Obama probably won`t legalize it because it`ll contradict his "greener" policies by legalizing and introducing another industry involving smoke.

yes, legalize. marijuana is anything but dangerous. it might not fix the economy but it sure as hell wont hurt it. if you chose not to smoke weed, by all means, feel free to keep it that way. but you must realize that it is not harmful and people should have the right to decide for themselves whether to smoke it or not.
anyone who thinks there is a reason for weed to be illegal is an idiot.

but hey, thats just my opinion.

Pot should be legalized because it`s users are non-violent offenders? Fine, go ahead and legalize it`s use and posession, but tax the hell out of it and make the harvesting of marijauna require a license. Also, as an intoxicant and a possible carcinogen, marijauna would fall under current laws for alcohol AND tobacco. You`d be able to smoke it in public, but only outdoors and you would need a designated driver to get home.

And while we`re at it, let`s also legalize embezzlement because that is also a non-violent crime.

I think this is ridiculous. Sure, maybe the use of marijuana should be deemed legal for some issues, such as dealing with chemo, or other ailments, but just smoking it for the hell of it is ridiculous. I mean, they might say that it`s a stupid thing to get thrown into jail for. Exactly. Why would you do such a stupid thing? Just don`t do pot. How hard was that? It`s perfectly possible to live life without it.

Personally, i smoke, and i find that it doesnt do much but make me sleepy or happy >.> It doesnt do any real harm to others =/ But look at alcohol for instance...its legal, and does harm to the person AND others. Since when have you heard of a family being broken up over weed? You dont...it happens with things like alcohol, which is still legal anyways -.-`

Legalize it. Tax it. End the deficite. I know, spellings bad. I`ve lived with alcoholics and pot - heads. If I were king, I`d legalize pot and crimilize alcohol. Although, as history shows us, that doesn`t work either. Alcohol is sooooooooooo much worse.

I agree with legalization, but for different reasons than presented in this video. I don`t think it is in most people`s best interest to use marijuana, but if people aren`t given the responsibility to handle a choice like that, how will they ever be able to handle the liberty of a small government intended by our constitution? We can`t have a nation of children that`s always told by some higher figure, "No, you can`t do that. Don`t be naughty." It`s undermining our responsibility and liberty.

I know this is a bit...random. But i also must admit, that as a kid, i get stressed with school and all that, and various things in my life, weed seriously helps me relieve stress. To me, if people smoke in moderation, weed would be just fine, maybe even, in a sense, therapeutic.

Where I`m from pot is legal and although I don`t smoke anymore most of my friends do. and because it is legal you don`t have to sneek around to do it which has caused people to smoke whenever they want ( for example after work for some relaxation). In my experience no smoker I know is bothering anyone with their use of pot. tabacco and alcohol are much worse for you so I really don`t get WHY no other countries have legalized it yet.

    "
I want to legalize all drugs which would probably make drug usage drop , stop stigma from preventing people getting help and provide better regulation plus its their choice but pot for now is fine."

Asia didn`t have drug restrictions when the English first started selling opium to them. Look what it did to them.

    Also, for prohibition of alcohol...
Alcohol is in our society. It has been since the beginning. It has been in other societies too. Alcohol has countless medical and chemical and biomedical purposes, also helps to clean, and can be made quite easily, and can be used for other industries as well. It is engrained into our society. THAT is why prohibiting it is such a stupid idea.

Weed however, has no real benefits other than taxation, and who knows what it can do to people? We used to think anti-oxidants were bad for us, we used to think trans fats were good for us. You really want to take another risk? Weed is not engrained into our society, nor is it

if you dont think marijuana is a part of our society then well... you need to think again. im not going to say that marijuana has any real benefits simply because thats not the issue. the issue is that it doesnt have strong enough harmful side-effects to constitute it being illegal.

basically look at is this way: A. If someone smokes pot will this harm you? B. Would this drug SERIOUSLY cause harm to that person, and their family. C. If we have things like alcohol or cigarettes legal, which cause terrible harm, then why cant we have pot which does at least less harm. Maybe not A LOT less, but it does. D. Think about WHY the others are legal...they give us money, i bet if weed could be taxed as soon as it became legal, the government wouldn`t give a flying f*ck.

