This is ridiculous! Just for some nostalgia about First amendment rights, I remind you all of Skokie Illinois. For those of you who don`t know, the Neo-Nazis wanted to march in Skokie, a Jewish town populated by many Holocaust survivors. The Nazis argued their case using poeple on the Board of Civil Rights like my Jewish grandfather as their lawyers. They won, but they never marched in Skokie. So long, I`m off to lecture more people who don`t really care what I say.

Confederate Solders, like my great grandfather, were not fighting for slavery they were fighting for state rights. That being said I hang a Confederate flag outside of my house but it isn`t the Stainless Banner, the flag most people associate with slavery. I hang outside my house the Stars and Bars, which is symbolic of my Confederate heritage and hate for a large federal government while still not offending any of my African American neighbors, whom I value as friends.

well her dress was modeled after the battle flag.. not the actual flag of the confederacy. The actual flag that they used to fly was so close to the northern flag that neither side could tell who was who. So the south changed the flag they flew in battle to whats refered to as the stars and bars. This being said, its her right to wear it, i could care less if she wore a shaka zulu or a frickin ss uniform... her classmates woulda taken care of her and no one would have been the wiser.

"Just like you cannot separate the confederate flag from slavery, you cannot separate the Nazi flag from the holocaust."

slavery is not comparable to genocide.

"If you love your goddamn "heritage" so much, then you can deal with the fact that a lot of people are hostile to your bullpoo slave-holding heritage."

"slave-holding" is a part of almost every nations heritage, including the entire USA.

the confederacy`s agricultural industry happened to be kicking the union`s ass economically. the south was making money so it was powerful and, according to the union, too reliant on european nations. when we outlawed slavery we broke the south`s economy, which has never fully recovered. look at the situation of a lot of southern blacks still today and tell me that the union actually gave a sh*t about them. we crushed their economy and then left them in poverty, whites and blacks.

First thing to remember is. Yes, the First Amendment does allow you to believe and think and say what you want.
The second thing to remember is slavery was only a secondary issue in the Civil War. The issue of slavery didn`t even come up and until the war Well on its way. President Lincoln decided to abolish slavery as a means to damage the Southern economy.
The third thing to remember is the U.S. Constitution and declaration of independence declares that all white men are created equal. This of course excludes minorities and women and the poor.
So, we must ask ourselves is flying the American flag show our support about all the mistakes of America`s past arti or does it support the good ideals from our past.

She made her bed, now she has to lie in it.

I actually think that the dress is kind of pretty on her, even if she does look kind of like a tranny... but she should have known that people were going to raise a fuss about it. Whenever you do something that could potentially have consequences, and you do it of your own free will, you have to take responsibility for it. She looks like a racist now, whether she is or not, whether the flag -really- represents slavery or not, and it`s her own damn fault.

Is this girl white trash? Absolutely. Is the dress stupid? Of course. Is it offensive? It shouldn`t be; the Confederate flag is a huge symbol of love and respect of the southern history and heritage. If you believe that southerners look at the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery, you shouldn`t talk about things you know nothing about.
Who are the real racists` here?
    NAACP/BET/UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND/AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/JET MAGAZINE/BLACK COMMERCIALS/BLACK COMEDIANS/ETC.
There are so many examples of black racism, but no one comments on these. You would be viciously attacked as "being a racist." If you want your race specific entities, so be it; I don`t care. Just don`t be "a racist" when someone else wants it, too. Being proud of our southern heritage is evidently a kiss of death. Come on...this is bullpoo and you know it. You are just too scared to say it.

CME4BMWS I somewhat agree with you on affirmative action. I do believe it`s necessary in the schools for but not in the workplace. If a company hates Indians are I don`t want to work there. If affirmative action since they have to hire me he doesn`t say they have to be nice to me once on there. Talk about a hostile workplace. What do the maker of the Varuna action think is going to happen. Do they honestly believe that forcing us to work together were going to change our perspectives. That my cowboy boss would say after working with me a few months "it seems like Indians aren`t bad after all. Those Utes really are a kind and gentle people. I wish one would marry my daughter" speaking as a minority if someone wants to discriminate against me without knowing me. That`s okay they`re entitled to believe what they wish.

