But, of course the school is COMPLETELY INSANE!! it made me so unbelievably agitated that the principal can just bare-facedly limit this kids freedom!! i think its fundamentally wrong to be so straight-laced as it will hinder and stunt your growth as a human being, and going to dances form and mold children growing up into well rounded and useful members of society. its also, as a `minor` aside, FUN!! but i begrugingly accept that if the school gives you a contract to sign, and you sign it, that you have to stick by their rules, but if it doesnt explicitly say these are extended to life outside the school then it is both illegal and morally disgusting.

Of course, this is justr another comment on a tiny website which wont get out to anyone that matters, so i dont even know why im bothering...i dunno. but yeah, its the people that follow religion that cause the problem, and abuse the core values of that religion. maddog, if your going to say that the whole of religion is evil, it doesnt make sense!! This statement i think is hardpressed to be proved wrong: SOME parts of christianity teach kindness and compassion. how could this be evil. it may just be a semantical point, but at least modify what you said out of respect for the millions of christians who live in-offensive, non-radical lives, who simply believe in god and the afterlife. going to church on a sunday and believeing in god doesnt make you a sheep, or a zombie, or an idiot, so show a little decorum please. dairy: AWAAAY!

Dancing and rock music? Seriously? I`ve heard country songs that were worse than rock music.

Stop being so tight-a$$ed.
I hate it when people that can be related to me in anyways are so unreasonable. (I consider myself a christian, but do not conform to the stereotype)

Do private schools in America really get that anal retentive? I went to a private, Catholic, all-girls school and comparatively, we were heathens. :P
We had dances, sports days and performed plays/musicals with all-boys schools. Hell, we even spoke frankly & openly about birth control and sex in R.E. With a male teacher.
And to top it all off we used "rock" music in many of our classes. Including in the ever popular Dance class.

It`s a Christian school. So I ask, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE SUPRISED? I`m speaking from experience, they`re Nazis. You can get expelled for doing anything they don`t like, must private schools don`t have to have grounds for expulsion as long as the Board of Directors says it`s okay. If a teacher finds out you smoked pot five years before you started attending there, you can get expelled. And, by the way, parents can sign the forms instead of students, i`s legal. :3

ammit13fma - "and how is what happened if off school groudns and not at a school function grounds for school involvement?"

Well not sure how it works in the states, but here in good old blighty they`d probably be breaking the rule of `bringing the school into dispripute` - which is a rule that lots of schools/workplaces include so that they can hold you to account for things you do whether it`s in their time/grounds or not.

I`m an athiest, I don`t really like organised religion at all - but as long as no one is trying to impose their beliefs on me, I see no reason to try and imposed mine on them either. Which generally works out OK here in the UK as we don`t have as many fundamentalists as you do in the US. Lots of Christians seem to think only other religions like Islam have fundamentalists, whereas I think Christians have more than their own share too...especially in the US it seems.

Thanks Wibble for seeing what so many people fail to see ,but unfortunately as you know you can`t convince a believer of anything `their belief is not based on evidence it`s based on a deep seated need to believe .i think it`s sad that people need to have religion and god in their lives as I`m sure they would feel that the lack of god in my life is sad.Of course there was a time when all people believed in god and the church ruled ,this time was called the dark ages.

I agree the school should not be able to punsih astudent for what happens out side of the school and its afterschool fuinctios but they only mentioned hew had a fgirlfriend and did not say he had engaged in drinking or sex, so what happened?
and how is what happened if off school groudns and not at a school function grounds for school involvement?

Why do people not recognise religion for what is it? Social control of the uneducated. Religion was brought about as a form of social control within communities that were uneducated to instill a form of social value. It is ard to convince someone of the authority of Fred who says you did a bad thing and must be punished. It is much easier to say you will go to `Hell` and be punished by `God` neither of which you can see or argue with.

Gomay: I`d like to see the passages of the Bible where it says slavery is only acceptable as a payment of debt. Could you reference them please?

Because passages such as Exodus 12:44 and Exodus 21:2 talk about "buying" slaves, which suggests trading and purchasing, like you would buy a loaf of bread.

And Leviticus 25:44-47 explicitly states that you can`t use fellow Israelites as slaves. It`s OK to buy slaves from other neighbouring countries though.

So clearly your debt thing is just not true.
Why do you have to lie to defend your religion?

I am a Christ-following ordinary human being. My pastor and I discuss stuff like this 85% of the time we meet. From our conversations I took this; I can enter a bar, get moderately buzzed, dance, and leave being no less a christian.

Jesus had fun, heck we`re speaking of a man who can turn water into wine for the sake up his relative`s party.