I have not sympathy for people how got in trouble for smoking pot right now. You lost your job, your scholarship, your whatever, because you broke the law. Don`t come crying to me. Push for legalization, sure, but don`t cry about your loss over breaking the law. Don`t push for a law change by breaking the law.

BTW, that doesn`t mean that I think pot should remain illegal, or that it should be legalized. Just that if there`s a law, you follow it or pay the consequences. Don`t like the law, lobby to have it changed, but still follow it.

rick, i do agree with that. If i knew that by me smoking pot like i do, it could get me in trouble, i might not do it AS often. People still have to understand that it is against the law, and you WILL get in trouble...you should however push for legalization. Thats fine, just remember that smoking it still is illegal and you can still get in trouble, no matter what your views on it are.

The government might not give a flying f*ck if it were taxed when legal, but the people who really make it appear of not are the huge companies behind, for example, alcohol and cigarettes. They are the one`s that need to do an expensive remodelling of their production plants. Sure, not expensive in contrast to what they make, but if they can simply keep it illegal and keep their industry as it is today, they`ll do that. They have no real incentive for anything else.

to add to what rick said.
There are 2 laws, legal laws and moral laws. The average person suffices to just obey the legal law, but few rise above to defend moral law. If legal law is in contradiction with moral law, then it is the duty to disobey legal law but not moral law. But those who then serve their punishment from legal law show nothing but they highest respect for both legal and moral law.

Therefore if you are smoking and whine about losing your *insert here*, you are showing no respect for either form of the law

AndroidMetro - "If you legalize weed, legalize meth."

Are you kidding me?! I hope to god you aren`t actually putting these two things in the same category.

Have you ever heard of someone out hooking for a joint, or picking away their skin because they think they have bugs crawling in/on it after smoking weed? When was the last time you heard of someone stealing their grandma`s tv or robbing someone on the street for pot?

Its been proven time and time again that drug is not a "gateway drug" Most pot smoker frown upon hard drugs and most hard drug users want nothing to do with pot.

There are far worse "legal" drugs then pot.
How many husbands get drunk everyday and beat their spouses, and how many asholes get behind the wheel and kill someone because they claim "I`m fine I only had a few beers"

I really wish I had more space to rant on but seeing how I don`t I`ll finish with this.

there really is no reason for pot to be illegal when alcohol and cigarrettes are legal. more people die every day from drug related violence than do from the drugs themselves.

you are right. sometimes its not even the actual drug. its more like...the person owes me money for this, or, this person stole this much. I mean some drugs can make you do stupid poo, but once again, sometimes just the drug itself makes people weird...

Moral law is subjective. Your good is different from my good as is your bad. There are few absolutes:

I think the majority of the human population could agree that murder is absolutely bad and that love is absolutely good.

Drug use is much more of a hazy (cough) issue as you can`t draw such generalizations.

    @caboose.

Marijuana has been proven to relieve pain, such as people who are going through chemotherapy. Marijuana is much cheaper to produce and much more affordable than prescribed medication. It costs the average person who is going through chemotherapy $10,000`s a year while medical marijuana can cost as little as 100$ a month. So why would someone want to pay for something that costs more money and also has serious side effects? And also the medicine doctors prescribe to you gets you high anyway.

I am not quite sure as to why everyone things pot can suddenly be legalize. It has been around for a long time and if they couldn`t get pot legalized in the 20`s we sure as hell are not going to get it to pass now. Besides I`m not sure how anyone can believe that the government puts people in prison for possession of marijuana. You need a large amount of pot to be a candidate for jail time or stupid enough to get caught THREE times. So if the whole argument is jail time then obviously when have become so inept to trick a cop let alone not get caught, then basically all we are doing is rewarding the dog for pissing on the carpet.

As for the topic, legalize the stuff already and be done with it. Pot smokers will smoke wheather it`s legal or not. Legalize it, tax it, regulate it, create jobs and make the world a better place.I do however think it`s rediculous when people complain about losing jobs and scholarships because they chose to break the law and smoke it, that`s just being stupid.

I always find it fascinating the addict is always someone else when they discuss these drug laws.
The guy pushing the hardest for criminalization is never anywhere near the actual drug scene.

That`s so strange. It`s like.....it`s like they`re without connection to any firsthand experiences or any real knowledge of viable solutions. About morals. Maybe a....moral panic?