"Just because you didn`t want to pay your tea taxes... :P "

Glugar...the issue with tea occured when the British government *removed* the tax on tea in the American colonies (it was still taxed elsewhere - it was a luxury item). This reduced the cost of tea in America, as no-one had to pay tax on it.

The Boston Tea Party el alia wasn`t caused by people objecting to paying tax.

The people who objected were smugglers who had been undercutting legitimate merchants` prices by evading tax. Without the tax, smuggling ceased to be profitable because merchants lowered their prices.

So the tea issue was about smugglers objecting to people in general paying *lower* prices for tea because it was *not* taxed.

A parallel in the USA today would be people who employed illegal immigrants at very low wages rioting and destroying products from companies that paid legal wages.

You can find much better justification for the revolt than tea.

On the "affirmative action" issue, I make the following assumptions about anyone who supports it:

    i) They are racist, sexist or both.
    ii) They are hypocrites.
    iii) They are cowards.

I do so because they advocate prejudice and discrimination based on sex and their own ideas of race, object to other people doing the same thing and hide what they`re doing behind a euphemism. So they don`t even have the integrity to openly stand behind their own principles.

"The third thing to remember is the U.S. Constitution and declaration of independence declares that all white men are created equal. This of course excludes minorities and women and the poor."

It does no such thing. It very explicitly includes all people regardless of anything. The only possible exclusion is that of age, as the word used implied adulthood when the declaration was written.

It was *implemented* in an exclusionary manner, but it was *written* to include everyone.

For the benefit of foreigners like me, what is the point of that flag? Does it indicate support for seceeding from the union? It obviously indicates support for a very strong distinction based on historical boundaries. It`s flown by itself, *instead* of the USA flag, right?

Maybe someone more familiar with both the USA and UK can answer this question - is it like flying the English, Scottish or Welsh flag in the UK? That can indicate support for seceeding from the union, but doesn`t necessarily do so.

to Angilion: and anyone else who doesn`t understand affirmative action.
The original concept behind it was to allow those who had previously had no opportunities the same opportunities as other white Americans. The vast majority of non-whites in America lived in poverty and had no way of elevating their status. Their schools were less funded and often had inadequate learning materials. In affirmative action law was to ensure everyone had an equal footing. As for people or behind how do you expect them to catch up without giving up more opportunities to do so. Many people still that it`s not fair that minorities often had a lower bar when it comes to college acceptance. It is often because they have lower opportunities in education. I recommend reading Malcolm Gladwell`s latest book to help understand. It is true that nowadays in most cases affirmative action is outdated and not necessary. The normal one thing I`ve learned from growing up poor was that it has no racial barrier

Angilion I hate to say it but you are very ignorant about the history and ways of America.
Let me give you a slight history lesson. The new world was discovered in 1492. United States of America was established in 1776.
In 1880 first Nations people (indigenous American Indians). Were declared to be human beings and were protected by all rights governing humans. Furthermore they were you are no longer to use Indian bodies as clothing or tools.
In 1888 Congress passed a law saying it was illegal to dig up dead Indians and sell their heads.
In 1924 Indians become US citizens.
In 1970 standoff at Wounded Knee.
In 2002 AIM (American Indian movement) is declared a terrorist organization. Due to the deaths in 1970s.
In 2004 Colorado Utes win the right to mine resources found on their reservation land.
This history lesson does not include blacks or Asians who have similar stories. Yes all men are created equal according to the Constitution. But minorities were not

Ok, just so everyone is one the same page.

Nazi symbol = bad, just bad.
Confederate flag = bad, just because of it`s link to a racist past despite any legitimate southern heritage it may imply.

Racism: is not about bad jokes, equal protection under the law, affirmative action or any group that attempts a helping hand legally or financially to a minority person(s).

