, or all of these horrifying deadly things will happen to you." Drives the point home better in my opinion.
Tonyjet: you fail. I think you don`t have a goddamn clue what you`re talking about, otherwise you wouldn`t be saying these things.
If you haven`t smoked: shut up, you don`t know what it`s like to be addicted. If you are a smoker: you would understand it`s not easy to quit; and that these kind of comments don`t convince a smoker to quit.If you smoked but quit: SHUT THE F**K UP! You should be helping people to quit and don`t be so machiavelistic about it.
Either way, your post made no sense. Perhaps YOU need to reconsider that post.
Its really hard for people to stop. I hate smoking. I have been around smokers my entire life, and I wish there were some laws about the substances they put in cigarettes.
i likes the brain stroke pic though. it was interestinf
I have never smoked. I`m asthmatic I cannot be around smoke. However, for a majority of my life, my parents have smoked. They`ve only recently quit (about four years, after the death of my sister)
I am proud of my parents for not smoking any more. (save for my dad because he has taken up chewing tobacco..I want to throw up just thinking about it).
But things, especially for my mother, are slightly improving. As the tar gets out of her system her lunch capacity will slightly improve, save for the irriversable damage already caused by smoking for all those years.
I`m not even a US citizen and I know how that right works better than you. Yes, you have the right of free speech...as long as it remains in good taste and is not vulgar. If it is obscene, then it opens up a whole new set of rules and regulations.
If most people used the radio instead of the TV, it might be OK. The facts themselves are less puke-inducing than the images
i believe that the brown stuff was meant to represent the tar found it cigarettes, cigars ect
said tar over time builds up in the lungs leaving less room for air therefore causing reduced lung function
and btw this won`t work. both my mum and brother smoke and both say that when they see these adverts it just makes them more resolute smokers as they don`t like being told what to do
the problem i have with this is its a stupid reason to smoke and while i could say "its your life, f*** it up if you want to" i love them both and i don`t want them to die due to stubbornness
sorry for the long post
and the funny part is that we supposedly have a constitution that gives us the right to free speech
I didn`t get the reduced lung function one, though. Some kind of brown fluid, eh?
You weren`t even BORN in the 60`s you silly sausage!
The day you shove a SPAS-12 up the arse of a cat and use it as a silencer you`ll understand.
And as a side note; that spammer lasted a full three minutes. Well done mods, well done indeed!
Part of the reason I smoke is for the stimulant nicotine. I`m ADHD and the pills I took cost nearly $200 w/o insurance. I don`t see the government making any efforts to make my medication more affordable. While I was on it, I did quit, quite successfully. When I switched jobs and lost my insurance, I could no longer afford the medication. So I self medicate, with nicotine. If the government /really/ cared, they would make stronger efforts to help people, instead of guilting smokers and grossing them out, while leaving the dirty work to the non-profits.
I think almost every smoker I know (myself included) would be the first person to tell you "Don`t start."
How about sticking to just the lungs and bronchial tubes? The ones directly and uniquely affected by smoke, I mean. That would be more persuasive. Show me tar, show me smoke smelting alveoli together. Get out with this stroke and throat cancer stuff.
Well, duh. I`d assume that was its intention.
That lung sludge they were drizzling was foul looking.
Have you ever PLAYED Postal 2!? It turned me from a Saintly Oracle of Goodness to the depraved, twisted individual you now know*.
And you thought it was DavyMerde`s "special counselling" that dun it to me!
*Er, at least it would have except I`ve never even seen it cause it`s illegal in Australia of course
gotta love the way governments work."oh, I say, you.., you weak people who aren`t us, we know what`s wrong with everything. And I say you can`t do this! oh what do you mean we have to follow those rules? We MADE the rules! silly peasant, we are the law.
what does postal 2 have to do with starting a street massacre?
...or access certain websites, and we`re the country where it`s illegal to even possess Postal 2 because of its severe violence, anti-social behaviour and being able to pi*s on the other people in town. Very interesting observation, Traxus, I`ll pass that on to my local Member of Parliament next time I`m arrested for a street massacre.
Hey Crawdaddy - you probably won`t see this, but good work and stay strong. I am always quitting!
My 17 year old brother started smoking about last year. He`s unemployed, about to drop high school I`m pretty sure, so I don`t see how he`s even going to support such an unhealthy habit. -.-; Just makes me angry when I think about this.
Actually I`m surprised how intelligent and serious IAB is being for once, I asked for people`s reactions and that`s what we`ve got; serious insightful thought about the ad. In what way are they pathetic!?
Definitely not `to far.`
My parents smoked. They are some of the strongest people in the world, since my father left it from one day to another (after smoking a pack a day) and my mom now smokes only 1 cigarrete a day (after smoking also 1 pack a day).
I admire them. But I also know not everyone has that strength. It`s not easy. We, non-smokers, can`t jude. We don`t know.
I smoke occassionaly when I drink, but I`m against the whole `smoking is cool` thing. This advertisment murders the trend. If they can stop new smokers from starting up and let all the current smokers...yeah disappear. I guess their point would`ve gotten across.
Also another law they tried to pass over here was raising ciggy taxes. Most smokers just said the money will come out of other parts of their budget and it`s not really an incentive to quit.
guess this is taking a different approach to raising taxes.
Plus tbh if you drink alcohol, or eat junk food or do anything thats harming your body in anyway I don`t think you have the right to tell me how i should treat my body.
Those of you who have never been addicted will have no idea.
WTF are you talking about? I`ve been smoking off and on since I was 13. It has nothing to do with being selfish. Addiction is a very powerful thing. People who are able to quit a habit such as smoking, crack, or heroin, etc. are probably the people with the strongest will power in the world. If you`ve never had addictions like that then don`t judge.
Here`s the deal the more you tell people to quit and why the more people will end up starting (mostly kids, just look at how the D.A.R.E. program worked) however if we show them, really show them they may actually quit... i just enjoy it too much to quit atm.
The only thing good about his ad is that it may stop people from picking up the habit... no... addiction in the first place.
Those that smoke may glance at it with a passing interest but then they`ll light up a cigarette because the damn commercial made them think about smoking.
You`ve been smoking for 2 years. Nuff said.
No, I don`t think it`s going too far because it`s a fact - that`s what happens to you when you smoke. It IS graphic but that`s what happens... they aren`t sugarcoating it for once, so good for them!
Also, i didn`t know this was an Aussie commercial. Neat.
I`m currently quitting for the fourth time. Started on Friday and had a couple each day from 2 packs a day. Today I`ve had none.
But I dont think they work anyway.... they didn`t help me quit and i smoked since i was 12. it took a hot girl to get me there so maybe that`s what they should show during cartoon time. beautiful naked women who are disgusted with smokers. its a win win scenario.
I didn`t smoke back then, unfortunately I do now. I suppose I should quit eh? :)
There are laws in Australia prohibiting graphic medical imagery being shown without appropriate warnings, and if this was a commercial company, the ads would almost certainly be banned from TV. But because its the government, and a "necessary message", those laws don`t seem to apply.
The question is "Does this ad go too far?"