Id consider IAB a mostly pro marijuana site, despite the few trolls who try to stir the hive with their unintelligent and uniformed views. Get educated, then try to state your case. Marijuana legalization is a very easy case to defend. Just need to get people to actually know what it is.

This makes me happy. Pennsylvania is trying to enact the Barry Busch Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana act which would let stamp holders grow (up to 12+ plants), buy, and sell weed. Even the homeless are included (obtaining the stamp at a clinic and w/o a home address. I hope it passes for the sake of revenue.

this is ridiculous that there even needs to be a commercial advocating it, it should have been legalized long ago, It is the miracle PLANT, it is natural and has no prove-able bad side effect (no lung cancer, does not kill brain cells, look it up) it is not addictive and you cant overdose on it. why is it illegal? no-one knows.

These people make me sick. Because they want to get a "high" and smoke it, cannabis suffers. Cannabis is actually an amazing plant. It contains 8 essential amino acids, omega 3 & 6, and is good for the immune system, and because of poo-heads like this, it has to be heavily regulated. One handful is an entire day`s worth of protein for drat`s sake!

"why is it illegal? no-one knows."

In the 1880s there was a depression in the united states while many mexican farmers near texas/new mexico were doing quite well from marijuana plants. Congress didn`t want any more money to be exported from the nation so they decided to make marijuana illegal so they can hurt the mexican farmers

Well, a main reason it`s illegal is a propaganda campiagn in which marijuana was said to cause black guys to rape white women. They did this because Mexicans were getting wealthy growing and selling it along the border.

There`s a whole show on the History Channel.

I always wonder how the government will get so much revenue from taxing it when it`s so easy to grow yourself. Are people that lazy?

I think any sort of mental problems that come up from smoking, are mostly a case by case sort of deal. For the most part, I`d say people handle weed just fine. But there`s definitely smoke to that fire. (no pun intended. seriously.)

There are a few people who start getting f*cked up from it, but they usually realize this and quit. (e.g. me, and some other people I know)

I also know a lot of people try it once, realize they can`t handle it, and say "f*ck this, never again".

Basically... people are mostly pretty keen on whether it`s melting their brain or not.

Regarding mental problems, there`s really nothing you can attribute to weed that you can`t also attribute alcohol. The problems are usually already there to begin with, the drug just intensifies them.

The solution is to outlaw both or legalize both. You can`t have it any other way without being a hypocrite. Unless you legalize weed and outlaw alcohol, but what would be the fun in that?

also with mental problems quitting alcohol will cause hallucinations in some people and even deliriums. And its harder to quit plus you don`t really get much of a hangover with weed (surely thats a good sign its not harming you)

I am probably in a conversation/debate about smoking weed everyday. I am a smoker. I go to work everyday from 6am to 6pm. I am doing well in school and I am doing great with the living situation. Days when I don`t smoke I have the best outlook on everything. I love the fact that I am going through as many problems like an average person would and I don`t fret about it. "whatever happens, happens" I wish it was legal. People that never have smoked ever., should, before opening there mouth and talking poo about it. Yes, There are issues with bigger drugs. I know that if this is legalized another drug will come up with the same issue. like weed had. BUT I believe that smoking herb is one of the best `drugs` out there.. Its proven to help prolong life, its natural, its about the most useful plant out there. I love it and as soon as its legal. I`m buying a farm.

People believe that Marijuana dulls you permanently. This is not true, marijuana users who are dull, smoke it every day, and is therefore always under the influence of THC, which is a relaxing substance.

If you were to drink merely half (in dosage) as much as it takes to get dull from marijuana, you would die of kidney dysfunction.

Prime: I heard a much different story.

I heard that the DuPont Paint company lobbied congress to ban it because the seeds could be used to make cheap effective paint, and would put them out of business. So they had it banned, resulting in DuPont having a better grip on the paint market.

Apparently, even though medical marijuana is legal in some states, it has to be grown illegally and in secret because of the federal ban. Also, they only banned pot in the first place because it would compete with the tobacco companies. Get informed!

Actually, due to Mexican farming, etc, weed was heavily taxed, but still legal.

Then they created the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Anslinger was appointed as the first "Drug Czar" and it was HE who made up a load of propaganda based on absolutely no fact, and a bunch of racist lies, who made marijuana illegal.

