These ads are being shown on Free-to-Air and PayTV in Australia, 24/7 - during kids cartoons, night TV, even during dinner.

There are laws in Australia prohibiting graphic medical imagery being shown without appropriate warnings, and if this was a commercial company, the ads would almost certainly be banned from TV. But because its the government, and a "necessary message", those laws don`t seem to apply.

The question is "Does this ad go too far?"

I didn`t smoke back then, unfortunately I do now. I suppose I should quit eh? :)

Not to far ..... people are desensitized they need a good kick in z ass to make em see whats right in front of there face.

But I dont think they work anyway.... they didn`t help me quit and i smoked since i was 12. it took a hot girl to get me there so maybe that`s what they should show during cartoon time. beautiful naked women who are disgusted with smokers. its a win win scenario.

people don`t realize the addiction to nicotine is stronger than the imagery shown in this video. Yes people who smoke know this crap but nicotine has such control on people that some even smoke right after they get tumors removed. People just see smoking as a nasty habit etc. those who don`t smoke have no idea what it`s like to try and quit. It almost like telling you to just stop breathing.

I`m currently quitting for the fourth time. Started on Friday and had a couple each day from 2 packs a day. Today I`ve had none.

Yes, It`s a deadly habit. And I don`t smoke. But I, For one, Will not condemn smokers or approve of passing laws subjugating them. Why ? Because once the state is through with persecuting them, They`ll go after other "Sins" next. They are already planning it.

I think that this`ll help people to stop, more than a simple warning on the side of a pack. Of course it won`t help everyone, or most people, but maybe it`ll convince a few people to stop, and that`s all the better, mm? :)

They show that commecial here, too, in Louisiana, USA (but they show it in bits, same footage) - i`m sure other places have it too.

No, I don`t think it`s going too far because it`s a fact - that`s what happens to you when you smoke. It IS graphic but that`s what happens... they aren`t sugarcoating it for once, so good for them!

Also, i didn`t know this was an Aussie commercial. Neat.

    "that a good ad"

The only thing good about his ad is that it may stop people from picking up the habit... no... addiction in the first place.

Those that smoke may glance at it with a passing interest but then they`ll light up a cigarette because the damn commercial made them think about smoking.

I was smoking a cig. while watching that... and I`m about to smoke another, that was the best commercial every, they should bring those over here.

Here`s the deal the more you tell people to quit and why the more people will end up starting (mostly kids, just look at how the D.A.R.E. program worked) however if we show them, really show them they may actually quit... i just enjoy it too much to quit atm.

"i dont smoke why should i have to be traumatized smokers are so selfish"

WTF are you talking about? I`ve been smoking off and on since I was 13. It has nothing to do with being selfish. Addiction is a very powerful thing. People who are able to quit a habit such as smoking, crack, or heroin, etc. are probably the people with the strongest will power in the world. If you`ve never had addictions like that then don`t judge.

"Among heroin` addicts, about 3 percent rank the urge to smoke as equal to or stronger than the urge to take heroin. Among those addicted to alcohol, about 50 percent say the urge to smoke is at least as strong as the urge to drink. " Philip J. Hilts, New York Times, August 2, 1994

Those of you who have never been addicted will have no idea.

I`m hardly selfish if I`m damaging my own body. Jeez, I hate anti-smokers. Them people that see you smoke and are like "ZOMG DATS BAD 4 U". FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I KNOW IT IS.

Plus tbh if you drink alcohol, or eat junk food or do anything thats harming your body in anyway I don`t think you have the right to tell me how i should treat my body.

Yeah this ad has been around for a while, it`s really a compilation of other government anti-smoking ads so this isn`t all that new. First time I saw it, got my attention lol. It will help more with people that don`t smoke, making them disgusted and probably pushing their opinions to ones that smoke.

I smoke occassionaly when I drink, but I`m against the whole `smoking is cool` thing. This advertisment murders the trend. If they can stop new smokers from starting up and let all the current smokers...yeah disappear. I guess their point would`ve gotten across.

Also another law they tried to pass over here was raising ciggy taxes. Most smokers just said the money will come out of other parts of their budget and it`s not really an incentive to quit.

guess this is taking a different approach to raising taxes.

Smoking is one of the most powerful addictions ever. Not just because the physical efects, but also because the social context of smoking.

My parents smoked. They are some of the strongest people in the world, since my father left it from one day to another (after smoking a pack a day) and my mom now smokes only 1 cigarrete a day (after smoking also 1 pack a day).

I admire them. But I also know not everyone has that strength. It`s not easy. We, non-smokers, can`t jude. We don`t know.

rikakitty, you need to know that decades ago smoking was a fashion, people who did start didn`t know it had all the side effects as we know now. It was perceived to be cool. This ad now does the complete opposite. It just will have to take a while before any big results occur.

I really hate seeing young kids smoking these days. >_> I just don`t see how they feel like it`s such a cool thing to do, or how it makes them appear to be older or unique. When I see them smoking I just shake my head and think to myself how much of a tool they are to be doing this...

