I totally disagree -- I think you could make the same argument with Star Wars against a lot of movies.

You can make the same comparison with Star Wars and the Bible I think, I`m sure I`ve seen a properly constructed argument :)

George Lucas Based Star Wars on an Akira Kurosawa film called The hidden fortress, which is undoubtebly better than both of these films put together.

come on now they`re both space movies about an upcoming space hero. there are going to be similarities. and kirk was a farm boy before luke was. the trek story came out before the wars story. if you go back in time in trek the story happens alot like wars but better.

i like star wars and star trek equally as much...each are good in their own unique way...people who can ONLY like one, but not the other need to get new brains. the one you have is too small...

    Oh noes!

See..the 1st movie should have started like this

    and ended like this!

3 movies of walking! Even the frigging trees walked in that movie (as so well stated in Clerks II)

It`s not really a relevant or fair argument. Both franchises have grown since the 70s (when Sci Fi became more mainstream) and both are guilty of being inspired by other sources...and to be fair, both have inspired as much as they borrowed!

Personally I like them both because they both have elements anyone can enjoy.

Still, I enjoy both, and I don`t care if they have similar elements, because they both have a permanent place in my childhood.

Folks, I think it`s important to remember that the new Star Trek is actually a prequel. Having said that, does anybody remember Jar-Jar from the Star Wars prequels? Star Trek wins. The defense rests.

    Err, actually- No.
The new Trek film depicts an alternate universe (or timeline rather) than the one shown in the series as Vulcan is destroyed and a bunch of people who were dead are alive and those who were alive are dead (IE Kirk`s dad) so it`s not really a prequel per-say..

and as for the video, I dunno- I`ve found that all great epic tales (Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR, and now Star Trek even) follow the same writing scheme.

Ah well, I really don`t give a crap as I enjoy them regardless. Where as LOTR had an epic fantasy tale, Star Trek had black holes, shiny space ships, and imploding planets.

It`s called the Hero`s Journey. Look it up. It`s been employed for, oh, about 1.5 million years now, as a method of story telling.

The CGI for the new Star Trek was done by Industrial Light and Magic. How can it be a ripoff if it`s the same folks doing both films?