Racism is about control, pure and simple, not bigotry or being an uneducated person. Making a physical effort to deny another person`s right to a pursue a life full of free choices is the definition of racism, period.

kaizen_man68 very well said you made some very good points.
I would disagree about the flag being bad just because. It is equally possible to say the American flag is "bad, just because of it`s link to a racist past".
Let`s talk about what the American flag can symbolize: Democracy, freedom, capitalism, equality, diversity, hope. On the other hand it can symbolize slavery, discrimination, genocide, terrorism, imperialism, and self-righteousness.
Just because a simple had something bad attached to a doesn`t mean it`s all bad.

madest there`s no need for name-calling. please keep your conversation respectful. Nowhere in any way posts today have I blamed anyone for anything. There`s a lot more to American history than just slavery. I recommend you watch the Ken Burns documentaries "the West"
also if you look at my posts you`ll see that I refer to things that happened a few years ago.

    True.

Should we allow the Japanese imperial flag to fly over Hawaii (allow some people to express their historical views)? I mean many of the inhabitants do have a Japanese ancestry.

That`s my real issue with those in the south that believe they should have the right, ergo the "balls" to display such a symbol.

You lost the war therefore you lose the right to display the flag in any fashion (outside of a government institution that is).

But, ahem, I will always side with the right of freedom of expression. If one wants to be a bigot, then by all means, knock yourself out.

But those that do, just don`t cry an get yourself a lawyer, thinking that you`ve been wronged when offers of financial aid are revoked, because that is their right to do so.

I`m born and raised in Houston, TX so I`ve been around those who have and fly the Confederate flag. I don`t really feel like getting in a hot debate so I`m just gonna say that she should have been able to wear that dress to prom if she wanted to. My friend had a similar problem with a t-shirt that had the rebel flag on it. She wore it to school and they told her she couldn`t wear it. She told her mom about this and her mom yelled at the school and said they couldn`t tell her that she couldn`t wear it. My friend isn`t even from Texas, but she had many friends who are from here so she supported South heritage just like us.

madest why? I`ll tell you why, because if you were a good American like you claim to be. You would believe in the First Amendment and support anyone`s right to have a differing opinion and the right to say said opinion. The purpose of a good debate is to exchange ideas and to come away with a new understanding of an opposing point of view. I apparently said one thing you didn`t like which has led you not to hear anything else I`ve had to say. When I said "all white people are created equal" that was not an exact quote. Something that most people here understood. but the moment you run across something you didn`t like you close your mind.
So will you explain in civil tones where I once claimed victimized. I merely the related the history of the country you claim to love but do not support its ideals. If it makes you feel better to call me names go right ahead. I am comforted in the knowledge of being a better person.

twelfth President of the United States Zachary Taylor. during his youth, he lived on the frontier in Louisville, Kentucky. was a slaveholder. During the Civil War Kentucky was part of the Union and was a slave state until the end of the Civil War when slavery was abolished.
Kentucky may not have been a Confederate state but was proslavery. What does this girl and her dress had to do with that. Maybe her and her family are proslavery or maybe her parents are just from the South. I really don`t know. To bad no one bothered to ask her. All we Know for certain is whoever wrote the article was very intolerant of other points of view.

I think that a few of you misinterpreted my comments, or missed the point completely.
Racism is wrong, period. So is reverse racism. Affirmative action is reverse racism, period. People should be hired and advanced based upon their abilities, NOT THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN. If you feel that you have been judged by that criteria instead of your abilities, then take a legal recourse. No one should be given a free pass to the head of the line, simply because of their race. Now you are losing quality in the name of "fairness." That certainly isn`t good, OR right.
Secondly, you cannot pick and choose only the good parts of history because you personally find the bad parts to be "offensive" or not with your personal beliefs. That isn`t the way it works. Our country and it`s people become stronger by learning from our mistakes. If we become so "sensitive" that we can no longer honestly accept our history, good or bad, then we are destined to repeat it.

Ok, since I can`t comment on the article itself, I`ll just say this here. The Confederate flag does not stand for slavery. Neither did the Confederacy. Slavery was allowed in the Confederacy, that`s it. I`m not saying that was right, I`m just saying that`s as far as it goes. That`s like saying the 1820 American flag stands for slavery because the US allowed it then. Most people in the Confederacy didn`t even own slaves, and (believe it or not) the Civil War was NOT fought based on slavery. Whites in the North hated blacks just as much as whites in the South did. Do you really think they would have risked their lives to free them?

While it was probably in bad taste, she has every right to wear it.

