Of course, I don`t use facebook or anything along those lines. I hate those kinds of sites.

I think we should start a petition (In the US anyhow) to make it so companies can`t fire you for your online activities at home. It is ridiculous.

She lied to her employer to get out of work. It`s like telling your boss you have cancer and then he sees you sitting in the stands at a baseball game from the TV in his office. It`s fraud.

If it was just once, then I don`t see how that`s justified.

If she was doing it a bunch of times, then I can see how a warning would be appropriate, but firing, so suddenly, without warning? There must have been other problems with her, or the company is silly.

if she truly had a migraine, any light would have killed her. they were justified. if she was too sick to work around lights, she shouldn`t have been checking facebook, computer or not. if she was feeling better, perhaps she should have went in late.

Well when i have miagranes the tinyest light is the death of me. Even if it is a tiny light from a cell phone, HOWEVER the lights in an office KILL ME. So maybe she got tired of being in bed and wanted to check her facebook. Big deal atleast she wasn`t looking at it from her computer at work.Plus they are treating it as if she did something illegal at the company. I don`t think she should of lost her job. That is really stupid.

Wow, Switzerland is some cold motherdraters. Fire a woman without getting a single warning during the economic crisis because she was home from work for a day.

Ok if it`s true what she said (that she was checking facebook on her cellphone, in bed) then there`s a world of difference between that and sitting in a brightly lit office for 8 hours.

I think it`s ridiculous, especially if she hasn`t been slacking anymore.

She deserved it! I live in switzerland and the newspaper (20 Minuten) reported that she said that she had a migraine headache...

the bitch lied. She got caught. She gets fired. Don`t lie to your boss about being sick. And if you do, don`t get caught.

lagoosie - I have worked for the post office over 20 years, and every word I said is true. AT LEAST in our area. I could prove it to you, if I wanted to lose my job. Go look at some of the postal web sites - the one`s used by the workers, NOT hosted by the po.

First of all, firing her was just a tad bit overboard. Also, her boss was probably ex-KGB or something. Spying on workers on their sick day? Come on, that`s either being a stalker or working for the effing Gulag.

@Dukat:

My dad works for the Post Office as well, and he got injured on the job, and was on workers comp.

NOT ONCE, did he ever get filmed. NOBODY visits the carriers either when they call in. He is a 204B now, and EVERYDAY his carriers call in, and NOBODY visits them, there are waaaay more important things to do than spy on carriers at their home; so I have no idea what you are talking about . . .

I work for the us post office. If you call in sick to work, you may well be visited at home. (Yes, this has happened to me and others I know.) If you are on work comp, you WILL, at some point or another, be filmed. And that film may very well be edited; NOT of course, in your favor.

You know what, you`re perfectly reasonable in asserting that an Iphone screen is capable of producing as much light in 30 minutes as the (in my case) 30 halogen lightbulbs that light my office for the 10 hours a day I`m there.

Oh wait, I`m confusing "Iphone" with "Sun". My bad.

No point arguing that if you accept you boss, just take it as a fail in your life and carry on

if she says she has to lie down in bed in the DARK and then uses her mobile to use facebook which acts like a light source then she deserves to have lost her job

but if han`t said i have to be in the dark then it would have been fine
she was just being stupid with that and the company did the right thing

"While I do think her employer is way out of line on this, I also think she should have had the foresight to NOT ACCEPT FRIEND REQUESTS FROM HER BOSS!!"

Exactly. I`ve had myspace requests from my co-workers and bosses before and rejected them.

I don`t mix work and online networking for exactly those kinds of reasons.

And this is another reason I don`t like facebook. I`m on Myspace; I hide my online status and my actions are therefore anonymous as long as I don`t post any bulletins or change my status message.

Facebook? I`m online and you know who I`m looking at, when I`m doing it. DX

"i actually agree that they should have fired her. not because she `just needed a break` but because she lied. she told them she couldnt be in front of the computer. and yet she was seen in front of the computer."

Exactly. If she`s willing to lie about something as `innocent` as this, how could she be trusted to not lie about something more important?

"accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a mysterious friend request which allows access to personal online activity"

So why is the silly woman accepting `mysterious friend request`.
I think firing her was a bit extreme she should have gotten a slap on the wrist or warning before getting fired.
Even so like somebody has already said..working all day on a computer is very different to faffing on a social networking site as you don`t need to strain your eyes on anything with much importance.

Yea that IS bullpoo, since she could have still been in bed, with a laptop on the power-save setting.

I`d sue if I were her.

lol, she said the company was spying on her... its not like they were hiding in her bushes watching her. she logged onto a public site. im half surprised she didn`t change her status to "ditching work, suckers!"

Should have been sleeping, but I`m drawn to the net when I`m sick too, so it`s hard to say. You can`t really choose a side, I bet both parties are guilty here.

She does not deserve to be fired as she simply used an Iphone. Not a computer. She would have reduced strain and stayed in darker environment that way.

There`s a difference between checking your facebook for 30 mins and working 8 hours at a computer.

When I got an eye infection, I had to stay home cos my eyes hurt and I couldn`t really use the computer (or drive), I still checked my mail for 20 mins though before going back to bed.

Should have just said she wasn`t on and someone had hacked her account... then proceeded to spam everybody.

Well, do not visit facebook if your excuse for not coming to work is that you can`t use a computer.

Perhaps she should have just said she was sick, not that she couldn`t work on a computer. I don`t blame the company one bit.
