Any place seems unsettling once empty, but some places aren’t happy to be merely unsettling, some places are hellish.

Listen, because this is important advice: If you ever start a sanatorium, you need to tear that s*** down once you’re done with it. Not repurpose it or leave it empty or something; that is just begging – literally begging – for a group of stupid teenagers to sneak inside of it to have illicit sex, where they will inevitably get murdered by the ghosts of madmen. It’s like a Roach Motel for horny morons. You may as well put an “Idiots F*** Here” sign out front and start up a mortuary next door; you’d make a killing.

I`ve passed Centralia many times on the way to my brother`s college, and I`ve always wanted to venture inside to see just how creepy it is. Too bad there are fences blocking the roads with signs that say "Underground coal fire...blah blah" :(

In the comments someone says they would walk that hallway for $20.
They`d have to go back to get it XD.

I am a Psychology major and I don`t believe in ghosts but there is no way, NO WAY you would ever get me in one of those old asylums. NO WAY.

Silent Hill is vaguely based on the idea of Centralia`s fire burning hell.

I was going to say that I must be crazy since despite the sanatorium and the asylum, I still found Centralia to be the most fascinating of all. Apparently I`m not alone, though, so I guess I`m not so crazy. That or everyone is.

Where I grew up, there used to be a sanitorium/resort that was abandoned called "Hot Lake hotel" (in Eastern Oregon near Union).
It was Silent Hill style creepy with a warm lake that spit up vapor and steam. Theres an operating room and more inside... freaky.
Some guy eventually bought and restored the place, so its not as fun anymore, but I have some good memories of Trespassing "back-in-the-day".

Centralia is part of a section of PA called the "coal region". This region was one of the biggest coal mining regions in the country. The fire in Centralia is a mine fire. It will continue to burn for a long long time, but it is in no way raging.

I bet your wondering what happened to the people that lived in centralia.....IT REMAINS A MYSTERY!!!

J/k, the state gave them each poo load of money to tear down their houses and they all live in mansions a few miles from where I live. Really tragic. Matter of fact, drat centralia.

Talking about Silent Hill, I don`t know if someone mentionned it before but Hellingly Asylum reminds me of the hospitals in Silent Hill 1 & 3. I mean, all that`s missing is a zombie nurse...

Frickin creepy.

Te japanese one and the themepark reminds me of spirited away. And the one with fire underneath is actually so frigging scary :/ I actually am going to have nightmares about that place forever. How did the fire not burn out? Is it because theres loads of coal there? Why would people stay there when there are fires beneath them? Who would want to visit with fire underneath them possibly like, going to kill them? :`( Rarr fire is dead scary :(

Enough about centralia. I live right next to centralia and its really not that bad. I sometimes drive up to the cemetary to have a ciggarette, really nice place to chill out. As far as "creepy" goes, barely. There are about 4 highly populated towns nearby and constant traffic going through, which takes away the ghost town feeling. But maybe Im just used to it.

I`ve been to Centralia, it`s not too horribly far from my hometown, and yeah, it`s creepy as hell. The movie/videogame Silent Hill was based on it. Smoke and steam billowing everywhere, graves in cemeteries sunken in, giant cracks running a hundred yards down a buckled highway... I was in photographer`s heaven.

very cool post. Only problem was Centralia, PA. I`ve been there several times and the town was so small it is more like an abandoned neighborhood. There`s several towns in the immediate vicinity that are fully inhabited Still, noxious fused coming out the ground is quite a site. The graveyard is quite creepy.

theres an old abandoned blind school about 70 miles from where i live (in gary south dakota). it partially burned down cause the boiler blew up... ive never been there but ive heard stories from friends and it sounds creepy as poo! id be more worried about falling through the floor or something..but if you go in the basement theres a bunch of tunnels to different areas of the building and thats where all the weird stuff happens cause apparently alot of people died down there!
