Oh and it always seems that these disease hit the US so hard, and by seems I mean their media blow it way out of porportion. that seems odd... Disease does not discriminate, and yet the US seems particularily at risk. HMMMM 1o bucks says this will all blow over in a month or two. any takers?

I live in Mexico City... it is kinda crazy here, everything is closed and people don`t want to go out, movie theaters, bars and restaurants are closed, coffee shops like starbucks only have take out the`ve taken away all the tables and chairs. The thing is that this flu is highly contagious and if not properly treated people can develop pneumonia and that`s what kills them. It is a dangerous situation but I think people are overreacting to this, just be careful who you have contact with and that`s it.

We can hope.

On a less awesome note, the first things I thought of when I heard 80 people died:

80... out of 6 billion
how many were elderly, very young, sickly, stupid, had another disease, etc. etc.

When people of a normal/healthy age who take good care of themselves start dying in mass numbers, tell me. Until then, I will enjoy my not-panicking.

Bottom line is that there are many many strains of flu out there. The flu shot is designed to target the ones that trends show will most likely cause an outbreak during the season. Anyone who`s panicking over this should chill out, wash your hands, drink lots of water, and get some exercise. OH and anyone who thinks that the last pandemic even put a dent in most populations outta check who the biggest demographic in the western world are right now. If they died back then, we wouldn`t all be getting ready to pony up the cash to take care of baby boomers now...

Think about it, for Mexico City, the single most densely populated city in the world with nearly 20 million people stuffed into that little plateau and the nearby metropolitan area, hasn`t gone berserk with thousands of cases by now. If it hasn`t severely damaged Mexico City, then the vast majority of the 2 billion people in the western hemisphere are safe, especially mestizos."

Shutup, we all want a zombie apocolypse.

99% of males who watched Shaun of the Dead, or have played left 4 dead desperately want a zombie apocolypse, because it would give us an excuse to shoot things and break stuff.

Virus evolution

Suspended animation & mutations

Damaged intelligence, broken thoughts, wants reality back

Thinks eating brains will give back reality

ZOMBIE
APOCOLYPSE

My mother used to talk about seeing train loads of coffins coming back to the midwest to be buried. Go to an old graveyard (preferably a small town, small one so you`re not walking all day) and see how many died (percentage wise)during the last flu pandemic. There is still no cure for a viral infection. Some things will help, but not much. Mexico city has one of the largest populations in the world - if it breaks out there, millions will die. And the ones who are left, or are still well enough to make the trip, will come to the states.

Nidonemo: No prob. :D I am aware that the worldwide impression might be that.
bumbleBB: Surgical masks have indeed a very limited effect, but it`s a first protection, mechanical mostly. At least it keeps people`s spit out of your mouth. LOL some people really spit when they talk. As you pointed, surgical masks have to be changed often, I`m not sure but I think the really simple ones only work for around 10 hours...Of course, washing hands is the top protection.

To the New Mexico girl... surgical masks won`t help you... they help people on the other side of the mask, so if you`re sick I suppose you could wear one, but if you`re not sick it won`t do poo... and you have to change them often because once they`re damp they don`t work anymore.... WASH HANDS!

I`m not going to freak out until they prove that it`s easily transmitted from human-to-human, and that it has a decent mortality rate or really horrendous symptoms.

Better safe than sorry, though, so I`m going to try to eat less pork and wash my hands more often. That`s pretty much all I can do, and all I want to do until the world has more information.

CBC has reported to isolated groups here in Canada; a couple in BC, and 4 classmate in NS; all of which were isolated and are or have recovered fully. CBC also report couple in the UK, 3to 4 students in France and a family of 4 in Spain that all who recent traveled to Mexico and returned have been diagnosed and treat this type of flu, they are or have recovered fully. For how isolated these instances are, why is W.H.O. `hot under the coller` over this?

I just heard a good point, guys, 20 people in the U.S. have had it, and all have recovered. Think about it, people die from the flu all the time anyways. The media just wants to get us scared and panic, but we just have to stay clean and we will be fine. I`m not panicking yet

I live in Mexico City. People are dying here, indeed. Fortunately, I don`t know anyone that has gotten sick or that has lost a loved one. We are trying to take precautions because this is not a regular flu. Without treatment, you are dead in 72 hours. It`s highly contagious. That is why it is such a big deal.
Are we freaking out? No. Being careful is not being paranoid. Wash hands, clothes, wear a surgical mask...nothing else we can do.
Nidonemo: it`s not that the health system is not "as advanced". As DarPho and Chac pointed out, most people over here don`t go to the doctor when sick. The health secretary confirmed that the people who died got to the hospital too late.
cahalla, thanks for pointing out the spring breakers.

that is a pretty awesome... what do you call those?

anyway, if you people had any idea what viruses are really like, then you`d understand. the problem with them? they can transform and take in genetic material from other viruses. So what if one virus and another virus combine to make a new virus our body`s memory B cells have little recollection of? widespread flu that will just plain out suck. Not really a bad thing, but still a pain for health organizations cause every1`s gona get sick and we`ve got old people left and right dying.