All of you christian meat heads can be pricklier than cacti. And for those ignorant non-believers (sorry, but isn`t that what you are...) don`t realize how fun Christianity can be at it`s core.

P.S. LOVE :)

As an example of cutting some things out...

Slavery is ok ONLY if you can`t pay back a debt to someone. THEN you become his slave for a fair amount of time, most being 7 years.

There are many more examples of how repulsive and self contradicting the bible is but this one will suffice...and I`m not even going to start on how many example there are of christianity being a ripp off of other previous religions!

"If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods …do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. - Deut 13:7-12"

`kay, Maddog, agree to disagree.

Just a few closing remarks:

1) Like what don11817 was getting at, Christians are called to love God and love others. The people who go around locking up/killing people who live a lifestyle they disagree are either extremely confused or altogether fake Christians.

2) Straw man, eh? What about all these ad hominem or hasty generalizations going on?

If you actually want to argue further, tell me, and I`ll email you.

Absolutely stunning the amount of ignorance that can come from religion.
-----
Not so much the religion as it is the people that follow the religion. I`m a Christian, but I certainly don`t go around throwing Bibles at people, telling them they`ll go to hell if they don`t believe what it says. But I know Christians that are like this, and I refuse to associate myself with them.
My philosophy is: No matter what religion you are, I`m still going to treat you like a respectable human being. I`ll mind my business and stay out of yours. :)

>> Belive whatever you want, say whatever you want. I support those freedoms. What I do not support is the persecution and infringement of other peoples rights because they dont agree with you. Do I care if some fundie hate`s abortion? Not so much as that is their right and they have the right to voice that opinion.I can present a counter argument to it. Do I think they have the right to remove the legal right for women to have abortions, or protest outside abortion clinics, firebomb said clinics or attack the doctors involved. No they bloody dont!
This is something religion is very much guilty of (not just abortion but many subjects) across the world and through out history.

Please dont bother responding if your just going to misquote me! I dont do strawman arguments!

Not all religious people are annoying, but these little offshoot groups that try to dictate kids` lives really get on my nerves.

Psh. Private schools. If it were a public school, they`d have no right to dictate his actions outside of school in that manner, and even for a private school, the legality is sketchy.

don11817: "Jesus said to follow Him. He didn`t say "follow these rules"."

This is the only part of your post I disagree with. In Matthew 5:18-19 Jesus clearly states that all the laws from the OT still apply, and that anyone who breaks "one of the least of these commands [...] will be called least in heaven". So in fact, Jesus tells you to obey all the original OT laws. I don`t know a single Christian who stones rebellious children to death, so it looks like they`re all going to be called least in heaven.

That said, It dosnt make the acctuall followers evil though. People can think or say what they like for all I care. I never acctually said "Believe what you want to believe, just don`t act on it in any way"..that was 100% you taking my comments out of context!

I then went on to say "You can, for example, say being gay is wrong as many christians or muslims do, for example. I dont like, I dont agree with it and I`ll put foward just as many counter arguments.
Thats debate.
The second the christians or muslims start amending laws, locking up gays, assulting or killing gays then it`s time to start breaking skulls!"

My argument allways was and is, >>

Zombies? wtf, that`s your comeback? Because, I choose to believe that when I die I won`t just lie in the ground and become scum of the Earth...that`s a bad thing? Because I choose to life a good life (by no means perfect) but a life in which I give thanks to something greater than me and try (the key word is try) to be moral and right is bad? No, REAL Christians aren`t anything like that story, but your lack of anykind of faith (be it in God or not) makes you just group all people in one catergory and cast judgement. Athesists always go on like they`re so liberal and accepting compared to Christians when they`re VERY judgemental like everyone else.

Yet another example of Christians giving their own religion a bad name.
"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other,"

In Psalms 30:11, David says to God, "You have turned my mourning into dancing..." So if dancing were bad, then why would God have done that?

This is just another example of the shallow, self righteous, hypocritical, morons who are the backbone of almost all cult religions like Christianity.

There is one thing more important than practicing what you preach. And that is KNOWING what you preach.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn,

a time to dance.

It strikes me that the real reason for not wanting him to attend this party is that he may have a good time and go back and tell all the other `controlled` students that actually dancing, kissing, socialising with people with differing views is pretty good fun.

Rock music encourages rebellion? Hmmmm....against whom are they worried the rebellion will be? Them or their chosen diety? Seems to me it`s themselves and their own control they don`t want people questioning.

Just another transparent example of biggotted people using religion for their own ends.

No. Thats a diffrent arguement all together because it dosnt effect anyone but you! You choose not to act violently and I`d salute that in certain circumstances.