In 1937. And they never had to show proof that the drug was as bad as they said it was.

I`d have to disagree with that if only because it makes no sense. Tobacco and weed aren`t competitors. Just because you smoke both of them doesn`t make them the same. Someone addicted to nicotine isn`t gonna be satisfied by smoking marijuana.

Also, as soon as weed is legalized, who do you think`s gonna be the first to start pumping out pre-rolled joints in packs of 20? Phillip Morris perhaps? They already have all the facilities.

I think another reason why weed was made illegal was because the cotton farmers and paper plants feared hemp as a competitor. Hemp is stronger then cotton and can be used for more.

So really there are many reasons why its illegal, but none of them involve it actually being bad for you. Just bad for other businesses with more pull in the government.

I am not quite sure as to why everyone things pot can suddenly be legalize. It has been around for a long time and if they couldn`t get pot legalized in the 20`s we sure as hell are not going to get it to pass now.

That is a horrible argument. There was a time when african americans didn`t think they would ever become citizen`s with equal rights or women would get the right to vote. Anyone here use birth control? Because fifty years ago that was against the law too. It took years, decades, of work and lobbying to achieve these things. Just because it hasn`t been done yet doesn`t mean it will not be done.

The comments are more interesting than the post. And I lol`d at how some think that smoking marijuana has no chance of giving you cancer. Try smoking anything often, and you have a risk of lung cancer. Simple as that. Well, not really, but it isn`t like I-A-B controls the government of the United States (or does it...), so I never have understood why people get so angry at each other over crap like this.

Less than five percent of those who have testicular cancer will have it again in the remaining testis. Fact

    "Weed causes testicular cancer. Fact"

First of all, stating this as a fact is incorrect because this study is based on hypothesis. There is no conclusive evidence to prove it. Dig a little deeper, Sephex.

Second of all, take uncontrolled variables into consideration. If marijuana happens to be grown with, say, pesticides or fungicides or what not, this is definitely going to cause somewhat of a difference. But do they tell us this? No. They don`t. It`s propaganda. They don`t give us all of the information because knowing only half makes us so much easier to control. FACT!

I would never use marijuana for the same reasons I would never use a prozac... I don`t like the thought of messing with the way you`re thinking, even if it`s just calming you down.

Other people, however, don`t have the same beliefs. So if they want to smoke marijuana to make them feel better, as long as it doesn`t hurt me, go for it.

People who smoke it because it`s `cool` would probably stop if it was legalized anyways.

vv "But when people drink alchohol, everyone who they`re around has to deal with a living hell."

Well, to be fair, that`s a bit of a stretch. I`m Irish. We`re the drunkest nation on earth. Hell, out entire culture is, and has always been, centred around fun, song, dance and poetry, all well soaked in a very heady imbibement of alcohol. And we`re apparently the best country on the planet.

Therefore a bit of a strong statement to say that alcohol is the root of all evil, the harbinger of evil, and destroyer of society. We happen to be doing very well...

Point is, let`s stop f*cking scaremongering. Beers = Marijuana. In fact less so, as the MJ doesn`t f*ck up your internal organs.

I probably sound like a pothead. I`m not. I don`t like the stuff. But come the f*ck on guys, it`s 2009. Let`s act like it.

ROFL! I`m not against cannabis, but I think it`s interesting that this is a real commercial made by seemingly well-educated people, but they didn`t talk about how it was illegalized just because the government was trying to get rid of illegal immigrants, or that tobacco and alcohol kill much more people than THC does. The only tactic they used was the same that all the potheads use, which ironically is the what gives the government more reason to keep it illegal: "millions of us are doing it anyway so you might as well legalize it". Just this time wrapped in bells and whistles. I mean, crack addicts could say the same thing as they did.

ecstasy isnt safer then weed, you can easily over heat and die with ecstasy. weed is very safe sure it might be a little dangerous because you inhale it. but its easily safer then both drinking and smoking cigs. you only have to really worry about weed if the person u got it from laced it to be a douche or w/e reason

Wow people are really uneducated about pot.. I think I read that it causes testicular cancer lol!!! there has been a link from pot to infertility, but not cancer. research shows that pot does not cause brain damamage or any of that other crazy hooha. FACT we can regenerate brain cells lost during pot use. FACT people who use weed tend to become more cautious and docile as opposed to the aggressive tendencies of alchol consumers. FACT While pot may impaire your ability to participate in extremely complex activities like flying a plane, it tends to stimulate creativity which helps complete many tasks. FACT after smoking pot consistently everyday, all major brain activity can be restored within 2 months of ceasation of use. FACT there are many Americans in jail because they smoke weed, but none because they subject children to second hand smoke of tobacco. LETS GET FOR REAL FOLKS!