Then again, losing the old people isn`t really that bad, and seeing the next generation is screwed anyway, who cares if a couple of kids die. ok fine i`m wrong, this virus isn`t so bad after all.

This has kinda gotten me scared. I mean, it hasn`t hit where I go to school (Wisconsin), or where my family lives (Virginia). I`m going home in a few weeks; thankfully, I`m not flying. But it really pisses me off when people are sick (especially if they know it) and don`t take any precautions for spreading it... like my mom and brother. My mom coughs without covering her mouth, and my brother washes his hands once a day (not after using the bathroom), and HOPES to get sick so he can miss school, and walks around the house with a fever, infecting anything and everyone. My house is never cleaned/disinfected, and my parents wonder why I`m so OCD/germaphobic. I`d rather stay at school in Wisconsin, far away from the south.

I`ve already seen numerous threads on forums and /b/ on what they should take with them in their survival bag... in which they mainly include guns and provisions to survive for at least 180 days in case of zombie madness... People are drating retarded. Even though preparing can never be a bad thing, IT`S A GODDAMN FLU FOR dratS SAKE. IT WON`T TURN YOU IN A ZOMBIE. STOP PANICKING.
I`m serious though, it`s just a really bad flu. some medicines they developed for the bird flu are highly effective and can be found in almost EVERY hospital because they`re storing it up (in case of a bird flu outbreak). It`s ironic how the precautions we are taking against the bird flu will save us from the swine flu.
Last time I`m saying this: stop panicking, the world won`t end.

I read in the Toronto Star this morning that at this point, swine flu has just as likely a chance to die down within the next few weeks as it does growing into something REALLY worth worrying about.

right now people need to chill, keep a positive attitude, and pray if they`re into that kind of thing...

I`m going to mexico this summer for a month and a half and quite frankly I`m not all that scared.

This does not seem near as bad as they are making it out to be. Just causing a panic as always.

Its all because of Hurricane Katrina. The US Government didnt do enough as far as the victims are concerned (I felt they did fine, they need to get over and quit living in a bowl near the gulf) So now they will over react to everything.

There`s no confirmed cases in Ontario yet, but then again, people really don`t wanna be diagnosed with the swine flu. I bet hundreds are just going "Naw, it`s a regular flu" because they don`t wanna be all confined and whatnot.

Guys--- its just a harser version of the normal flu. You need to seek medical attention immediately and you should be ok.

Dont touch your eyes/nose/mouth without washing your hands with SOAP and water, dont forget about your nails...
You can carry hand sanitizer, but dont go crazy with it.
Keep up to date w/ www.cdc.gov

If you`re really freaked about- wear gloves and a mask.

There`s already zombies walking all over the streets of northern Mexico (yeah, I`m mexican too). Crazy sneezing zombies that won`t cover their mouths!!! Ewwww....

Anyway, it`s not that big a deal in the middle classes. Biggest issue is with the lower classes and it`s not because of crappy healthcare, as long as you have a job and are registered in mexican social security, not a problem.

The issue in mexico is as someone already pointed out that most have the habit of not going to the doctor when sick and simply self medicating. So there, Mexico might not be a first world country but at least give us the benefit of the doubt and call us second world, lol.

I`m from Mexico... well the northern part, we only have 1 case of a person that died of swine flu, this happened because she thought it was regular flu and didn`t go to the doctor until it was too late.

The reason people are dying over here is because we have a culture of not going to the doctor and self-medicate ourselves.

The decease is deadly in Mexico... but also in the U.S, Europe, hell, anywhere if it isn`t treated on time.

So... drink your vitamin C and if you have any flu symptoms, GO TO YOUR DOCTOR! Don`t drink Nyquil or any of that [email protected]#t.

Oystah I totally agree.

Flu-like symptoms? Wash your hands. Cover your mouth when you sneeze. Don`t be touching everything, use a tissue. Easy enough.

It`s probably fatal in Mexico because (brace yourself, potential hot button) they possibly don`t have as advanced medical care as we do. I`m not sure why, but what else is going on in the world that might be sneaking around this "headline"?!

Besides, if you keep sanitary, you`re chances of getting sick are slimmer, also keeping your immune system healthy is a great way too.

So keep calm, stress weakens.

I am not expert but i am assuming that it maybe because of our general raised standard of living. We have cleaner almost everything and the money to go see doctors if we get sick and then have the money for the drugs.

I don`t think it`ll be too much of a problem. The CDC seems to say `wash your hands and don`t play with sketchy pork and you should be fine`... If there were something really to worry about I`m pretty sure they`d put up a few more precautionary measures on their website.

As to residents of Mexico bringing it over the border... I live 35 minutes from the border and there are no cases here. More interesting, the majority of this city is not Hispanic. And yes, there is quite a bit of travel by Americans to Mexico... hell, I plan to in about 6 weeks.

Health scare, not going to cause a pandemic.

It`s like people keep forgetting about things like West Nile, bird flu, and MRSA. And there was already a swine flu scare in the 70s which proved to be minor.

But I`m not saying that there shouldn`t be at least SOME precautions taken; no one wants another 1918. But a panic never helps anyone.
