Ok sure, Verizon operator=douchebag. But what`s to "figure out" about paying the phone bill? It`s $20 fa christ`s sake. What was more important, getting into a pissing contest about 20 bucks or finding the guy? Just pay it and bitch later!

I have Verizon and they blow, hard.

This is only one more reason to say that.

It`s possible the Verizon system wouldn`t allow them to turn his phone on without payment. A regular CR wouldn`t be able to help the cops even if they`d wanted to -- it`s entirely up to the set-up.

Wha- isn`t that illegal? Refusing to cooperate with the police? Or am I being naive?

I don`t think it`s that they couldn`t trace his phone, it`s just that they refused to because he had an unpaid bill. Wow, what total butts.

the only thing surprising about this is that anyone`s surprised by this.

This is the same bunch of retards who work for Verizon`s tech support and think rebooting your computer/rebboting the modem/unpluggin the phone jack and pluugin it back in fixes everything. They wouldnt help the cops (arent they OBLIGATED by law to do this?) track down an unstable man over 20.00? If I were that man`s family, and something would have happened to him I would have SO sued the a$$ off Verizon. Seriously. Verizon sucks. I`m switching to Brighthouse.

And here`s me thinking the refusal might have something to do with his constitutional right to privacy or something; how naive am I??

So... the only people they can keep tabs on are the honest citizens who pay their bills... but if you`re a bill-skipping crook, you can`t be traced?? What Einstein thought that one through?

Wait, just becase you didn`t pay your bill means that they wont track you down?!

Isn`t that all the more reason to track you down?

I personally have AT&T, but I know that there`s no real difference between them and Verizon, or Sprint, or whoever. They`re all greedy bastards. I mean, really, you people honestly think they care about the customers?

...Right.

Thank You SuperSmash. I know what you are saying first hand. Cops are NEVER seen as good guys anymore. They are not in the news when they save a life. Just when they make a HUMAN mistake.

I don`t want to sound like Verizon`s P.R. firm, but I`m sure this was the action of one employee and not representative of Verizon as a whole. Just putting that out there.

This is one of the countless examples where cops do the right thing. Which they do most of the time but nobody cares. People only pay attention when the cops screw up and this only got out there because someone else screwed up.

We love it when other people screw up, don`t we?

Couldn`t that legally be considered "Hampering a police investigation". I`m no lawyer, But verizon better re-think that policy before someone dies.

Let`s face it, Verizon aren`t exactly known for their smarts. I reckon they only hire people who get rejected for McDonalds...

@snapplemouse

you have to be on the person`s account to pay on a cell phone unless it`s in your name......otherwise the phone company won`e accept your money

(during which time the sheriff`s department was trying to figure out how to pay the bill)

...what do you mean figure out how to pay the bill? you pluck out a twenty from your wallet, that`s how and then pluck it from his when you arrest him :P
---
THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one thinking this. Verizon is 70% responsible here, but the remaining 30% is the sheriff`s fault. How had is it to raise twenty dollars? You ask everyone in the building for a buck or two, or you sacrifice your donut money for the week. c`mon now.
