Unfortunately, he now faces suspension due, but 400 students rallied behind him. Cool high school kids FTW. Good story.

Gatorade777, just because it happens constently where you live doesn`t mean it`s not a problem. It`s not just reading drama, it`s showing how messed up it is and the problem. It makes people notice. Also, both kids should not get suspended. Just the jerk who tested Mr. Asian. Why get in trouble for self defence?

this isn`t news. Baltimore where I live; this happens about 10 times a day. Who cares about listening to and reading drama. Both kids should be suspended, big deal. Move on.

yeah....schools have no sense of justice...and any kind of saving one`s self from harm is discouraged...i think it is straight bullpoo...grow some balls administrators....and do the RIGHT thing...not the bureaucratic thing....

schools punish retaliation because they are training children to be defenseless little pussies that rely on `authority figures` for everything.

if everyone grew up learning to defend themselves and not running away from everything police and the legal system would lose a lot of their potential business.

just so you know why schools always promote "don`t do anything, never hit back, violence is not the answer, take ridicule, bullying, insults, and don`t do anything" policy.

Schools in general need to reexamine their policies on fighting. My school`s position is that if you fight in any way, shape or form you will be suspended; it doesn`t matter if it`s in self defense. You should just find a teacher.

In the real world, policies like that don`t work. You get beat, in some cases relatively severely, if you don`t defend yourself. Regardless, even if you do find a teacher they`ll assume you fought back if the incident occurred out of their sight.

I think discouraging self-defense is asinine, and to go one step further: immoral. People have an unalienable right to self-defense.

Go Asian kid.

In my school you don`t get punished if you were hit first three times. Although I believe if you retaliate after only being hit once or twice, you do get in trouble and the kid that attacked you and got knocked out gets no punishment.

They always throw the retaliation into trouble but never do poo to the protagonists! All the time in my schools too. If you reacted, you got in trouble, there was NEVER any justice.

Yeah... well in middle school I used to get fights all the time. Some guy would just randomly come up to and start hitting me and I`d normally get in more trouble then the guy who started it.

One time when I was tried of getting in trouble for "fighitng" I tried to walk away while the guy tripped me then picked me up by my neck and started choking me. Then the teacher walks in and sees him doing this and I was kicked out of school for two weeks and he was only kicked out for a week.

But it was because of the guys that would fight be so they could kool were black and they would always say that they got in a fight with me because I said some racist thing to them,
Which is not true, half the time I did not even know who they were.

-.-

are you serious? biased? there`s a friggin reason for the bias. and that BS about little evidence for self defense? man what are you thinking? the bully swung first, that by all means gives the green light for him to kick his ass. the bully is just lucky the kid had discipline or else he was done for.

and yes he was a bully, you don`t use a racial slur on someone and expect to be called a friggin hero for it. that immediately constitutes him as a bully.

The report is hugely biased and the subject header here is so wrong it`s ludicrous. A martial arts master (that`s what "black belt" means) is far from being an underdog in a fight with some untrained brawler.

There`s no reference to any evidence that the other youth was a bully, either. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn`t, we don`t know.

As for the charges...one person apparently uninjured, one person with a broken nose. So the more serious injury results in a charge. Also, trained fighters are usually held to a higher standard, with good reason.

I think it`s far from being as clear-cut as it`s being made out to be. We have hardly any information other than a cry of "OMG RACISM!" to stop people thinking.

I`d say it`s probably reasonable force in defence, but there`s very little information to go on.

Wait hang on, why would the racist kid get a lighter punishment than the Asian kid?

They both fought, and from what it sounds like, the Asian kid fought in self defense.

BS. the white kid swung first. You teach bullies there drating lesson.

"Why racism? Why hurt a person because their skin color? Because of how they were born? That`s like beating up a kid cause he has a small birth mark on his left arm or if he has a certain eye color or hair color. It`s just wrong."

What the drat... Racial Slurs ARE UNACCEPTABLE. If you want to be an ignorant prick, and can`t find a more intelligent way to be in society, you deserve to have your damn nose broken. Far worse things have happened to minorities, and allowing the use of racial slurs ect. to continue is only going to create an atmosphere where violence is acceptable. BULL! Get drated you racist bastards. That`s why the government is constantly bending over backward to try and prove that there isn`t a racism problem in canada. Because these little hicks are still running around.

My biggest problem with this is the Asian kid justifying his actions by saying "he started it," instead of something like "I was in a position of imminent physical harm, and felt that the situation could not be diffused or avoided."

"He started it" is NEVER a valid excuse, right up there with "but everyone else is doing it" or "but Jimmy`s parents let him have one" that is usually met with "If he/everyone/Jimmy jumped off a bridge..."

