yeah is the universe is as infinite as they say then is bound to happen even if the odds are 10000000000000000000000 to one, theres a lots more of those in infinity...

Aliens on the moon. Seriously? Do any of you really believe that? That`s just ridiculous.

But, I do think there are others out there -- it`s basically statistically guaranteed ("There are on the order of 100,000,000,000 (one hundred billion) galaxies in the universe, as far as current telescopes can detect. Some of these galaxies may hold up to 100,000,000,000 stars, but most galaxies probably contain at least 10,000,000,000 stars.") So that`s 1.0 × 10^21 stars, each of which holds the possibility of planets circling around them. So it`s basically guaranteed that others are out there.

I can`t wait until we become universal.
From abduction stories I`ve read in a book about a psychologist from Harvard who hypnotizes so-called abductees.. he has found that aliens wanted peace with us and wanted to help us create a better environment.. apparently we are killing our civilization. We are looking down upon by them. We are lazy, selfish and ignorant.
When the government sees alien ships they shoot them down.. i think that Roswell crash was actually us attacking them... to study them and such. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

"not to mention the chances of evolution to create another being with humanoid features is also zero"

totally untrue, as beings will evolve to match their environments. If they have trees with branches, and predators on the ground, almost certainly a primate like creature would have limbs and gain opposable thumbs and start climbin the poo out of some trees. If theres tall grass and predators lurking through it, of course an animal would evenutally evolve legs and backs that allow them to see over the grass. throw in an abundant source of easy protein and bam that primate like animal will eventually evolve bigger brains. We are the way we are because it worked. Millions of species but one design kicked ass. To sum all that up, I say if there is, was, or ever will be intelligent beings out there, they most likely would look very similar to us. Different, but similar.

I firmly believe there are extraterrestrial beings in other galaxy`s, just not like humans. They may be more advanced or less advanced, but for a creature to have the same trials while going through its evolutionary path is pretty much zero.

There are no little green men running around in flying saucers, there were no aliens at roswell, and nobody on earth has seen a being from another planet. They are just crazy

There is no question if life exists or has existed or will exist somewhere else rather than Earth in the universe. To a man any astrophyicsist will say it`s as much of a mathematical certainty as any normally unlucky gambler could wish for. The issue is can they live the multi-multi generations in transit it would take to visit us? There is no homebase for such an interstellar traveler.
Our rockets go 25,000 MPH.
Traveling at 186,000 MilesPerSecond it mathematically takes many many generations of a life form permanently in transit for an astonishing length of time to even get to us.
It is extremely unlikely that this has occured especially considering the mathematically improbabality that this alien space craft would have chanced upon us as opposed to the basically limitless possibility that they would have consistently steered their craft where there is no life.
There is life elsewhere but the odds of a lifeform moving at 186,000mps and finding us is essentially zero

As to the issue of Aliens, for upteen years I`ve heard that Neil Armstrong, First Man On The Moon, told a TV show that there were aliens on the moon, we were warned off and told to get back down to Earth and stay there, etc. I`ve never been able to find any video or audio to prove this claim, which seems incredible given how shatteringly important it is if true, so I suspect its another of those stories that Ufers pass around from a friend of a friend of a friend. Still, its interesting to note that no-one has been to the moon for almost 40 years now...

Searched "tooth" and "nail" in that article, found nothing.
Actually, I read the entire article, and it says nothing about what we`re talking about. It tells about the Church`s "options" in responding to Luther, but doesn`t give the actual choices made, and certainly doesn`t give anything with which we can speculate motives.

Your take on the article?
COUNCIL OF TOULOUSE - 1229 AD
Canon 14. We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old or New Testament; unless anyone from motive of devotion should wish to have the Psalter or the Breviary for divine offices or the hours of the blessed Virgin; but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books.
Yeah, sure sounds pro-Bible to me Spirithound. I don`t know how this debate about aliens turned religious, but to be fair, most Popes have granted Indulgences for people to read the Bible (that`s like a Special Permission slip). So yes, you could read it, but no, the general population weren`t supposed to except with special permission. On the other hand, its really non-Catholic-approved translations that were banned, not the Bible itself, in practice even if not in theory.

Halo, of course it does, but what does "common" mean? It was referring to the language it was written in, the "common language", the language "of the people".

Maddog, no offense taken, but I know what I know, and the Catholic Church has always been pro-Bible, and has always read it for the people at Mass. Anything that was burned by the Catholic Church was an inaccurate translation. Consider: if your diary was ever to be translated to other languages, wouldn`t you want to make sure (as best you could, considering diaries of the living don`t often get published...;) the translations reflected your intent?

I think the reason the gov`t is covering it up is because ppl would panic. Everybody`s first reaction is gonna be "OH NOES!!!11!!1 we`s gonna get fried by teh aleins1!1!!!!1" Then they`re gonna continue overreacting and fire a few nuclear missiles out there, pissing off the aliens, thereby causing them to reach out and squish us like the maggots we are (which they were going to do anyways, but still, somebody cheated me out of another few days of life)

Furthermore, the Catholic Church calls the Latin version the Vulgate. Know what that means? "of the people". Latin was, at the time, the lingua franca. Anybody who could read could read the Bible. Anybody who couldn`t, just came to Mass, and the priest read Scripture to them EVERY DAY.

life on another planet is certainly plausible, especially when considering that our requirements for life might not be universally true.