Then again...if your lack of action caused suffering of others then yes I would have problem with it, but as I said..it`s not the same arguement.

Please try and keep the discussion in context. Pacifist arnt likely to set nail bombs off in gay nightclubs are they! they wouldnt be a pacifist if they did! Continued.... I believe Jesus would do the same today in so called "Christian" churches who espouse religion over faith, religious deeds as if they are meritorious or somehow make them more worthy than others. God loves all His children-- you me, every human breathing--the same. We have but to respond to Him. I cannot make myself worthy of his love--He already gave it to me. I cannot be religious and self-righteous and win favor for it. Any person who uses their self-righteous agenda to forward themselves on Earth will not receive any thing more for it--will not benefit or be elevated in some "status" in God`s eyes. The man who believes he can be religious and impress God is a fool...

Religion is a problem. Christ Himself said it was. Religion is man-made, not God-made and I think thats where the line blurs for many people. Jesus said to follow Him. He didn`t say "follow these rules".

A true follower of Jesus is anything BUT religious--religion is not the key to knowing God, being Christ-like is. Jesus hung out with the prostitutes, the sick, the lame, the outcast--he was a doctor to the sick, a healer to the broken and abused, a mentor to those who would follow Him and a Teacher to those who would listen.

Yes modern Christianity is flawed. Centuries of PEOPLE using it to promote their agendas and fulfill their lust for power and wealth has twisted God`s gift of Jesus 180 degrees out from what God intended.

You will recall that Jesus renounced the religious zealots. "if any one of you is without sin, let him cast the first stone" was a challenge to their self-proclaimed righteousness. I believe Jesus would do the same today in &q

I really don`t care what other people do.
Rock Music, hand holding, kissing?
These are all material items that just don`t matter at all. And when this group of "Christians" enforce these types of rules on other people they are doing nothing hurting their image.

Jesus doesn`t want us caught up in these petty arguments of what is right and wrong in this particular day and age.
He told us to do two things simply, love God and love man.
These people are doing nothing of the sort going around with all the "GOD HATES ROCK MUSIC! TURN OR BURN!! YOU`RE ALL GOING TO HELL FOR GOING TO PROM" do NOT have a spirit of love.

I don`t care about Rock music, Holding hands, gay marriage WHATEVER!
All I care about is that my Savior, Jesus, has commanded me to love everyone as I would want to be loved.
That is all I try to do as a follower of him.
What a horrible argument, by that logic we should persecute any group or community based upon the actions of a few loosely related individuals. A corrupt UN official means all of the UN is bad. English male citizens who are a part of pedophile rings means that all English males are disgusting. A scientist who engages in illegal and potentially disastrous research means that all scientists should be scrutinized
Bollocks. The Bible clearly states that we`re all going to burn in Hell and be tormented for all eternity if you`re not Christian. Sorry, Buddhists. F*ck you, Muslims. Hate to beya, Jews. What`s that, Chinese animists? Soz, but you`re all f*cked. Hare Krinshna? Don`t make me laugh! My god is better than your god, you`ll see, when you`re burning in hell.

Thats a VERY bad counter argument you make AnwarNova. Each religion (as a whole) is very diffrent from claiming "A corrupt UN official means all of the UN is bad (or any of your other statements)".
All religions are a set of faiths and practices. Of course each member is diffrent and has a diffrent interpretation of that religion..but one constant is apparent. The same core beliefs! You cant throw every UN official, Englishman or Scientist into the same idioligy because each member dosnt have the same set of core beliefs.

I have as many arguments as you like about religion but they are pointless. Religion IS evil. No ifs or buts. Try reading the bible or Quran. What a horrible argument, by that logic we should persecute any group or community based upon the actions of a few loosely related individuals. A corrupt UN official means all of the UN is bad. English male citizens who are a part of pedophile rings means that all English males are disgusting. A scientist who engages in illegal and potentially disastrous research means that all scientists should be scrutinized and treated with suspicion. You only get to these kind of conclusions with a huge dose of arrogant ignorance.

These headbangers are able to operate because of the sympathetic mouth-breathing bronze-age bullsh*t that supports their hegemony.

I`m going to stop now, before I get into the Pope preaching against condom use in AIDS-stricken africa.

I think what most people are forgetting is that he family knowingly sent their son to this school. Sure the school might be crazy, but the family sent their kid there and now expect the school not act crazy? Hilarious.

je_scream - "Religion really has nothing to do with this"

Perhaps you missed this quote from the principal:
"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other"

Now, how is this not about religion again?