Political correctness has been taken to far already in this country. People cry and whine at the slightest insult to their height, weight, race, religion, geographic area, etc. STFU and get a life. The only reason people are still like this is because the government constantly reinforces our differences by crafting legislation to bring them to light (affirmative action being a primary example).

Political correctness already ruined most of Europe, and now we`re being consumed as well.

And as the next 3 and a half years pass, things will get worse, and Obama and Pelosi will be there to cheer lead.

Wrong. There was a gigantic tariff on exporting cotton to England, and the South was making crazy money off of it. The North thought they should keep things within the country. The South would have lost a lot of money and, like most people when they get a pay cut, got pissed.

To answer your least stupid question first: Yes, of course I have been discriminated against. Mostly by people like you. My country`s law makes discrimination against me legal. It`s seen as being a good thing.

You want to claim victim power based on history? You want to claim victim power based on some arbritrarily defined status as a minority? That`s particularly stupid, as everyone is a minority in a variety of ways. But anyway, check this out:

In my home country, it used to be legal to kill people on sight for being members of the "minority" that I could claim to be part of. Maybe some of my ancestors were killed that way. It`s possible.

So, are you going to stop pretending nothing I say means anything because my ancestors weren`t a minority enough or victimised enough? And are you going to read the declaration of independence of the USA and read my original post, before you make an enough bigger fool of yourself by continuing to make provably false stateme

US came into being in 1776.
1865 the 13th amendment passes abolishing slavery. Giving blacks 1/6 the rights of white men.
1867 anti-slavery was extended to American Indians in California.
In 1870 the 15th amendment allows all minorities to vote with the exception of Indians
In a final end to 1920 women suffrage in all states. The 19th amendment
in 1924 Indians become US citizens and are granted the right to vote.
The civil rights act was ratified many times over the next few decades finally giving everyone in America equal rights by 1967.
1971 the 26th amendment is passed allowing all American citizens the right to vote regardless of race, ethnicity, and religion, and sex, ect...

so much for the 1776 declaration that all men are created equal

Arbritrary in the sense of choosing *which* criteria to use when defining a minority. Everyone is in a minority in a variety of ways, so why are some ways important and others not? That`s what`s arbritrary.

To Angilion: The people flying the Confederate flag usually sympathize with one or more of the following causes:

1- An idealized gentleman class espousing chivalry, honor, and righteousness
2- Dissatisfaction with the federal government for any number of reasons
    3- Slavery
4- A sense of regional or historical pride
    5- YEEEHAAAAWWWWW!

Does that answer your question about what flying the Confederate flag means?

I`m not from the South, but I find the Civil War fascinating.

"You state no facts. You talk about things that you just don`t understand."

Your inability to understand my answers isn`t my problem. I disagree with you. That leads you to think I don`t understand. You are wrong.

"When it comes to the Constitution like most I`m sure you may have read the modern version. A lot of the wording has been changed from the original."

I think that the USA declaration of independence is considered important enough to have been preserved in its original form. It`s only a couple of hundred years old!

"As for us Ute`s we consider ourselves one. The the tribe is the individual."

That might explain why you`re so keen to judge people on their "race". Personally, I call it racism.

"So how about you answer my simple question about your people who are they."

How about you judge me as an individual?

My people are my mother, my sister and my brother...and none of them are me.

HerrHuhn: Thanks for answering the question. Can it also indicate a support for seceeding from the union?

I`m wondering if it`s similar to flying English, Scottish or Welsh flags in the UK. That can indicate support for seceeding from the union, but it can also indicate nothing more than location, tradition or support for a sports team.

Angilion. I know not why he don`t want to speak directly. You need an audience. You`re so caught up in winning the discussion even though he lost before you began. It doesn`t matter what name do you want to call me the point is you`re not an American so you don`t understand. You can read whatever book should like but still he will not know what it means to be an American. I have a friend who`s from Holland. She has lived in the United States for 30 years. She still doesn`t know what it means to be an American. Give it up. That is unless you`re only pretending to be your European.
I understand your points and they are flimsy and have no facts behind them. They are just nothing but blather. Your only argument just call me a racist and you don`t even know what that means in this country. calling me a racist is like all your other arguments filled with nothing. You sir are a waste of words.