Why would the gov cover up, well...my best guess is they aren`t really, they just don`t know exactly what they have. It`d be a bad bad thing thing to declare U.F.O`s alien crafts and than all of a sudden find out they`re actually just some bi-product of nature or the science of another government.

Maddog, the Bible was among the first, if not the first book produced on the printing press.

i dunno where i read it, but the conditions neded to support life are really specific (duh), taking all the factors into account, i.e size, distance from stars, gravity etc scientists reckon theres probly a bout 1000 planets that can support life in the KNOWN universe
--------------------------------------------------

We can only compare known life to what is here on earth which is Carbon based. In theory Silicone based life could exist..hell..half of Hollywood is silicone so go figure!

Anyway, the chances of any life living remotely close enough to make contact that has also advanced as quickly as we did that also managed to spend the time to look for us are...
let`s just say REALLY REALLY low.

so if their IS other life out there, chances are, we`ll never see them and they`ll never see us.

I have to disagree...maybe it would mean that humanity`s idea of who or what god is would change...but how can you completely throw out the idea of God just because there are other life forms out there?? It just doesn`t make any sense....and to be honest.. that is extremely closed minded of you and anyone who thinks this... yes I have considered that there may not in fact be a god. But to completely dismiss it...is just ridiculous. The universe is endless....how the hell did it get here then??? HOW?

I`ve always wondered: If there WERE really aliens in Roswell, why would the government cover it up?
----------------------------------------------------

Fair question with more than 1 answer I suppose! For example..it could be for technological advancement. Assuming there was a crash at Roswell, the Americans certainly wouldnt want to give up the possibilities of technological advancement over the rest of the world.
Alternativly..imagine you are a hard core fundie Christian (not so uncommon 60 years ago) and you find evidince that everything you belived to be true was a lie by finding an old, more advanced race of beings than ours who could prove everything you knew as the truth was a lie. Now imagine the devasation that could have on a whole culture. Culture shock can be devastating and change the course of history..Infact they can even destroy a society. We know that from our own history books...etc etc

Personally, I`m undecided on Roswell, but I`m sure that there`s life on other planets. Just because they`re aliens doesn`t guarantee they`re more advanced than us, though... They could be single-celled or cavemen or something.

I for one don`t doubt there is other life out there, intelligent or not! If we find evidence of other simple (single cell) life in our own solar system, I belive it will change a lot of things. We had the whole "Mars Meteor" thing a fair few years back but unless we acctually observe it (alive or fossilized) on Mars then there will allways be those who doubt!

As mentioned about religion, we are made to be the center of everything. I do not belive this and considering the sheer scale of the universe and all the possibilities out there, I hope we make these discoveries sooner rather than later and all waok together rather than squabling over who has the bigger better fictional icon to belive in!

The religious right could not handle the truth about others our there. It would throw the whole god thing in the garbage where it belongs. We are not long out of the cave. Look around at what is happening on this planet. Look around at the damage we have done, not only to the planet itself but the animals as well. We raise them and then slaughter them to eat. We are nothing more than parasites on this earth. Its clearly evident from our behavior towards one another and anything else that breathes. We are on a course of self destruction, the planet will survive somehow but we won`t. Its just the way it is, unless we get off and go somewhere else to live, and ultimately ruin it. In order for the planet to live on, we need to be gone and let it replenish itself.

Our sheer ignorance stands in the way of recognizing that of course there is life on other planets, probably more advanced.Looking around, would you want to want to have anything to do with us, if you visited? I think not. l

Fair enough, jrm. The only theory out there I can offer up to counter that point is:

They might not have been necessarily foiled though. What if they weren`t trying to harm anything? What if they`re the reason humans are here to begin with? People finding out about that might be enough to turn the world upside down.

This guy is a loon. Extra-terrestrial life would have to start, first, then it would have to be intelligent, not be destroyed, not destroy itself, develop the technology capable of traveling across space to another EXTREMELY REMOTE planet for billions of years. I`d say we`re okay, people. No reason to get all "Mars Attacks!" or anything.

Wouldn`t it be kinda weird if we found another planet with humans on it too?"

It`s because people`s ideas of aliens are based on seeing them on earth as visitors, and civilizations less advanced than humans aren`t exactly likely to be traveling between galaxies.

If you travel far enough, you`ll find plenty of examples of civilizations of all levels; from hunter-gatherers to intergalactic empires.

I`m pretty sure I`ve listened to this guy speak before (if not, there`s another former astronaut who agrees with him). He`s definitely an intelligent person.

I just don`t get how people can dismiss ideas like this so quickly. I mean, as humans, traveling extremely long distances through space is practically *right there*, with the studies of wormholes and whatnot. We`re still quite a ways away from it, but we`re pretty damn close.

With that in mind, let`s say there IS life on another planet somewhere out there which A) the average being`s intelligence is -- let`s say for arguement`s sake -- 10 times smarter than the smartest human alive and B) has been around for thousands of years longer than humans, giving them a head start on developing technologies capable of traveling that far.

I`m not saying any of this is probable or very likely, but to dismiss it and call it retarded is, in fact, very retarded.