Furthermore, I think that the contract`s more of an agreement - nothing legally binding. I know a couple of schools who passed around an "I Agree To Abide by the School Rules" sheet. No one takes it seriously. I`m also a Christian and attend a Christian school... we don`t have dances, but we`re also not challenged or threatened about our extra-curricular lifestyle. This school is a simply ridiculous example. Trust me, this shouldn`t be reflected on the rest of Christians.

God damn. This has gotten so out of hand. This prom is my highschools prom, and his girlfriend is one of my really good friends. It`s all really stupid. Our prom is actually going on right as I speak, and apparently there are news crews there waiting outside.

They have been dating less than two weeks, yet he still insists on going and getting suspended, and not being able to walk at graduation.

She told me when I walked into school last wednesday that a radio station had called him and asked for an interview with them. She was pissed then haha. I wonder what she`s thinking now. >.>

"Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did....England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance"

So, the principal signs his studid form allowing him to go, and then simulaneously threatens him with supspension if he does? Doesn`t seem like the best way to handle that situation.

Oh and Jinxie, well said. I`m and atheist and pretty much all my friends are Christains of one kind or another. Fundamentalists of any stripe are narrow and bigoted individuals.

skine: I`m proud to say I`m Christian, I am, However, Disappointed this school has gone authoritarian on this kid.

Their rules should only apply to their school grounds, Not to this kids entire life.

This is exactly the kind of tyrannical crap that has caused people to stop going to church and some others to become atheists.

Public schools have similar problems with their "zero tolerance" rules as well.

Like, I`m so tired of these videos that show these country bumpkin idiots just pissing on the word of Christ and everyone making broad generalizations and using it as a basis to thump how proud to be a atheist or something equally RETARDED for people to like pat them on the back or something. I just don`t get the point. Like, obviously this school if f-ing CRAZY and you know that all Christians aren`t like that so what`s with the Christian bashing comments, not cool. And anywho, the boy deserves to not go to graduation because he or his father can`t read, it says that in the contract there`s no prom or anyother normal stuff allowed lol, yet they still decided to go there. Dumb. He made his bed now sleep in it. lol, no rock music, someone send Kevin Bacon to that school ASAP.

I had no idea some people still considered rock music the devil`s tool or whatever. That`s pretty funny.

But it irks me that people will take a case like this and apply it to Christianity as a whole--this is the same tactic people will use when equating extremist Muslim behavior to Islam as a whole. Any religion can be interpreted in any way. These people take it to the extreme. Most Christians don`t. Please remember that, and think twice before calling Christians "stupid".

Oh, and though I (being a Christian) disagree with every mentioned term in the school`s contract, it is still a contract.

Wow. Seeds of rebellion? Last thing we want is to impart a bit of critical thinking and self-questioning into the minds of our youth! God forbid! (pun intended). I love the delicious irony that followers of Christ refer to themselves as his "flock"...

I`d like to see the contract he signed at the beginning of the year. If it forbids him from doing things the school sees as immoral, even outside of school, then I guess he just has to accept it. However I doubt that the contract reaches to outside of school hours. So yeah, it just depends on whether or not the contract extends outside of school hours (which it might, by saying he is representing the school at all times).

How do children learn to become trustworthy if they`re allowed to break a signed contract?

By no means am I saying that it`s right, I`m just saying that as long as the content of the contract is not illegal (sorry for the double negative), he should be held to it upon signing and agreeing to the contract. Yes, the school has unnecessarily strict restrictions. But by the kid and father actively choosing a private school that had those restrictions, they became subject to the school`s rules.

So instead you decide to be a slave to society, and the laws of nature. Either way, your a slave, so pick your poison boy. Stop trying to act like you have control, because when you really step back and look at the world, nobody really has control. Unless your Napoleon. Then again Talleyrand was the one who really had control.

Ok, so become the next world dictator and THEN you can talk about living your life the way you want. Then again you still have to play by rules, so you won`t have freedom. SO STOP TALKING LIKE A TEENAGER AND GROW UP.
sad a teenager had to say that.

It disturbs me to say this because I`m very much an atheist and see this school as nothing more than a cult..
That said, the school has every right to suspend him! His parents choose to put him in that school for a reason, and for the right to go to that school they have to follow a certain lifestyle!
I`m assuming that this is a private school rather than a public one, therefore the parents should shut up! If they dont like the school rules, send him to a public school. It`s not like they didnt have the choice. So..obviously the parents are the root cause of this.
I do feel sorry for the kid because he obviously has no say in the matter as he wont be recognised as a legal adult. Obviously he dosnt like the schools policies because he wouldnt be going to his girlfriends prom.

Not a black and white case I`m afraid...and a prime example of why religion is stupid and parents can be even stupider for forcing their religious ideals on their kids.