Okay. I`m going to give you a small history lesson that will help you out in the future, because I assume you`re fairly young. Your comment just screams it.

I`m not sure if you`re aware of this, & judging from the statement you made about potheads being junkies, you probably aren`t. Weed is not dangerous to the body or mind. In fact, during the 17th & 18th century in America, refusing to grow it was against the law. What does that mean? Our forefathers grew it, and, undoubtedly enjoyed a few bowls throughout the week. Weed was also (and still is, to an extent)utilized for fabric(incl. American Flag), paper(1st Bible, Declaration of Independence),& a multitude of other products. Hemp was even used to pay taxes.
That`s it for today`s lesson. Here is your homework assignment: The American Drug War. Watch it. I also expect an essay on said film written in 420 words. No more, no less.

So if it were legalised it would always be obtainable in it`s purest safest form. The only real dangers of ecstasy are because of the fact it is illegal.

Well it makes sense. i actually had to do a debate on this. Marijuana could help out in medication for cancer and stuff and if there were laws people could stop wasting lots of money in the back alley because its been legalised and the gov. can actually watch over those who buy it. Meh, forgot all the info. I did this debate like 2 or 3 years ago.

Of course NOT. Hamp is a natural resource. Cotton owners in US had a "scare" campaign against the Hamp long time ago(yes, even regular no-THC hamp)to secure the market. It worked. Cotton sells. Hamp dont. Common people cant enjoy pot but alcohol culture is booming. I never heard of potsmoking rapist or pot fights. Stop the nonsense and legalize it now.

the tax revenue from this would be so large that it would help the economy, nop doubt. you get all those non violent convicts out of prison, and not only will you be freeing tax dollar for stuff that is more important, but you will have thouse dealers making money and getting taxed on it.

What you are arguing there, is that the lift on alcohol prohibition was a good thing, not that the same for marijuana would be. We can apply that to anything, murder, for instance, if we legalised it, there would be no more messy legal cases, or and the murder rate would go down! (no it wouldn`t)... I am NOT comparing Marijuana to murder, at all, but what I am saying, is that we should look at the drug itslf, rather than history.

I don`t even smoke weed... But I do agree and if it was ever taken into vote, I would totally vote yes. But like the ginger girl in the video said, tax it, put an age limit on it... and also, no smoking and driving. I don`t care if you think it makes you a better driver... it doesn`t. DWH (yeah I went there) should not carry the same charge as a DWI, but it being a misdemeanor (and stay a misdemeanor) with a small fine would be ok.

I spent almost 2 hours reading this entire thread (thanks for the wasted half hour of off-topic bickering Trixie, Prime, and Kier).
Anyway, legalization has been a long-time pipe dream for me (pun intended). As a smoker of 20 years, having to give it up for a decent paying job sucked. I even argued the mary-jane vs. alcohol case to my drug rehab class teacher. I continue to argue it today. I had to take the class because I failed a random at the nice paying job ;p. So I put the weed down and instead of relaxing at the end of the day with a nice doob, I crack open a few beers. Now, before that, I had a rockin` body, energy for days....now, beer gut (yuch!), laziness, don`t like drinking but like to have a wind down after a hard day`s work. And I do math for a living (predominantly without a calculator) so I must have plenty of brain cells still well intact.
Sadly, I don`t think it will come to fruition in my lifetime. Legalize it already!!!

I guess I should have clarified and said I was talking about ALL mind-altering substances. No exceptions. That doesn`t make me a prohibitionist, it just means that I think people should have some self-control.

no, there aren`t. this goes hand in hand with the economy. if this were to pass we would have a new multi-billion dollar industry with other countries following along. we would then have a new prime export and a huge chunk of change straight in the government`s pocket. i say in 10 years, weed alone can help fix our deficit.
