No, he did it right. He took the notch from the side that he wanted it to fall towards, then cut toward the notch from the other side. Sometimes, these things just happen...

Patchouly, Yep. he did it right. Looks like the weight of the tree was already leaning towards the house, so he really didn`t have a chance by himself.

Now, if he had some professionals come in and top the tree off, and cut their way down, I`m sure the outcome would`ve been different.

and on that note, I just want to say... I`m a lumberjack and I`m okay, I sleep all night and I work all day!

Yeah, a pro is certainly the way to go when dealing with a large tree. You are right about that. A pro would have got it down, no problem.

He did it right. You notch out the side you want it to come down on. And the cut the other side.

where me messed up was he did not cut the notch out deep enough. And he should have had a line on the tree anchored to something in the direction he wanted to go.

yeah first of all that is why you have certified arborists cut down your trees. When you cut down a tree you want to use a thing called a wedge. The wedge will tilt the tree. also if you rope the top of the tree and have people pull on the rope while you cut then the tree will fall in the right direction. I know this because I worked for a well distinguished tree service for three years

if you look closely, he actually did cut a wedge into the tree, it was just too small of one. just like kidgixxer said

Guess who slept on the couch that night.

But really, he did cut it (sort of) correctly. You can tell if you look on the left side of the tree he cut a notch, he just didn`t make it big enough.

spider sol, the porch of that house may only go halfway back and then the house could pop out the rest of the way to the back.

but i doubt it. it could still cause major damage to the house the way it tore off the porch.

If the center of mass is not directly over the center of the base of the trunk, it doesn`t matter how you notch it; it`s going to fall toward the center of mass (that is, unless there is a strong enough wind to make that calculation useless). You need a LONG rope (longer than the tree is tall) tied to a truck and pulled tight in the direction you want the tree to fall. It works best if the truck can be ready to drive away and pull the tree down when it starts to go.

That was awesome STUPID. I have personally taken down maples twice the size of that tree two feet from a home. When “ever” that close I use a chain and ‘sling-attach’ it to a point up the base of the trunk so when the fecker falls, it turns toward the direction you want it to go.(Sometimes this may take two chains) Also, the video is short and does not show the full cut process, but when I cut a tree of large portions, I use wedge type cuts on the base where I cut and I also use actual wood wedges to steer the fall where I want it to go. Folks, it is all simple physics…now go back to school and pay fecker attention!

That`s why you hire an insured specialist. If he did that he`d have to pay. Moral of the story: Don`t be a cheapskate when cutting down a large tree in striking distance of your house.

You usually need a permit to do stuff like that and I`m assuming they dot have one otherwise they would of taken precautions. Yo don`t need a specialist, you just either need to cut from the other side or pull it towards another direction with rope or something. Dumb people deserve that to happen to their house and i hope they dont try and file for house insurance