Also, from playing hockey for about 10 years, I know that the refs will almost always miss a few calls a game, and they might miss a cheap shot or penalty. However, about 90% of the time they catch the retaliation.

Like Morgan Freeman said in an interview about how to stop racism "Stop talking about it, I`m going to stop calling you and "white man" and I expect you to stop calling me a "black man". I know you as Marc Wallice and you know me as Morgan Freeman." The one bully should not have been such a prick so I find it fair that the kid stood up for himself especially with his weak hand. I would pat him on his back just because I`ve had to deal with some similar situations.

So dont be a moron this is a article of hope no student when I was in highschool would do that for me . I felt good just hearing that and showing it just wasnt a student problem it was a teacher problem.

For everyone who`s saying this is bias, did you not read that the white kid pushed and punched the Asian kid before he retaliated? He also called him a racial slur before he started attacking him. Out of the 400 students at that school, there are only 9 Asians and all the rest are White. I`m Black--I know how much racism sucks, I grew up with it but luckily, I never had to physically defend myself from someone else because of it unlike this poor fellow.

Most Canadians here are PISSED the White kid never got charged by police when he started the fight and was also bullying the Asian kid for prolonged periods before waaaay before that. My question is this: what the hell were the teachers and principals doing? The white kid was bullying the asian kid on a regular basis before the fight even started; why did they NOT take the appropriate punitive actions to prevent this from happening in the first place? Moreover, why are they threatening to suspend/expel the victim but not the bully?

it`s kinda sad when people only pay attention to racism when its skin color to skin color. i dealt with drating racism all my high school career, just because i was Irish in an all Italian and black school district. atleast i didnt get a hate crime charge for beatin down guidos all day.. silver lining i guess

yeah it may be that the articles biased towards the Asian kid, but I can definitely relate that he retaliated against a racial slur though.

a verbal abuse may not be enough reason to retaliate, but try surviving every single day of taking it. then try people treating you different, usually less of a person, than any other because of it. every..single...day.. yeah there is a snapping point

now you may say that it was just a comment. but remember he had the balls to say it in public in class. if it was a zero tolerance against racism policy in that school, then the story would just end with "teacher suspend bully for racial slur" not the kid fighting back.

on the other hand it is a very biased article, even to go hypocritical with saying the bully as the "white kid"

and as far as the charges go, if one to be charge, then the other should. as it stand one is facing and one isnt.... how far is that? especially when the provocation wasnt with him..

Wow. Everything in this story just screams injustice and a school lead by inbreds. How does making a fight a police matter help anybody involved?? Including the innocent kid who was defending himself. Makes me mad. Makes me wish I had a license to go over there and torture the idiots who can`t see reason.

And as far as everyone here who is screaming how "biased" this article is against the white kid, did you miss the part of the article that pointed out that this area has a history of this type of behavior.

There... now that I`ve commented, let`s see how long it takes for reb0rn4never (aka King of the Trolls) to pop up and tell me he`s "Master of three Martial Arts forms" in his third pathetic attempt to draw me into a flamewar.

This is also a badly written article. It wouldn`t even qualify as news if it weren`t for the 400 kids that `rallied`. You`d think that if so many were willing to give so much effort against racism, that there wouldn`t be any left.

Yea. Canadian kids are also pretty dumb.

I`m in high school and bullies do start shouting racial slurs but the DON`t start pushing kids after that, the asian kid somehow must`ve retaliated vocally. The story that is written seems very biased against the white kid, I`m pretty sure there was much more to they story than this. No story is straight up black and white (or white and yellow) where one guy is "the good guy" and one guy is "the bad guy". This story sucks! I feel bad for "the bully" now...

@Zazuck, Yeah I figured that... but they insist on naming the kids friends as well as the name of the school? They might as well name the kid with all the information they gave. That kind of null and voids the "protection" part, I would think. Anybody who wanted to know who or where the kids were, would certainly be able to find out.

Because typically when it involves minors they don`t give the name of people that can be used to find the minor. Its for the protection of the minors involved.

But as sad as it is the charges and suspension doesn`t surprise me. Its sad that you can get in trouble for defending yourself now. Even when you show restraint.

Too be fair to the writing, we have youth laws that prevent the publishing of any names of youths involved in crimes. That prevent even the parents name or any one elses from being used that can identify the youth. The picture that was in the paper even had the name photoshopped out on the kids poster.

Sorry, but this is the most poorly written article I`ve seen in awhile. Normally, reporters get the NAMES of the people involved, and if that`s not possible (as the names aren`t released or something... which seems a bit far-fetched since they interviewed friends and family), then don`t consistently refer to them as "the white student" and "The Asian student". Especially when the article is about racism in general.