My 17 year old brother started smoking about last year. He`s unemployed, about to drop high school I`m pretty sure, so I don`t see how he`s even going to support such an unhealthy habit. -.-; Just makes me angry when I think about this.

...or access certain websites, and we`re the country where it`s illegal to even possess Postal 2 because of its severe violence, anti-social behaviour and being able to pi*s on the other people in town. Very interesting observation, Traxus, I`ll pass that on to my local Member of Parliament next time I`m arrested for a street massacre.

Am I the only one who thinks most of those examples are a little irrelevant? Sure, it`s cancer, but, for example the stroke scene, most of those or something more disturbing could happen to anybody. It`s no more disgusting than say, the HPV tree man a month or two ago.

How about sticking to just the lungs and bronchial tubes? The ones directly and uniquely affected by smoke, I mean. That would be more persuasive. Show me tar, show me smoke smelting alveoli together. Get out with this stroke and throat cancer stuff.

I don`t know if the ad goes too far, but I do know that graphic imagery of what smoking can do to you isn`t what helps people quit.

Part of the reason I smoke is for the stimulant nicotine. I`m ADHD and the pills I took cost nearly $200 w/o insurance. I don`t see the government making any efforts to make my medication more affordable. While I was on it, I did quit, quite successfully. When I switched jobs and lost my insurance, I could no longer afford the medication. So I self medicate, with nicotine. If the government /really/ cared, they would make stronger efforts to help people, instead of guilting smokers and grossing them out, while leaving the dirty work to the non-profits.

I think almost every smoker I know (myself included) would be the first person to tell you "Don`t start."

AlfishKK > I didn`t get the reduced lung function one, though. Some kind of brown fluid, eh?

i believe that the brown stuff was meant to represent the tar found it cigarettes, cigars ect

said tar over time builds up in the lungs leaving less room for air therefore causing reduced lung function

and btw this won`t work. both my mum and brother smoke and both say that when they see these adverts it just makes them more resolute smokers as they don`t like being told what to do

the problem i have with this is its a stupid reason to smoke and while i could say "its your life, f*** it up if you want to" i love them both and i don`t want them to die due to stubbornness

As much as this ad is true, i think it`s extremely over the top. i`ve only been smoking a year and, yes, i have felt the effects of smoking. HOWEVER, i`m in the UK and smokers are the main reason the government get their funding (the tax on cigarettes is ridiculously high). For all we know i could go outside and get hit by a bus today. The government are going about this all wrong. If they want to ban smoking because it`s dangerous and life-threatening then they may aswell ban driving too - it`s a well known fact that the most dangerous thing you will ever do in your life is get into a car.

While I understand that people want to smoke, they must understand that it doesn`t just effect them but the people around them.

I have never smoked. I`m asthmatic I cannot be around smoke. However, for a majority of my life, my parents have smoked. They`ve only recently quit (about four years, after the death of my sister)

I am proud of my parents for not smoking any more. (save for my dad because he has taken up chewing tobacco..I want to throw up just thinking about it).

But things, especially for my mother, are slightly improving. As the tar gets out of her system her lunch capacity will slightly improve, save for the irriversable damage already caused by smoking for all those years.

`that being said, i admire quitters, it takes a lot of guts. too bad for the rest who dont have the will power, oh oh am sorry, who dont want to quit because its a personal choice.`

Tonyjet: you fail. I think you don`t have a goddamn clue what you`re talking about, otherwise you wouldn`t be saying these things.

If you haven`t smoked: shut up, you don`t know what it`s like to be addicted.
If you are a smoker: you would understand it`s not easy to quit; and that these kind of comments don`t convince a smoker to quit.
If you smoked but quit: SHUT THE F**K UP! You should be helping people to quit and don`t be so machiavelistic about it.

Either way, your post made no sense. Perhaps YOU need to reconsider that post.

I LOVE these things that freak you out, especially the British car wreck ones.

American ones are "Wear your seatbelt, or else you`ll get a ticket."

British ones are "Wear your seatbelt, or all of these horrifying deadly things will happen to you." Drives the point home better in my opinion.

I don`t think it`s too much for kids to see, because some people start smoking at a VERY young age. I once saw a thirteen year old sharing a smoke with an eight year old. And even for people who don`t smoke, they know why they shouldn`t start smoking. People have said these ads don`t work, and someone said that they key is to not get addicted in the first place. That`s true. Kids see this, they won`t. It`s better to see these ads before you get addicted.

airsoft you`re pathetic, the government cares about the constituents` health because it costs more money and resources to keep sick people alive and able to work than it does to for relatively healthy people

I like it, much better than the American (maybe else where too?) one where a girl tries a cigarette and a claw comes out of her neck and makes her smoke. Yeah, I`ve tried a cigarette and I puked, you aren`t addicted from the first puff.

Have you stopped to consider that, yes, your own health is your own choice, but what about the people around you? The people inhaling your fumes? So yeah, I stand behind any and all taxes on cigarettes, because although I`ll never smoke, I still don`t want to get it into my system.