DM ur a freakin moron. your like many people that are in minority groups. you blame everyone else for the difficulties that you face. yes their are still people that want to keep you down b/c of ur race but those people are few in america anymore. and those that do still exist rarely have any real power. with all the crap their is to help minorities in America it makes them scream discrimination when something isnt handed to them on a silver platter and whitey kissing their ass. where i am in NY you CANT get a job if ur white half the time because of affirmitive action. alot of people i know (including myself) have been passed over for jobs for someone of a minority member that normally isnt even capable of doing the job for the pure and simple fact that they ARE a minority and the company hasnt met their quota and doesnt wanna get sued by some whiny little baby that doesnt wanna work for what they get. to be continued...

right now where i work we just got to the point where we have to have even things out racially by legal standards and the guy they hired is completely inept! but i would put money on it that he wont be fired unless we get some semi-intelligent person of color to come in.

on the topic of racism CME4BMWS said it best
TBC

he forgot to mention black history month. every feb. we are flooded with crap that most of us already know. and just about every black person u see wants you to kiss their ass b/c its black history month. if white people wanted even a single day to display their pride in their heritage they would be labeled a racist.

and we all know that slavery in america was a bad thing but when it comes to racially motivated atrocities black slavery is at the bottom of the list. it was only the most recent in american history. depending on what you consider as qualifying of course. i would personally place gitmo on the list; and yes of course above slavery. now my statements dont hold true in all parts of america but they cover a wide margin. and dont call me a racist. i have no problem with any racial groups. its the people i meet that i like or hate. i myself deal with as much discrimination as a black person because i am irish/ginger. so i do know what im talking about on both sides...

The Civil War wasn`t so much about slavery as it was about the right of states versus the federal government. The Confederate flag stands for defiance, not anti-semitism. Defiance is the highest form of American patriotism.

Devi3000: that`s a very insightful comment. you must have taxed your intellect to its very limits to come up with such a brilliant response. Not since the days of William Shakespeare has there been such a wordsmith as you.

dragosal: I don`t think he realized how prejudiced your words are. For one you`re judging me and others based on nothing other than the color of their skin. You are the worst kind of racist the kind who doesn`t know you actually are one.
You say you`ve lost opportunities to minorities. Maybe you have and maybe haven`t. It could just be your hostility and blaming others for your own misfortune. Or perhaps you have lost opportunities to them but forget to realize how many opportunities they`ve lost to you.
Yes I will agree there are some minorities out there who feel a sense of entitlement. But then again that is true for most of the youth of America.

racial issues are very sensitive matter for people around the world. It`s quite good that you are able to speak your mind. That`s the great thing about living in America is differing opinions are welcome.

Just wondering... do people still think that the Civil War was fought over slavery? Of course it was a factor, but it certainly wasn`t why the first shots were fired. Economics, people; we were holding their economy hostage!

I hear all this crying about racism, yet nobody batted an eye at the title of this video. How is that not racism?
The "poor minority" routine just continues to fuel anti-semitism. Racism will never be eradicated until the double-standards forced on society are gone.

Ok, yeah the dress is as ugly as a three day dead skunk, but that`s not the real issue here. No mater what the ignorant liberals think, (I`m a democrat, so don`t go there), the confederate flag is no more racist than our own Stars and Stripes. WE had slaves long before the country was founded. Even the father of our country Geo Washington, and his cohorts, Jefferson, Franklin, Addams as well as prety much every land owner. Yeah, it was wrong, and we as a country are better off for ending it. But, it was ALL over the country, not just the south. So, if you wanna call some Alabama redneck a racist for wearing the Stars and Bars, then I sugest you no longer wear, display or even pledge allegience to our US Flag. By your own belief system, you are a racist for doing so. After all, the southern states WERE AND ARE a part of the United States of America. Of course, I don`t believe our great Flag stands for that kind of hatred, and therefore I don`t believe that the southern flag does.

It`s people like that that make the rest of us from Kentucky look bad. Yeah, if people wanna supports their confederate heritage that`s all fine and dandy but when you have a dumbass like this girl supporting the Confederacy when Kentucky wasn`t even apart of it (and yes we are taught that in class) it just makes me sad.
